in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #27169
Big boars are just flat out hard to kill.
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #27164They say every picture tells a store
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #27156This boar had almost 3″ thick shield, my 60lb Centaur and 642 grain arrow only got about 10-11″ of penetration right in his heart.
I am 100% sure a 50lb bow with the same arrow would of been nothing more than a story about ‘I hit a big one, but lost it “
The light tackle crowd can go sale there stuff to some one who doesn’t know better.
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #27147The thickness of the shield of the boar above was only about 1 1/2″ my arrow jumped through him.
This is what I have been talking about, there are boars, and there are big boars.
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #27141UM,,,,,Troy nether, I know the Man, so I go straight to the top. 😀
God has blessed me my friend and I know that, but really, I’m just a Hog-a-halic, I might have swine flu, 😆
Big boars are like shooting a 30″ muledeer buck, with out having to wait to get drawn for a tag.
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #25089This boar was shot at around 10 yards in his bed, the arrow jumped through it so fast I thought I missed it, ( vary rare for an arrow to jump through a boar of this size )
I must apologize for the camera work, we are rank amateurs, but we have fun.
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #25074Crystalshrimp,
I can’t believe this post is still around, I was born and raised in So Cal. all of my hog hunting is here, it’s a great state geographically.
I have hunted hogs from 8000 feet in the snow, to the desert floor, to the Islands off the coast, you can hunt year round, so they get a lot of my attention, mostly after deer & elk.
I think our hogs have adapted to the environment, I call them mountain hogs.
We get our share of eaters, once the freezer is full, we switch to hunting big boars, we hunt lots of hogs we let go, looking for a monster.
Monster boars really floats my boat, a big boar has to be at least 5 years old, some I think are 10 or more years old, there not dumb, they wont let you make a mistake.
I hear way to many story’s of guys shooting a big boar, only to never find it.
This boar was shot at around 30 yards strong down hill, he went about 400 yards after being shot in the heart.
In this video I miss spoke ( I have know idea why I said, what I said, about how heavy the arrow was ) the arrow was 642 grains with a 31.38% efoc, why I said 472 I have no idea, ( maybe still high on adrenalin lol, who knows ) the Tuffhead broadhead alone is 350 grains, with a gold tip 300 30′ long, footed with 3″ of 2117, I am using a centaur chimera @ 60lb, and I never short draw as I use a clicker and the shot is around 6 yards, enjoy.
in reply to: A whole new take on ethics #24817I’m glade you guys got my warped sense of humor. 😀
As I read the post, this was all I could think of.
Now lets not be naive about how the world runs, MONEY has always ruled, and if you have the money and you want a 400″ whitetail you can buy one.
Now we as Traditional Bowhunters have, buy choice, chose a different path, for us, it seems that we want to connect more with the whole experience, that just the killing of something big, is not the whole for us.
By choice, we have made it harder to even get a kill, let alone a monster, it’s the journey, not the destination.

And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don’t do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she’s ten feet tall
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you’re going to fall
Tell ’em a hookah-smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you’ve just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she’ll know
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen’s off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head
Feed your head
This sounds like an acid trip from the 60’s 😯
in reply to: You can hangup the straight jacket #17306Hey Troy,
If we can’t use the straight jacket, can we use shock therapy 😯 lol good job really.
I see you use a gap system, what is your point on?
I’m guessing around 20-25 yards for split fingers and a lot less if your 3 under.
Just curious.
in reply to: Quietest Fletching #17287DWC: Quietest Fletching?
Answer, is Owl feathers 😯 sep, Fish & Game frowns on their use.
A few lifetimes ago, I found a barn Owl that got hit on the side of the road, I pulled the wings off and made some arrows with them 3×5″ they was vary quit.
Then I found out you cant use anything from a bird of pray, so, they went the way of the dodo bird.
I would have to say the A&A fletching is the quietest so far, I might try and make some up say, maybe 3 or 4″ long but 1/4″ tall.
That’s the fun of it, playing around finding new ways to skin the same cat.
I will tell you that 90+% of the arches/bowhunters are so over fletched it’s not even funny.
I shot a 3D shoot with no fletching, with a tuned arrow you don’t need them, why in the world would I shoot 5 1/2″ nanners, all I need for broadheads is enough to overcome my broadheads from trying to steer my arrow.
in reply to: A long look at fletching and EFOC #17260jgilmer
Just my 2 cents, I use full length feathers, there 10-12″ long, so I get 5-6 A&A fletch from one feather.
I first cut a bunch 2″ long with a pair of sharp scissors, put them in the jig and make my arrow, them I take a sharp 3″ razor and cut a straight angle back and only 1/2″ tall, then I stand the arrow straight up and cut the backs off making them flat on the backs.
So again 2″x 1/2″ and I am using 4 fletch.
Hope this helps

can you tell us a little about the fletching you are using?
Jgilmer, this should help you, it’s all about them.

in reply to: New heavyweight Tuffhead is here #60035Can a 2 blade really leave this kind of blood trail from a hog? 😯
in reply to: Coues kill — arrow set-up #59865Hi Rogue,
Yes, I do shoot off the shelf, and no, I don’t even notice when the arrow steps up, I chuck up the aluminum shaft in my hand drill and spin it on a file, so the transition is vary smooth.
Hi Dave,
No, I use the aluminum inserts, only because I’m to cheep to buy those brass inserts, if I want more weight I use a brass screw in the back of the insert ( 4 for a dollar ) or I use an internal footing.
I might try the brass some day, I know they are a lot stronger, it’s funny the evolution of my arrows, I have been all the way up to 1050 grains ( if I was shooting out of a tree stand I would use them, as your shot distance is way more predictable ) they make my bow dead quit and pack a big punch.
I like moving the weight to the front with a high EFOC and yet not shooting a telephone pole, as 90 +% of my hunting is spot and stock or still hunting, and I never know how far my shot will be, most are under 20yds, but some are longer.
