in reply to: Ground Blinds for Idiots… #53882
Hey Wildschwein
I’ve hunted quite a bit from the ground taking turkeys to black bear w a blown shot opportunity at a brownie to boot. Done it from dressed up blow downs to commercial pop up hub styles. All work w similar things to look out for.
– Set up w a religious respect for the wind in such a way that you can keep cutting/trimming to a minimum.
– Never look an animal in the eye. They sense life as do we.
– Forget camo etc. Wear black especially if in man made blinds. If in blowdowns stay dark out of any light as much
as possible.– be extra sure to clear any and everything at your feet. Ground hunting is an extreme close range game and you’d be shocked how loud dry grass/twig/leaf can be. Especially when something that can smack u back is 5 feet or less away. I once had (last season in fact in NEW JERSEY not 250 yes away from where 3 little girls played in their yard:!::!::!:) a black bear sow w 3 cubs flip my blind over and chase me to my truck. Want exciting? Won’t get that in a tree ( though I’ve been chased up them and out of them before too:!:).
I actually have that on BBerry taped but due to some kind
of corruption nonsense I can’t retrieve it. Any techie want
to help with that one I’m all ears!in reply to: Building that EFOC & UEFOC arrow #53816So Troy
I’m shooting Griz stick Alaskans AND Beman MFX 400, full HIT insert in both (75gr) with Ashby 315 gr broad heads.
Basically you are saying I can take my typical 4″ fletch, cut it down to a 2.5″ shield and let ’em rip?:roll::?:
in reply to: Osage Question #53784Hey Guys
I’ve talked before about some day wanting to build my own self bow. I have so many questions and when I’m ready I’ll pick up correct books (Bowyers Bibles etc). But for now, could someone please xplain what is meant when you say you “have to find the growth ring to back the bow”? Do you mean scraping wood down along a single growth ring? That can’t be easy…..:?::shock:

Dr Ashby, or Troy or whoever for that matter – can you explain what A&A fletching is? What does A&A stand for etc…what type size cut of feathers etc etc etc…..:?:
in reply to: Does anybody really pay this much? #53251wildschwein wrote: jmsmithy I agree with you to a point, but if an ethical hunter uses the very best quality equipment he/she can afford, then where does that place hunters using selfbows or knapped heads. Do they work? You bet! Are they the highest quality gear that person can afford? I doubt it. Ethics are such slippery things.
Love the discussions on this site, always guaranteed to make a fella think.Wildschein – Agreed…I have not tried to go the selfbow/knapped head route (yet!). Too your point…I like to think those talented soles producing their own equip have the utmost in quality equipment. They know EVERY nuance of every milimeter and what each bow/head is capable of. Or at least that’s what I like to believe! 😆
in reply to: Does anybody really pay this much? #52629Thanks Doc. You have done more for all of us than can ever be articulated in this or any forum. And thank you for explaining ths situation at hand more eloquently than I could ever muster. To Dabersold’s point, and I certainly get it, ethics are ours as hunters solely. The value of our equipment certainly won’t define them or our ability as hunters in and of themselves. HOWEVER, I do believe that an ethical hunter is compelled to use the very best quality equipment he/she can afford.:!:

Next to a buffalo that’s about as good an animal as one can possibly get to test out a broadhead on. Keep up the good work King.

Awesome King!! That’s a helluva piggie!!!! Congrats!!!:lol:
in reply to: Does anybody really pay this much? #51638My .02 ….
I do believe, to a degree, you get what you pay for. Look at a good custom made recurve. Go Schaefer, Black Widow etc. You looking at well over a grand, + $200 if you want takedown. OL Adcock? If you can get one, don’t even ask price. They going 12-1500 USED. I’m the last one who can afford it but I must say, after learning about Dr Ashby’s research and biting the bullet, I’ve never had broadness flight or performance like those Ashby’s. Are there less expensive ones that do same thing? Sure there are, but in my experimenting phase, it was less expensive in my mind to just buy Ashby’s than to buy 3-4 differing types of similar weight/style and do complete taste. Couple that with the fact that resharpening etc and you have heads that will literally last a lifetime ( how many other broad heads have you bought broke disposed of? A “S*^#Load for me)
Like a lot of us on this site (& TradGang, Black Widow, OL Adcock, etc etc etc) we spend WAY MORE than we need to in order to get the job done. An archer, I believe, is by nature an inquisitive tinkerer looking for better, more efficient simpler way of doing things. The deer/bear/elk whatever doesn’t know or care or understand whether a piece
of chipped stone lashed to river cane or an Ashby on a Griz
Stick Safari just pierced it’s pump station, and frankly we
really don’t/shouldn’t either. Simply a matter of how each
of us as archer/hunters ( or hunter/archers – defining you
is up to you ) choose to ply our trade. Is there a right answer to how much is too much? To me not really BUT to my WIFE – well my friends – I’ve found out the hard way that I have repeatedly surpassed the
figure!!!:lol:in reply to: My hunting outfit – opinions please #23454This has been said a lot here but I’ll repeat it…
Africa 2007 – 22 Animals – SCI Gold all but 3 (Silver and 2 Copper). Wearing Tan pants and light green shirt/vest. ALWAYS aware of cover and wind.
Texas various years as well as Iowa and multiple East Coast states – Ground blinds )wearing black sweats and Hoodies – dozens of whitetails upto 159″ 11 point and almost dozen bears…
This can go on in more location w differing animals…
Point is I’m a BIG believer that RealTree and Mossy Oak and MothWing etc etc etc are all great products and ALL work (this goes for Carbon anything as well) IF THE WIND/POSITIONING are correct AND you are MOTIONLESS/QUIET…otherwise, they’ve caught EXACTLY the game they are meant to catch….CONSUMERS AND THEIR (OUR) WALLETS!!!
You’re well on your way to the greatest sport / lifestyle there is…
Be well.
in reply to: Mid Summer Feeling #23438To TRL242, and all us folks…
Couldn’t agree more, especially about incessant bickering etc…
Currently raging, especially in NY, is the “Crossbow Question”. The debate is not only endless, but IMHO, ridiculous.
Take out the word “crossbow” wherever it appears in any of these arguments, go back in time (we’ll call it the 70’s) and put in the word “compound” and IT’S VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interestingly, we are all still hunting with whatever implement we choose. AND THAT, to me anyway, is the beauty of the society/country we live in.
Hunters, regardless of the implement we choose (some of us are more correct than others ) need to stick together and fight the real enemy…those who would take away everything from our guns to our crossbows to our compounds to our recurve/longbows to our self bows to the very staves we choose to make them out of!
Be well my friends…straight arrows…tight lines and smile and thank God we can have these arguments!

in reply to: Bow restoration #21211Hey Dan
Joe Latsch just did a 25-30 yr old Bear Kodiak Hunter for me. Absolutely amazing job, reasonable and done faster than we thought. I highly recommend him.
in reply to: Broadheads #17086As for broadheads, read everything you can from Dr. Ashby, then make your decision…I find two bladed fly better IMHO…Be well and good luck…
in reply to: Bear Kodiak Mag 1953 Refurb/refinish? #52218Thanks Mr. Griz,
I’ll shout out for him…If you hear from him let him know to get me as well…
Thx as always and Merry Christmas.,.
in reply to: Arrow Tuning!? Help! #56994Thanks guys
I just shot my MFX, 30″ 400 with 145g r tips 5 in left helical and MFX bare shafts … They grouped all together, I’m thrilled about that… also shot well with 150gr Magnus Stinger 2 blades.
Now for the Griz Stiks? I’ll go on the site and see what they say about how I can get them to tune….
I’m open to any and all ideas….
