in reply to: What broadheads do you like? #39019
At this time I am using the ACE STANDARD 125gr. with 125 gr. steel adapters . They mounted and tuned easily. They come with grinder roughed edges , but easily sharpened with a file , diamond grit , then stopped ,,,,,,,,,,,as they say ”SCARY SHARP”.
I have been reading a lot lately on the TUFFHEAD and ZIPPER GRIZZLY .I like what I’ve read but at this time am not really sure I need a stronger head than the ACE since whitetails are the only BIG game I hunt. I will use my ACE’s on anything in Ohio ,,,,,,,,,,,,,hoping to ventilate a gobbler this spring.
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #35541O.K. I received the 4 feet of LEXAN today .
According to my Pacific powder scale it weighs 35 grains per inch .
Just for fun ,,,a one piece broadhead adapter with a 4 inch internal footing (I’ll be using aluminum shafts),,with a 125 grain broadhead mounted , will be a little shy of 300 grains up front .
I’m not sure how much length is necessary in the FOOTING section . This material is stout and tough , yet allows a slight flexing , in 4 inch length. I think it will absorb a lot of shock and possibly give enough to prevent snapping or bending the shaft .
I realize I may have too high expectations for this project . But , like they say ” ya cain’t kill ’em from the couch”
Next step is to get some coaching from a real machinist so I don’t waste the material . I have the tooling but little experience .
in reply to: Deer sent and Human urin #28295Well, having been downwind of a baby in a wet diaper ,,,,and knowing how rank a rutting buck smells ,,,,I DISAGREE . I have read of hunters who claim they wizz right from the treestand with no ill effects on the hunt. I don’t practice what they preach.
Best approach in my opinion is to LEAVE all human scent OUTSIDE the areas of stands , blinds and so forth.
in reply to: Glove Question #27794I’ve tried a TAB many times and just can’t get comfortable with them . In spite of that I keep it in my possibles bag .
I have one thick glove which I made from scrap leather ,in ’93, patterned from one I bought in 1980.
I have a thin one which has the stalls from my Dad’s old glove sewn to horse hide . I shoot the same with either glove .
I alternate between the two gloves throughout the year .
in reply to: Howdy and a Question #27778My opinion . Go with 50# . It’s plenty for what needs done .Like some one else said ” shootin’ should be a pleasure’. If your straining it ain’t gonna work out .

in reply to: what quivers do you prefer? #27572I like bow mounted . Have used Kwikee Kwivers for many years mainly for the price and available at nearby sporting goods store .
Now have a FRED BEAR CUSTOM . Mounts solid . Arrows do not move and above all it’s QUIET .
Now there are so many to choose from and some are flat out good looking rigs .
in reply to: Another , 'FROM THE COVER' of TBM #27562Typically here in the Ohio Valley most hens have been tended to and are on a nest or preparing to nest by the time our season opens .
Last year we had a lot of above normal temps for a month before season . Made for a strange season to say the least .
TOM TALK was what brought the gobblers in last year for me .
in reply to: Archery is fun again! #25392Congrats on your decision to go Traditional . It is fun for sure .
in reply to: wool or camo? #25172Like many hunters I got into the camo ,especially for turkey hunting. But in all honesty camo is NOT a necessity for success . In 2009 I weaned myself from using it ,,,well ,,,most of the time . I still have a couple shirts and some bibs that I’ll use simply to add a layer for warmth.
For warmer weather I use cotton plaid shirts and solid drab pants . This past fall I made a sweater from an old wool fire blanket . Also a pair of leggings from another wool blanket . The two wool items eliminate the necessity for bulky and heavy coveralls.
I still use a facenet which is camo . I haven’t found a solid colored net to replace the camo at this time .
It is rather amusing to run into a turkey hunter out in the woods and not be wearing camo . I get some realy strange looks .
So far , since going plaid and drab , it hasn’t effected my hunting success. Turkeys ,deer , coyotes , squirrels and those sharp eyed crows have perished without camo on my person .
What brought me to this change is the fact that many years ago the old turkey hunters didn’t have camo and they were very successful . The ability to sit still is better than any camo .
in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #25066I have only read the ‘INSTINCTIVE SHOOTING II’. My Dad bought it for me in ’94 .It has been a huge help over the years . Having read it several times many parts are memorized . I highly recommend it . I would like to own and read the other books by Asbell as well but haven’t got around to getting them ,,,yet.
There is a story with my copy of the book .
I first read Asbell in Bowhunter mag in the early ’80’s . It was a short article on INSTINCTIVE SHOOTING. Things changed over night for me . Off came the sight pins and shooting became a real thrill with each arrow .
I tried my best to encourage Dad to get out the Old Grizzly and get in on the fun , but he was content with the compound .
At that time we were hunting deer a lot , usually every evening . Suddenly Dad is practicing with his recurve . He had never been consistent at all with the recurve , yet , now he was stacking arrows in the straw bale . I just stood back and watched him and soon noticed that his form was totally different than before .I questioned him about the change but he just grunted and continued to shoot .
A month later he gave me the Asbell book for christmas . As soon as I removed the wrapping paper and eyed the cover I burst into laughter knowing full well that Dad had read it before wrapping it up . He also gave a hearty laugh too.
Dad never picked up the c-pound or x-bow again . He took several deer with the recurve , as a good ground hunter . One very impressive running shot on a button buck.
in reply to: Our X-gun friends and bowhunting's public image #24601AT PRESENT , I stand with ausijim ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,he Has the option of looking from the OUTSIDE ,,,,,,,,,,,,WHEREAS WE , FROM THE U.S. tend to be more one sided or NARROW MINDED . iF I’M WRONG , SOMEBODY DELETE ME ,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT TO THOSE DOIN’ THE DELETIN’ ARE YOU SURE THAT YOU ARE RIGHT ?
aIN’T LOOKING FOR A FIGHT OR ARGUEMENT . iT’S JUST PRACTICAL SENSE …
I don’t care one ounce for c-pounds or x-bows . I have used them and despise them . But , if I run into a hunter with one I ain’t gonna try to shame him for his choice of ”HUNTING ARM”,,,,,,,not weapon . Weapons are tools used between men or countries . Folks in pursuit of wildlifedo not use weapons ,,, but , rather , SPORTING ARMS ,,,,be it rimfire , center fire or archery .
Like has been said and clearly implied before ,,,WE AS HUNTERS HAD BETTER STICK TOGETHER AND STAND UP FOR EACH OTHER OR BE WIPED OUT BY THE non-hunting , ignorant .
in reply to: Game points for FOC arrows #23339On the original question ,,,,,,,,,,,matched weight on field point , Hammer (wicked blunt) , Ace Standard with steel adapter . All weigh 250 grains and all fly perfectly.
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #22612Munsterman,
I didn’t take your post as a discouragement.
I was able to locate some LEXAN rods . Will be ordering 4 ft. next week . I have a small lathe to turn the material .
I tried to find the weight of LEXAN per foot but no one had such info .
Found one place that made a 7 gram LEXAN projectile and fired it from some kind of air gun at 23,000 fps into an aluminum block . Impressive to say the least .
At this point the only downside I can find with this idea would be in the event of broadhead damage . Assembly will require some epoxy rather than regular hot melt glue . The LEXAN has a melting temperature of 270 degrees F . To remove a damaged broadhead without damaging the LEXAN insert could be a challenge in itself .
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #20842Thanks Munsterman. I’d heard of delrin but have no experience with it . Guess I’ll have to keep looking for LEXAN .
