in reply to: EHD/ Blue Tongue strikes SD!! #32845
It’s unfortunate. Here in PA we have just had the first reported case of CWD.
Unfortunately, many non-hunters are not aware or educated on what it is or what causes it. Overpopulation is definitely on the list. Also, the article who’s link I posted makes it sound a bit like a “zombie outbreak”. I do not believe this can be transfered to humans (please correct me if I am wrong), but it could decimate our deer population. IMHO – if more people actually knew how hunting could control the spread of disease, they would be much more hunter-friendly if for no other reason than to benefit the animals.

in reply to: The anser to all our problems! #30071LOL!!! Great post, everyone. I see your points, and agree. I just have to laugh sometimes about going traditional while I type away away on my kindle which is hooked wirelessly to this magic thing we call the Internet and talking to people from around the country/world instantly. I guess we can all be slaves to modernization at some point or another. Anyway, great posts. Be well.

in reply to: Scent proof? #29568Dave,
I am thinking the shoes were only part of the problem. The scent killer has a scent of its own, so the bloodhound could have just followed that. We may not be able to smell it, but… I would be interested to see how that electric gizmo from the other post fares. Be well.

2 words for you George: PET ROCK! 😆 😆 😆
And I won’t even mention the panic when “War of the Worlds” was read on the radio. 😆 😆 😆
I think we’re all the same as we were, we just have more options.
Be well.

in reply to: Base Layers #29459coldpack: I am not about to argue with the wool suggestions, but I do want to offer an alternative. In my view, polypros (polypropylene) is an excellent base layer. I was issued mine in army basic and I am still using them (sometimes even for the army 😆 ). Check out http://www.adsinc.com. They make quite a bit of cold weather stuff for the military. You could also check out some military surplus stores or some online auctions. Hope this helps. Be well.

Been pretty quiet here too. I assure you that the deer of northeast PA are safe, at least the ones I have seen. Had a doe come to within 20 yards. Offered no shot, then saw or smelled me, stomped her foot, barked and ran off. Saw a few that morning, but too dark to shoot. Then I almost hit 20 of them on the way home. Think I’ll trade my bow in for a Model-T so I can stay traditional 😆 . Good luck out there. Be well.

in reply to: Archery Show… #27720Jmsmithy: In “Hunting the Hard Way”, Howard Hill talks about taking an Elk at 185 yards. I am sure you know the name and I don’t need to tell you that the man never had a set of training wheels on anything he ever shot. That being said, my only point to Dave was that there are still plenty of ethical hunters that use compounds, x-bows, rifle, muzzle-loader, handgun, etc. And, the ones who use strings (regardless what they are wound around) instead of powder are much closer to us than the rifle hunters. Still, I cannot argue with Dave (much 😆 ). Problem these days (one of many) is that someone goes to the local mega-store, gets the latest gear, spends 5 minutes at the range (if that since most stores will sight your new “bow” for you), gets hyped up on shows showing 75 yard shots (taken in high-fence preserves and we never see the misses) and then sets loose in the woods. They feel they can buy their way into being H.H. Thing is, Mr. Hill did it “the hard way” and that is something many don’t understand. The man did not start off making 185 yard shots, nor would he have taken the shot if he did not feel sure it was possible. Howard Hill and Byron Ferguson are some of the people I look up to in archery. Either one could take game at many distances, in many situations. I cannot. But it gives me something to work towards. No, I am not working my way up to shooting 185 yards (I doubt I could pull back a true HH bow), but I am working towards being good enough to not have to doubt my abilities. I owe my quarry at least that much. Right not my limit is 10 yards. Needless to say there is no venison in the freezer, but every outing has been a success. I look forward to each one. Be well.

in reply to: AZ e-z fletch #26428Just to be clear, I have never used one, so I cannot say from personal experience. Sounds like some people love them. But as far as size, I can put all my arrow making supplies (except the shafts) into a large cargo pocket, jig included.
I would still suggest the tape over the glue. Even the thick stuff takes a few minutes to set. Tape is good to go as soon as it touches the arrow. Just run a finger down the feather to secure and a drop of glue on front and back. (No, I do not sell tape.) Again, hope it helps. BTW, try to do a search on YouTube and see if there are any videos related to EZ-Fletch.

in reply to: AZ e-z fletch #26364I just made my first set of arrows. I used aluminum with 5.5″ banana fletchings. I used a standard fletching jig. I looked up some videos on YouTube and went to it. I had glue and tape. First arrow was glue. It worked. Not great, but it worked. Second one on, it was tape. WORKED GREAT! Still need a few dabs of glue on the front and back, but no waiting for drying time. Shot the arrows off stumps, dirt, rock, etc. Fletchings didn’t move (I still have not shot my “first”).
Point I am trying to make is that a regular Jig in not that difficult. Believe me, if I can do it with only YouTube, anyone can. I would suggest the tape no matter what you use, but I have to agree with the above, unless you are using vanes, I have not heard anything that great about the EZ-Fletch. Also, if you want to go RW to LW to straingh, you can purchase another holder for a jig. I believe you would need a whole new EZ-Fletch for that. But don’t quote me there. Hope this helps.

in reply to: Thanks Don Thomas #26286Roger,
Your point is well taken, though I have to point out that even though T.N. may not speak for you or me, go out opening day of rifle season to any public land and you will see that he does in fact represent a large portion of the hunting population.
Here is the issue. You (and I, though I am still learning) are out miles from the beaten path enjoying the process as much (if not more) as taking game. Meanwhile, the slob (got my hand slapped for that term, but it seems the most fitting 4-letter word I can write) is 20’ from the truck in plain view of cameras, both press and anti-hunters.
I really don’t want to take away from Ted. His intentions might be good. He is a fellow hunter and don’t see anything that says he should not be hunting. That said, I am in disagreement with his methods.
I guess the issue is that there are not enough of us to represent what hunting should be. And even if there was, it is very hard to compete with glitz and glamour. Who has time to shoot thousands of arrows just to hopefully get a shot at 10 yards when they could pick up a “bow” and be shooting 70 yards the next day.
I guess on top of everything else, this too falls on us. Like I mentioned in another post, lead by example. How many hunting photos out there where a hunter has a death grip on a six-pointer’s rack with a caption “This is what it’s all about”? Just make sure it’s not us. Nothing wrong with being proud of a trophy, but it’s all in how you present it. I would say police our own ranks, but the more I’m out, the more I think it’s an exercise in futility. Besides, I really am starting to think it’s not “our” ranks. Let uncle Ted have ‘em. Wish there was an easy answer, but as it stands, I will be out sitting in the woods, or teaching my kids to shoot a bow, or taking a walk in the autumn forest with my wife, looking at the miracle that is before us and being content knowing that THAT is what it’s really all about.

in reply to: Bow prototype — the Inferno #25262Since you are on the topic… ❓ Does anyone have a review / opinion on the “American”? Truth is, I don’t need another bow. I just wanted a heavier one-piece for the off months and for further down the line. I was thinking a 70/70 (“/#). I am doing better with my 62″/50# hybrid TD. Didn’t think I would get out hunting with it due to skill, but I am confident within 10 yards (saw one at 20 few days ago, so they’re getting closer [or just used to my stench 😆 ]). Any input is appreciated. How long of a process? Thanks all!

in reply to: Private land (more ethics) #25135I think “actions speak louder than words” applies really well here. If they do not hunt, then they are not taking animals out of season. So it’s really up to you to do the right thing. Just keep doing it and they will see what the difference between hunters and poachers is. Then, when the anti’s try to paint us all with a broad brush, they will tell their friends “that’s just not the way true hunters are”. Be well.
