in reply to: How Many Over 55 #40092
I’m 56 and shoot 55# at 28″ longbow. Also have a ’66 Bear Kodiak that is 72# @ 28″, which I can shoot comfortably.
in reply to: Backyard Wildlife #56281See a wide variety here out my window. Saw 5 jake turkeys earlier, a woodchuck, squirrels. Jumped a coyote out of the same brush pile 3 times this week, she must have a litter of pups there. See deer daily, saw one with horns staring to develop yesterday. Saw a bobcat earlier this spring.
in reply to: Bald Eagles #20878There is a nest near my home in Michigan. My brother was near the nest last spring and there was a dead adult on the ground below the nest. He called the Dept. of natural resources and they sent a biologist out to get the dead eagle. They did an autopsy on the eagle and found 3 holes through its skull. The pair of eagles was still around the nest, and they said this eagle probably got to close to the nest and one of others killed it, no bullet holes or other injuries, just 3 talon holes in its head.
in reply to: Bear Alaskan Semi-recurve #35856I picked one up last summer at a garage sale. I was driving by and spotted it leaning on a fence, stopped and bought it for $2.00. Gray glass both sides, double shelf, 43#. Had a few scratches, put new bear hair and leather, and shoots very nice. I’ve seen several others with orange, or red glass, but only this one with gray.
in reply to: Anyone own a Shakespeare? #35041I have a Shakespeare Wonder bow, 62″ 45#, serial#C3459. Maroon glass on back, pink glass on belly.
in reply to: Group sizes? #34842I started an NFAA league 3 weeks ago, 1st week shot a 250, 2nd week was 260, and last Tuesday was 266, shooting 66″ BW longbow 55# @28. 2018 XX75’s cut to 28 1/2 BOP. Usually average 12-15 points lower with wood arrows.
in reply to: Your first whitetail? #56018I hunted 10 years to kill a deer. Started in 1967, and killed my first in 1977, 76 was the first year tree stands were legal here in Michigan, that made it much easier to get a good close shot.
in reply to: Black walnut bows? #40758I talked to an older gentleman at the Michigan Traditional bowhunter shoot at Pine River Michigan last summer who was shooting a Black Walnut selfbow that was 42#@ 28″. He said he had made quite a few out of black walnut. He also had several out of hop hornbeam. I bought a black walnut stave from him for $20.00 but have’nt made a bow from it yet. I was also at Gary Davis’s, with a group of people, several years ago, and there was a gut there, working on a black walnut stave.
in reply to: Your Maximum Yardage #40745I normally like to see the deers eyelashes before I shoot, 5 to 8 yards I would guess. I some times shoot farther if conditions are good, and the deer is not alert. I would guess the maximum is about 15-18 yards. I once shot a doe that was about 8 yards, the wind was blowing hard and she was very nervous. The shot was broadside, but she herd the bow and was able to completely turn around, and I hit her in the opposite side/hind quarter. I was very lucky and cut her femoral artery, and she bled out quickly. It was definitly a learning experience, and in the 20 years since I don’t shoot if I suspect the deer is nervous, or aware of my presence. At the time I was shooting a Howatt Hunter recurve that was 65# @ 28″.
in reply to: Anyone going after spring Turkey #30473I have a blind called the big house made by Ameristep that is 74″ tall. I shot a tom last year from it with my 66″ longbow and there were 2 of us sitting in the blind. I’ve also shot one from among some thick white spruce trees. I sat back in the spruce and called, then the tom came right down the edge. Shot was about 5 yards.
in reply to: Anyone going after spring Turkey #25958Got my permit but the my season wont open until May 1. Toms have been gobbling here for a couple of weeks, so I’m getting anxious to get after them!
