in reply to: Robertson 'Quik Styk' Hybrid #27958
So you fell for the “take the puppy home to your kids, you can always bring it back…” routine. Good for you. I have fallen for it MANY times 😳 . But if you have to fall for it, at least you picked one heck of a beautiful “puppy” to bring home. That is one sweet looking bow. I have admired the Robertson line-up for quite some time. One day, but first I have to work my Java Men (that’s right, MEN) into the ground. Won’t be soon, but one day. Use it well. And just think of all the money you are saving on return shipping 😉 . Be well.

in reply to: Bow length #27537Arne has a good point. I draw 28.5″. I shoot a 68″ longbow. I am getting a 54″ recurve. Even recurves can be quite different. My old recurve is a 62″. Some designs (JavaMan, or Shrew I think) can get away with a shorter bow. Others need the length to prevent stacking and increase speed. I am no expert, so the best thing I can say is try to get out and shoot as many different bows as you can. Don’t worry too much about length or draw weight (as long as you are legal). Find what you are comfortable with and build on that. Be well.

in reply to: Fred Bears Memories of the Hunt. #25485Prudhoe bay? Now I am not only jealous of your artistic talent (beautiful work, very impressive) but of you being someplace that is on the very top of my bucket list to visit. 😆 Thanks for posting the pictures. Be well.

in reply to: PA deer opinion survey #25480Dave, I’m actually glad you posted it. There is a great deal of information in there. There are some nice correlations one can draw from some of the info that are not the actual point of what is being surveyed. I like how it’s broken down by WMU as well. I hope I get a chance to really sit down with it and give it a read instead of a 2 minute glance. Be well.

Dave, for which one, 2 or 4 legs? (Both if I had my way, and I speak from the point of view of someone who has the same exact issues.) Jim, LMAO. That is just TOO funny. Love it. Thanks for posting. Be well.

Most of the stumps I shoot happen to be right next to the 3D targets I was aiming for 😳 . I usually keep to the ranges to practice, but when I get bored in the woods (about 10 minutes after I get there, thanks to the ADHD) I usually find some dead logs and send some field points their way. Funny thing is, I seem to do better shooting logs than 3D targets. I have about a 5 yard advantage on a dead log over a life-sized foam deer. Maybe it’s mental. When I shoot at a log, I just don’t care. Hit or miss, it’s just fun. On the range, I concentrate on the vitals, try to work on my form, try to get to a point that I would be able to take an animal with the least amount of suffering to said animal. Who knows. Be well.

in reply to: Starting point #23444Last time I checked 3RA they only had glue-on heads up to 190 or 225 grain. I didn’t even think to look at Tuffhead. Thanks for all the info. My first set will be “plain”. Once I get the hang of it all, I’ll do all the cresting, etc and try to make a few as beautiful as some of the folks have posted here. Hope to have some pics of my own. Thanks again for the info. Be well.

in reply to: Starting point #22289Dave,
Couldn’t agree more. The chart is for the most “popular” sizes. The “calculator” lets you put in some numbers of your own but, as you said, there is no substitute to having a “test set” and finding what works for you and your bow in REAL LIFE. I have also found another issue with finding practice glue-on field points in the heavier weights. I don’t want to dull my Tuffheads on broadhead targets (especially since I tend to miss quite a bit 😳 ), but it is very hard to find 300 gr field points. If anyone has suggestions, they would be very much appreciated. Otherwise, I am getting some DF shafts, Thunderbird poly-sealer and I’ll be putting together what I hope will put some meat in the freezer this fall. Only time (and lots of practice) will tell. Be well.

in reply to: Starting point #22145The spine chart (like the one on 3Rivers: http://www.3riversarchery.com/pdf/ArrowCharts.pdf ) are a good place to START. Also, you can try your hand at their Spine Calc: http://www.3riversarchery.com/spinecalculator.asp . You can play wih the numbers and see what you get. (Same thing available other places, this is just the one I happen to use.) I am looking at getting a set of 23/64″ douglas firs (heavier wood) and making myself a set of arrows for September. I already have the 300 gr Tuffheads and [soon] a Helms Deep that pulls 62[ish]# @ 28″. I plan on having a 29″-29.5″ arrow (BOP-TON). According to my best guestimate in using these tools, I will need a 120# spine. That’s about double my bow’s draw, but it is what works on paper. That being said, I may get it and not have any luck, whereas an 80# set will shoot perfectly. Some times real life and paper just don’t go along with one another. And unless you are making pictures of yourself out in the field, you know which one is more important. I would also totally agree with Dave (go figure 😛 ) in getting a test kit. You might throw away a few bucks, but will save a whole bunch in the longrun. Hope this helps. be well.

You’ll have to fight me for first place on that one. 😆 I have absolutely no issue with the fact that I do not hunt until the sun has been up for a long while. 😳 I watched too many horror and nature movies. It’s either got fangs and claws or will infect me and turn me into one of the undead minions. No thank you! If it don’t walk around in daylight, I don’t want it! Can’t wait for my moose trip in September. Wake up at noon, fish until dinner time, try to spot one on the way back in the boat. And you know darn well I’ll be complaining when I get home that I didn’t get anything. 🙄 Be well.

in reply to: New Bow in the house #21160I hope these weren’t supposed to be in any particular order. I would like to be the first to say WHAT A BEAUTY! Mine (a Helms Deep) is being “born” right now, so I hope to have pictures of my own after the “delivery”. Be well.
