Good article. Feathers always amaze me, Especially when I use steam to refresh the feathers after they get compressed in my quiver. Watching them pop back up to full shape is fascinating.

We have to bring out and check the whole deer here in Maine as well. Moose we can bring out in pieces, with proof of sex. Deer and bear have to be whole.

I shot a tomahawk while at the 3 rivers store this summer. I found it had some hand shock, but I am sensitive to that. All really small handled long bows that I have tired had hand shock. I just bought a Horne 3 piece hunter longbow and it has almost no hand shock, and I am shooting it as well as my recurve already.

That is a great day hunting by any standards.

I’m here in Maine with the same issue. I have never found our deer to have true “bedding areas” like you read about. That seems to be more of a midwest thing. deer might bed in the same general area, but around ere with all the woods, they seem to bed wherever they are when they fill up. This time of year there is so much forage still int eh woods, and acorns and apples spread around that the deer don’t move much. Once the cold kills a lot of the green in the woods they will have to move more. Attraction scents (vanilla was mentioned in another post, and I have heard of anise). Commercial attractants wold be an option also. Problem is you need a high enough deer density to have a hope of scent reaching a deer.

Good luck to all, and a safe hunt.

I don’t know about the vanilla, but had someone say they always used anise as a combo cover and attractant and had a lot of success. I don’t have enough deer to have the courage to try, in case it spooks them.

If I see a deer that doesn’t just blow out I’ll have to try that angle wave thing. I also use thistle seeds instead of milkweed. I took time to pull the seeds to keep the thistle from spreading to new locations. Great tips.

I really only have one bow, with two sets of limbs. The bow I bought when I decided to go back to traditional. It is a chekmate, and I am very happy with it. If I was to start looking I think I might try looking on some used bow sites and playing with different bows to see what I liked, reselling them if they were not quite right.

Keep talking to the folks at the shop. Look into the traditional club in your state and look into gatherings. They are a great place to tap into help and people.

There are a lot of good books and videos out there to give some visual instruction on form and different techniques. “The master of the barebow” series packs a lot of information from different people on styles and form. Even youtube has some videos.

Overall just work on the basics of form and enjoy yourself.

I just cut the brim off a baseball cap to shorten it down to about 2″. My bowstring doesn’t it it any more, and there is still enough brim to cut out sunlight.

I started using a modified hip quiver that i rigger to carry on my shoulder with a strap, modeled after the GFA quiver. I found it to get hung on brush and I had to strap it my climber when hiking in and out of the woods. Now I have gone to a small bow quiver. Don’t notice any differnce in bow performance with it on, and I don’t have to worry as I walk in. I also find it easier to stay quite because all my arrow fletching is visible and right along the bow as I slip thorough the brush

I have gone with shooting cock feather in. Doesn’t make much of a difference, but I seem to get slightly better groups this way. Either way in a pinch if I can get the nock on the string I I should be able to hit what I am aiming at.

Chek-mate hunter 2 with 53# limbs and 65# limbs. Shoots like a dream and looks beautiful to boot.
