in reply to: Pineywoods longbow doe #14380
Not to get off topic, but Wexbow, how is bowhunting out your way? Other than TBM, I have heard very little about archery overseas (with the exception of Africa of course), especially traditional archery. If I’m not mistaken, Germany does not allow archery hunting at all. Anyway, do you make it out of the country to hunt? If so, how does it compare?
Be well,
Alex

in reply to: The Howatt Takes Another! #14348Do those broadheads come in a caliber other than .50 cal? 😆 Good job. Congrats!

in reply to: Split Fingers to 3 Under Converts #10669I have shot my bow both ways without any change. I have stuck to the 3-under as it just feels a bit better, but I am curious as well. Maybe I need to make an adjustment.

in reply to: Custom arrows #9435I only had experience with one person (he was suggested by someone on this forum). His name is Guy. He did a great job on the arrows I bought. His web site is http://www.greenmanarchery.com. I have not used anyone else, so I really have nothing to compare to, but the arrows were what I ordered at a good price (compared to shopping around online at some bigger places) and shoot pretty well. You probably have more experience, so check out his site. Only thing is, he is in the process of moving, so he isn’t taking any new orders at the moment. Hope it helps.
Here are the arrows I had made:

in reply to: Retrieving on private land #8302Ditto on the game warden. Steve, you make a good point, but I have to poke the skunk here and say I have access to a small farm to hunt. With a bow (or even a rifle), the slightest bit off and that deer could run far, so it’s either hunt public land (not an option for me here, but that’s a different story) or make the best shot I can here and try to plan for all possibilities. I am not sure about AL laws, but here in PA, the game warden has the authority to take the deer off the property. They usually hate for it to come to that and try to reason with land owners, but some just hate hunters.

Picture would help. I am assuming then that the weight is not 64. Like George said, it may have no meaning to anyone but the bowyer.
in reply to: Unit 76 Colorado Elk Hunt #59639WOW!!! That was AWESOME! Looks like a great trip and a beautiful bull. Congratulations. The slide show is amazing. Real shame about the skull, but there’s always next year. Maybe it will still be there and you might just get another tag. Great Job.

in reply to: I just can't cut it #59305I have to ditto pretty much everything from handirifle on the topic of laying down the bow. There are compounds, crossbows, black-powder, iron sights, etc. Even the type of game can be taken into account. I have heard of people getting goats at over 1000 yards. Yes, they had a scope, yes the rifle was capable, but please believe that they spent years getting to the point where they could make a shot like that. Even so, there is no shame in being an ethical hunter, no matter what your choice of “tool”. Traditional archery is a choice I made. I tried the others, but now feel I am where I belong. I do not kid myself that I will be able to draw enough weight to ethically hunt big game forever. But I have options when that day comes. Yet as long as I draw breath, quitting is not one of those options. Even if I only carry a bent stick into the woods and simply help my children, grandchildren, or anyone, that is what I will do.
As for ADD, I have to hand it to you handirifle, I know where you’re coming from. I think my record in a tree stand is about 40 minutes. I am trying ground blinds now just because there is more room to wiggle. I still love being out there though.
ssumner1, looking at your avatar, you have many bows ahead of you. No need to start big and strong. Ease your way into it. Don’t start throwing $ around. This forum is a wealth of information. I got some advice on a custom bow here and I have not regretted it for one second even though it cost more than any compound I have ever had. But it will be around for many years, and even when I upgrade, it will become a back-up or go to my children if they want. This is the quality of what people here can advise you on. You really aren’t in a “machine-stamped” field here, so just take your time and enjoy every minute. I started very late, so I am playing catch-up. But you still have many happy years ahead. Be well and stay safe.

in reply to: @ George D. Stout #59198Even with the 2 week head start here in 5C, I still have not even gotten out. I may just wait until the state-wide archery season opens, even though I am in the Army that weekend. I will probably take off a few days that week. Good luck to all. Be safe. Keep the updates coming. They are real motivators.

Just a guesss here, but if 64 is the draw weight, 152 may be bow length in centimeters (152cm = +/-60″ [59.8]). So, it may not be a serial number. If it is cm, then possibly a foreign bow. Don’t think Bear and the like use metric (though I think we all should 😆 ). Hope it helps.

in reply to: hog hunting #57457Broadhead, I know what you mean, but sometimes it’s a bit more difficult. I started very late in hunting. One of my biggest fears was that I would breaks some sort of law without honestly knowing it (trespassing was a big one). Since then, I have found who you can and can’t put much faith in. So far as these forums, I have met nothing but the nicest people. That being said, I just don’t feel right asking people like that to share their spots. If hogs are so bad that people are more than willing, great. I wouldn’t mind the drive down from PA. If you have some advice to give a Yankee, I’m all ears. And if any Pennsylvanians want to plan a trip for some hogs, maybe a bunch on this forum could take a long weekend and go put that advice to some good use.
Take care all,
Alex
