Robin,
You are absolutely correct. I meant no disrespect to any hunter, nor was I trying to generalize about hunters based on their choice of arms.
I apologize if anyone took offence at my statements. They were not meant to offend in any way.
Unfortunately, I have a condition called PEBKAC when it comes to putting my thoughts into writing. It is an old IT term that means “Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair”. 🙂
Anyway, the point I was attempting to make is similar to the arguments made against compounds, especially in the earlier issues of TBM. By lowering the standard (letting a bow hunter have an indefinite draw time and magnified sights) I feel we are inviting the type of hunters that would give hunters in general a worse image. Yes, I concede that the move would also attract good, ethical and legal hunters like those who are maybe too young to pull back a bow that could be used to hunt, the handicapped, or simply those who prefer a crossbow. Again, I was just carrying the compound argument over to crossbows and providing an alternative for wildlife management.
Also, the term “slob” hunter is carried over from examples used in the Hunter and Trapper education Program. I am an instructor and use the term in examples to bring attention to those whose unethical and illegal actions make them appear to be a “slob” in the eyes of the public, thereby casting the same shadow on hunting in general. A hunter’s choice of weapon does not make him or her a slob. Again, I apologize if it was taken that way.
I think the original post is what got me thinking along these lines. It seems that crossbows are being pushed by large hunting outlets. Why? Well, I would offer that one reason is that it makes hunting “easier”. In my state, an argument for crossbows has been that they have the same range as a compound. But couple that with a magnified scope and put it in the hands of a “questionable” hunter and who here doubts that 100 yard shots will be attempted, and possibly even televised on Hunting TV?
Lastly, all ethical and legal hunters need to band together. This goes for rifle, black powder, crossbow, compound, traditional, primitive, and any other ethical and legal means to take game. There are enemies at the gate and if we are divided, we have little chances of winning.
Again, my apologies for any offence taken. It was not my intent.

wolfkill220,
Here in Pennsylvania it used to be the same. But then a few years ago, to answer the growing deer population and lack of hunter interest, crossbows were allowed for any archery season. The following year, magnifying scopes were allowed, as before they weren’t.
I like that hunters are being looked upon as a source of conservation and wildlife management, but…
What kind of hunters (representatives of hunting / archery) are we attracting? I have no problem with a disabled hunter using an aid (crossbow, etc) to continue hunting. But when these aids are given to anyone, I feel it will attract the “wrong” type of person and ultimately hurt us (and the game) more than it will help.
I think crossbows will start to attract the lazy/slob hunter who is out for the kill and not the hunt. These are the people who do not want to invest the time to be proficient in their chosen endeavor, but will take the easy way out (imagine these same people when it comes to a tough blood trail, will the game be recovered?). These same “hunters” will, in turn, be used by the “antis” as representatives of us all.
So who really wins? Well, not the HUNTERS (meaning not the slobs and not the killers) and definitely not the game. There are other things that can be done to control game. Increasing limits, extending seasons, allowing hunting on Sunday (in the case of my state). Not to put our military in any light whatsoever, but I feel it is a perfect example. When there is a need, the standards get lowered and we get a fighting force that is not up to standards. I personally see it “one weekend a month and two weeks a year”. Same for hunting. Game population is exploding, so let’s lower the standard and let anyone do anything. Short term solution? Maybe. Long term detriment? Definitely.
Just my opinion.

in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #17845I couldn’t agree more. I would like to hunt the country, but Elk is my ultimate trip. I would like to give it a try and I’m not getting any younger. I actually would like to hear a bugle on something other than the TV. Everything else is gravy. I wouldn’t mind the meat, but I am not expecting much. Bull or cow never mattered much. I wouldn’t pass on a bull, but I definitely wouldn’t pass 10 nice-sized cows hoping for some horns. So that is where I am at now. No telling what will happen, but I totally agree that for many “tomorrow never comes”. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #17116Definitely food for thought. Will have to consider many things. Looking at back packs. Still trying to decide on volume. Looking at tents. Counting my MREs. All the fun stuff. Starting to think it’s much harder than I origianlly planned. Can’t wait for the timber frame home in Alaska. 😀 Any suggestions on where to hop off the train? I like the prospect of looking for a small local spring in the woods and setting up on it, maybe even camping near it. Close satelite images might help here. Chances are, I’ll go nuts just planning, but if I don’t, as long as I bring enough TP, I should be OK. I was hoping not to have to “Make Friends”. That’s a last resort. 😆

in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #16948True, but…
If I am not looking to drive, that opens quite a bit up for me. My dream (after I win the lottery and become president…) is to hunt my own back yard in Alaska. Until then, I just want to visit these places I have been reading so much about, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, etc. I originally posted that Colorado was my choice because tags are available over the counter and I could drive there, but now I am wondering. As I started getting replies and thinking about it even more seriously I am paying attention to things a bit more, i.e. how winded I get walking a half mile to put up my stand, how a 2 hour drive takes more of a toll on me than it used to, etc. So I have to think practicality and not just “I’m gonna go out an do it”. Lots to think about, but lots of great advice. Hope it keeps coming.

in reply to: Looking for a Take-Down Longbow/Hybrid… #16752Well, after many emails and much thought (and permission from the Mrs.), I have a Black Feather TD on order. Mr. Patton actually had one made up that matched what I was looking for. 62”, 50# @ 28”. Now I start the waiting game. If anyone has advice on shooting a hybrid, choosing arrows (I am looking at aluminum, but I am not excluding carbon or wood) or anything else that will help. I actually draw a bit longer than 28” so the bow should be 53#-55# at mu draw weight. I can’t wait for it to come in the mail. Lastly, I have a strap-on quiver (Kwik-E???). Will this work on my new bow?
Thanks all for all of your suggestions and advice.

in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #16716Now that sounds like something I would love to try. Planes, trains and automobiles. Love it. I have to look that up online, see if there is any info. I also have to find a place in Durango to get my license. Otherwise, I will try to plan for San Juan. Still not sure about the meat. I might have to look at Bing for some processors in the area. Anyway, thatnks for the heads up. Getting more and more excited each day.

in reply to: Is camo necessary? #16709LOL!!!
😆
in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #15787That might be a good idea. Gotta see if I can find one around Durango. 😀 I belong to an archery club, but it is mostly compound. I am going to join PA TradBow. Might make some contacts/friends/nemtors. Thanks for the reply.

in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #15639Mark,
I absolutely agree. Problem with the wife is that she has no passion for the outdoors. Kids seem to be following suit, though it’s still to early to tell about the 4 year-old. Since I did not grow up hunting, I do not have many friends that hunt. It’s something I have wanted to do all my life, but never had anyone to go with or ask advice of (years before the internet).
Another thing I was wondering of all the people who have traveled to hunt in Alaska, or somewhere far away, by plane is how do you get the meat (and/or trophy) back home? How much does it cost? Are there special shipping companies that handle this?
Thank you all again for the help.

in reply to: Kudos to Don Thomas for reverse crowdsourcing #15000I was actually afraid to admit I subscribe to F&S. I am glad there are others in the TBM forums like me. 😀 Actually, unlike Playboy, I ONLY look at the pictures. Truthfully, I don’t even do that. I usually flip to the last page, which is the only reason I subscribed to F&S to begin with (we need to get Bill Heavey on board, he is a great writter and has a strong ethic towards all things outdoors). F&S is actually one of the things that got me started with traditional archery. When I used to read a small paragraph tucked amongst the ads in F&S talking about how “any deer is a trophy…”, meanwhile the cover is a 6X6 elk rack PhotoShopped on a whitetail body and every article has some guy with a strangle hold on some B&C or P&Y record, I just couldn’t believe how what they were saying and what they were preaching were two different things. The first issue of TBM I read (with Ishi on the cover) was incredible. First, I don’t think I saw a set of antlers in that whole issue, second, what was being preached was also being practiced through the type of advertisers the magazine had. I mean is a hunting magazine really the place for a full-page ED ad EVERY issue? No wonder these people need all those gadgets. Over-compensating! 😆 Anyway, jokes aside, I did catch the article in F&S as I was glancing through the pictures and thought is was a really refreshing change from some of the things that magazine usually has.
As far as Uncle Ted, I was walking past the magazine stand at the local market and saw his mug gracing the COVER of some hunting magazine. I was in a rush, otherwise I would have liked to read the article. Can never get enough idiocracy.

in reply to: Hunting Help!?!?!?!? #14982Well, I have another dilemma. I am looking at the SW corner of CO for next year’s camping trip, AKA taking the bow for a walk. Problem is, with my luck, I may actually get a shot at something, or even actually get something. So there-in lies the dilemma. I am not as young as I used to be (like any of us are). I can spend the next year getting in shape, compiling equipment, saving money, etc. My wife is surprisingly for the idea. I guess the prospect of me being eaten by a bear or lion or coyote doesn’t phase her as it does me. 😆 Problem is, I wouldn’t mind that as much as I would winding up in a ditch. I tend to drive much longer that I should, and on a 7-day trip, I cannot see spending 4-5 of those days on the road. So I either try to drive it in as little time as I can, or I fly out. Monetarily, they are about equal. Advantage of driving is that I have my own vehicle and (again, knowing my luck) a way to bring back meat. Advantage of flying is it saves me a 29 hour road trip (again, not as young as I used to be) and gives me more time out in the field. So, any thoughts? Thanks again for all the input.

in reply to: Looking for a Take-Down Longbow/Hybrid… #13488Bill,
Thanks for the info. I am seriously considering the Black Feather. I have contacted them for more info. I am keeping my options open, but the prospect of a new T/D hybrid for only a little more than a used one is very appealing. Thanks again for the info.

in reply to: Looking for a Take-Down Longbow/Hybrid… #12390Thank you all for the replies. I have seen many nice bows, both new and used. I saw a Firefly Longbow that seems to fit my needs. Has anyone heard of this manufacturer or have any input? Thanks again for the help.
