I honestly have never heard of Mr. Barta until now. I still do not know anything about him other than the fact that he had a TV show. I am more gearing this towards the “high-fence” issue. I posted a thread about preserve-hunting a while back. I was truly interested to know people’s opinions. I was sure no one would champion the taking of animals that way, but I was looking at a “bigger/broader picture” to see if there were situations where preserves might actually be beneficial.

What I am getting at is that this is another case where I would not fault a person for using a preserve. Not having the use of ½ of your body is taxing; physically, mentally and spiritually. A hunt that is “accessible” to such a person may be a form of therapy that no drug or doctor could offer. To me, it would not be hunting, but harvesting (never understood that word being used for game) or simply slaughtering, but for someone who cannot wheel through mud, muck, snow and steep cliffs, it might be [literally] a life-saver.

Again, this is just IMHO. I am not claiming to be an authority, not am I advocating preserves, just “philosophizing” a bit. Just FYI, the other reasons I thought preserves were ok was that 1) there are species some cannot afford to pay >$25k to hunt in their natural habitat, and 2) as the prices drop and the antlers [on the preserves] grow, I think it will keep a few “slobs” out of the woods. Again, this is all IMHO, just food for thought. Hope it isn’t taken as offensive in any way. Be well.

Nor is it about the game when we hunt. It is about sharing our passion with the ones we love. It is about becoming part of something much bigger than us and appreciating our place in it. Great story. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to take the family for the next “walk in the woods”. Be well.

Had a URI (Upper Respiratory Infection) about 2 weeks ago. Lasted a week. Co-worker is out right now with a [lab-confirmed] case of the flu. I work in a Long-Term Care Facility (formerly known as a “Nursing Home”). We have had a few respirator outbreaks here, but no confirmed flu cases. We have also had a few GI (stomach) bugs. We managed to control them before it spread too much. All-in-all, it is about normal for staff and residents for this time of year. Seems the increase in visitors (for the holidays) brings with it all the little nasties. Wish you all a speedy recovery and a Happy New Year. Be well.

Thank you all again for the suggestions. The PVC bows I have seen. I believe I got the BYB from Amazon, so I think I read about it in there. Pretty cool. I might do that as a side project. Monk: a build-along wouls be super. Just remember, I am VERY new to ALL of this, and probably have none of the equipment. I was going to try to get away with a plane, a drawknife [maybe] and some sandpaper. Plus the sealer for bow and arrows. I like the suggestions above for size/draw-weight. I might get away with 2 bows from the one branch if I split it right. I also have a black walnut trunk about 2-3″ wide, but it has only been drying a month or so. The maple branch is from last October (2011). Well, let me know. I come back from FL the 31st. Thanks again everyone. Be well. Merry Christmas, happy and safe New Year.

                Etter1:

Fort Stewart proper or the area? Does the Ft. allow hunting and if so, do you need a safety course/permission? Up here in PA, at FtIG (Fort Indiantown Gap) you can hunt the base, but need to take THEIR safety course each year. Sounds like a good time though. Thanks for the update. Be well.

OK, this will probably go down in the top 10 dumb questions on the forum, but how can I tell sow from boar without getting that “close and personal”? Don’t both have tusks? Is one built different? If I get that good a look from behind, chances are, my shot window has already passed, so is there a trick? Also, I might be hunting from a tree, so even harder to tell. Thanks for the advice. Be well.

Monk: I second Ruhlman’s “Charcuterie” as an awesome read and full of great info. So far have made a few recipes from there and was not disappointed in the least. The “duck confit” sounds good too (can look up online for a recipe), although I have not tried it. Be well.

                      Oh, and one more thing…

From the advice above, I assume a longbow is ok for them? Recurve also or is one better/easier/more forgiving?

Monk, thanks for the info. I have a maple that fell. Branch is between 4 and 6 inches in diameter. I figure if I split it, I could get two bows. Since I am making 20# or less, I would not be AS concerned about growth rings, knots, etc?

It sounds like a fun winter project. Matby even cut a small shelf on the bow to keep the arrows a bit more centered. I actually have about a dozen 5/16″ dowels 4′ long. Would make some great kids arrows.

So here is the main concern: What stain/varnish do I use to finish them (bows and arrows)?

                        Thanks again for your help.

DWC: I agree completely. I remember as a kid being happy that I got an arrow to fly, let alone stick in something (ground usually, or a stump). I think it would be great for the kids. Also, may be part of a land lease next year. Would be a great place for them to “go wild”, and if they like it, maybe we can move them into the bow you mentioned and tighten their groups to “broad side of a barn”.

                        Thanks all. Be well.

scout: Thanks for the suggestion. I actually had his book “Meat Eater: Adventures from the Life of an American Hunter” in my Amazon wishlist. I punched the one you suggested up, but it’s not on kindle 🙁 . It’s actually not available from Amazon, so I put it in my wishlist under used. The review sounds great. I added “American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon” as well.

skifrk: Good advice. Do you know if it works for hog as well? I hope to bring back some “pork” from FL, and it will have about 24 hourse on the road (in a cooler) to “cure”, so that sounds like an excellent time.

Thanks all. Please keep ’em coming. Be well.

                                stykbo,

You can do a search on bing.com for “Stu Miller’s dynamic spine calculator”. It should be one of the top choices. Or I can just give you the link here: http://heilakka.com/stumiller/ . Oops! 😳 It is an Excel file. You can play online or download it. There is something very similar (I believe it is even credited to Mr. Miller) on 3RiversArchery.com ( http://www.3riversarchery.com/spinecalculator.asp ). It is the same exact thing, just in a different format, but the info is exactly the same. Hope this helps. Be well.

No, the deer season has need interrupted by game regs. 😆 How have you faired since your first? I’m still O for a million, but lovin’ every minute of it. I’m driving down to FL Christmas Day into Boxing Day, so I will miss the grand [re]opening of deer season for us. Hopefully I will return with many pounds of fresh pork. As far as the end of the world, doen’t look much different than it’s been. Darn! I was hoping for at least some fire and brimstone. Well, day’s not over yet 😆 . Are you getting out for late season? If you get a 5C antlerless tag, you can get either sex here until end of January. do you plan to try the late season? Hope all is well. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Talk to yu soon. Be well.
