      Dave and Steve,

Thank you both for your help. I guess in a fit of, we’ll call it “ingenuity”( :?::!: ) I decided that a little old fashioned Gorilla technique might work….SOOO I grabbed one of those rubber sticky grip things used for jar lids etc and grabbed my MFX mid-shaft then wrapped the broadhead in a thick towel wrapped in a tanned deerhide (better grip than towel) and went for it…and yes, I broke the bond.

Exactly as you say Steve – a bit of research later (little bit of cursing also aprinkled in) revealed that if you use the BLUE Loc-Tite (which I did) it is meant to be removable (with force – says Loc-Tite folks). Had I used the RED version, very different situation as that is considered a permanent bond. Only heat can SOMETIMES break the bond. Found out (also hard way) that the HIT Insert glue provided with MFX shafts not meant to be removed (w heat or anything else 👿 )

You know, I’ve read in various places about gluing left bevel heads. I do not have a lot of trad experience, and hope to get my first Trad Killed critter this season, but have never had a problem in my practice sessions with bheads backing out.

I’ve always tightened them (Ashby’s) down pretty well and so far so good. I got into gluing in last week or so as Wednesday 19th buddy of mine and I have hired a float plane (with a pilot ❗ ) to drop us deep into the Adirondacks and chase bucks and bears around…last thing I wanted was broadheads backing out in middle of no-place 😯 Of course I have plenty of Ashby’s to bring (Thanks Dave 8) )with me. Hopefully they stay in shafts they are intended to be in, piercing the critters they are intended to pierce, and let me pick them up, re-sharpen, and do it again :!::!::D

      Be well my friends

I can tell you in my wheel bow days I did succumb and try them…shot 7 deer. Three had biggest holes I’ve ever seen. One was ok, not a great shot but worked. I’ve lost throughout my bowhunting career (35 yrs) exactly 5 deer – three of them where with mechanical heads. So 7 deer shot, 3 lost. Of those 3 they were ethical shots but deer moved on each one. Never found them. Also, of the 7 shot, not one broadhead was able to be used a second time. My opinion – junk and unethical. My son (12 yrs old) asked me about them. I related my experience. He was smart enough at that point to look at me and ask why would anyone use them? That’s my boy!!:D

Stick with 2 blade, heavy single bevels and have at ’em….

Don’t know about the sulphur but I can vouch for Thermacell. I’ve used in Alaska, throughout Canada and Adirondacks and works on skeeters, black flies etc… as for breathing the stuff, not a problem yet! AND – I’ve had it blow right to deer and bear, no issues…:D

            Hey guys

Dave to your wool point – I love the stuff and been a bit smitten (for good or bad – not sure 😳 ) with KOM stuff. Problem is HOLY COW it’s expensive….One of the guys on another TRAD_ _ _ _ forum ( 😉 ) did turn me on to Ebay….never thought of them for this stuff. Up until now, I’ve purchased used woolens off that other forum. Point being, in the used market I’ve found woolens of that quality have been in terrific ( literally like new ) shape and a fraction of the price. I’ve recently picked up 2 pairs of Bunwarmer pants, and HillBilly Bibs (and currently bidding on pair of Mukluks on Ebay – I guess I shouldn’t let that out but – oh well, we’re family 😆 ) for LESS than $500 for everything including shipping. Search of the site shows pants, in XXL, are close to $600 per pair new, and bibs are worse!

Shrimp – definitely look to our fellow Trad brethren on various forums (inc Ebay). Stuff is well priced and our folks do take care of their stuff…I defy anyone from looking at my purchases and telling whether or not I purchased new.

Plus, it’s another fun “hunt” 😀

I’m caught somewhere between hysterics and absolute disgust….

So if some dope actually used this thing, and some dope will no doubt, at what point does the blood/flesh/viscera completely obscure the laser? You know some idiot will actually offer that as a real criticism…..

I also recently saw some device that holds “ANY BOW AT FULL DRAW!!! NO PHYSICAL EXERTION NEEDED!!!” – Order yours now!

Holy S&*^*&(t!!!!! If this keeps up I might become an anti! 😉

Geez Nate…would it help calling wardens etc???

Problem we have in ADK’s with calling DEC or the game wardens is that the Great State of NY, in it’s infinite wisdom of leadership through financial ignorance (maybe Cuomo will be better, jury still out) has repeatedly raped accounts dedicated to wild life and wild places (unfortunately a National epidemic so it appears). Because of this, DEC officers / game wardens working for years with no contracts/raises etc get nothing compared to state and muni law enforcement (who btw are also getting hosed from what I understand) and are being downsized through attrition. I understand now there are less than 10 DEC officers for the entire 6 MIILION acre park!. I’ve come to know one or two (coming from NJ, when we first bought up there my No. 1 concern was tresspassers) and it is unbelievvbale how short staffed and hamstrung they are. I’ve actually been told not to bother calling them on trespassers or road hunters as, unless I have pix, they could never get to me in time to do anything about it. The area is rural so only other law enforcement are State Troopers, who, when my alarm went off few years ago took 1.5 hours to get there as they didn’t know where it was!!!!

Lucky for me a close friend and neighbor is a federal officer :D:lol:

Scary state of affairs to say the least…try and get the SOB somehow!!

                      Depend Jon

Generally yes, you can take some twist out. Depends how bad, deep etc. I’m no expert here but I have luck warming the limb with a hairdryer and overtwisiting back the opposite direction. Yo uhave to play with it a bit.

Couple ideas, contact Black Widow directly (they in Nixa, Missouri). I shoot BW’s and they speak to that situation directly in the owners manual/dvd. I’m sure they can give you specifics. Also, they are wonderful about service so you might want to send it to them and they’ll do it or at least explain what needs to be done and give you an idea of cost. Also, there are a number of great “Bow Drs.” out there who could do it for you. One that I’ve used and had great experience with is Joe Latsch at Prairie Traditions (prairietrad.com).

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

                      Be well.

My question is how much left of center is your shaft hitting at say 10yds, 20yds, 30yds, and 40yds?

Also, what fieldpoint setup are you using? Are you using a 190 glue on with 125 adpt?

The reason I ask this is I can make you an adpt that will be atleast 175gr., they aren’t the prettest things out there, but they work. I’ve been playing around with taking a 250gr field point and making it into a broadhead adpt. I’ve managed to get weights from 175gr to as much as 205gr with 175gr being the easiest.

50 grs may be the ticket, may not. It all depends on how much left of center your shaft it impacting the target.

I don’t mind making you acouple to try. It could save you afew $$$$ until you find out where you need to be. With all the other bad luck you have been given lately spending more $$$ on shafts right might be nipped in the bud if these heavier adpt will work. Later on you can pick up a new set of MFX and start from full length.

                        Troy

Troy I’m shooting MFX with 75 Gr HIT insert and Ashby hear (with ABS 315gr field point for practice).

What kind of adapter are you refering too? You think I should go heavier than current setup? I’m hitting not bad out to 30 yrds or so. Anywhere from 1-3″, depending on how well/clean my release is!

My Grizstiks not quite as good…I think they a bit overspined for my 50# Widow PMA. The MFX I believe are shooting much better now that I’ve taken the time bareshafting etc….I’ll continue playing with my Griz however, my next bow will be a bit heavier as well, perhaps 60#…we”ll see…

Well Dave, I hope you caught something 😀 !

Steve, you are in my neck of the NJ woods my friend…In fact Pyramid Mountain is my second choice for my son and I to pull permit for deer management program operated by Morris County Park system. I’m fortunate enough to have approx 400 acres in various pieces of private land to hunt here in NJ (unheard of I know…I’m VERY fortunate) but trying to do our part as part of the county management plan. Want my son to understand the entire cycle of what the whitetail is, and what has become here in NJ…Hunters have gotten SOME encouraging stats of late (put aside how indivuals feel about managemenbt and some of the various “hunting” orgs) – here in NJ bowhunters particularly have made enormous inroads in supplanting the hired killers (under the guise of deer Management Companies who simply come in, bait and shoot as many as possible with, often, silenced firearms) through municipalities/ county parks etc allowing bowhunters to come in and help reduce numbers. We take the meat, or donate depending on each hunters situation, as well as all trophy parts etc….

Anyway Steve, that’s what I’m doing at Pyramid Mountain. I live in Morris County (Plains actually) and hunt routinely the Denville/Chester/Newton overall areas. Anytime you’d like to join, shoot me a pm and we’ll get together…Good thing about NJ hunting, the deer numbers are such that if you hunt all legal weapons (bow,MZ,Shotgun) you literally could take up to 2 antlerless deer, per day from this Sat through Feb 11 2012….Grab a license and drop me a note my friend! 😀

                            Sickening…just sickening…

                            Dave,

the story you tell of the AZ waterhole has been played so many times over here in NJ. I no longer hunt w a shotgun in my state, only bow or maybe mz as there are statistically a boatload LESS bow/mz hunters. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked in to a stand I’d take time etc to place month before season only to have some idiot either set up within 50 yards or sitting in the stand!!

I believe in the concept of Hunter’s Ed for kids but it should include a basic IQ test with repeat testing mandatory for every dipstick who carries a hammer and nails into the woods…I always believed portable stands did least damage, as opposed to the Taj Ma-Hell in Nate’s picture. 🙄

                              Amen JG!

When I come home I have all three of them (wife two sons (assuming one of the two boys not already with me – other guy is a fly fisherman, so I have year round smiles on my face 😀 ) waiting for the stories. She gets it, understands it’s a huge part of who I am and, I’m very proud to say, when we met over 20 years ago she was a not quite liberal BUT, NYC educated broadcast journalist (college major as well)…who…few years later, had her NJ hunting licenses!
Even did her final thesis on whitetail deer hunting from a pro perspective…
Her only rule – I have to call when I get out of the woods – back to the truck.
Now that’s a reason to come home with a smile, no matter what is (or isn’t) in the back of the truck. 😀

Agreed on 3:1. I’ve used A LOT (as I’m sure we all have)of broadheads over the years, through wheelbows. Some were definite gimmicks, some worked, well in fact. I’ve come to believe (after spending time here, reading Ashby reports etc) that heavy, single bevel 2 blades way to go. I have had great success with one three blade head, one piece, forged no nonsense( G, I wonder which? 😉 ) through compounds. But now that’ I’ve become basically exclusively traditional, I find Ashby’s and those like them are the way to go. Evidence is undeniable. As far as expandables go, the only deer I’ve ever lost (3 whitetail does) where ALL hit with expandables. I used them 3 times, various brands, and promptly threw them away. In fact, my Alaska guide won’t allow them in his bear/moose/’bou camp AND has turned away manufacturers hunts sure to get him on the boob tube… 🙄

                                That’s enough evidence for me…

I agree Steve….I apologize if I didn’t make clear the fact that I, or any of my close hunting compadres, have never once taken, killed, harvested etc etc ( 🙂 ) any animal which was not fully utilized. My family loves the meat (especially from a naturely sage marinated pronghorn 😀 ), in fact wild game is really the only red meat my wife prefers. Always the hides are tanned and put to use in everything from garments to gear. If I have a season in which I get more game than we as a family can use (including giving away to extended family and friends) we foot the butchering bill and donate all meat to various soup kitchens, FHFH chapters etc – we even have (here in NJ :!::!:) a high school in Sussex County that encourages hunters to drop all the deer they’d like to donate, whole – gutted only – to an onsite 24 hour cooler. They then use them as part of their FFA program, teaching the students as part of their curriculum to skin, butcher and actually deliver and sometimes prepare venison for a number of homeless shelters, soup kitchens, church charities etc etc).

I have also seen , unfortunately the opposite extreme of the horrendous, slovenly behavior that not only fuels those animal rightists (as opposed to animal welfarists – of which we are -again…sorry for the numerous plugs – but you REALLY have to read “Heartsblood”…)that seek to end all hunting but actually made me sick and question my own ethics as if I belonged to the same “club” as the slobs who have literally killed (actually I’d use murdered here) trophy bucks, on private/municipal property here in my area and actually left the carcass and literally sawed the heads off at the base of the neck/head junction.

To Steve’s point – these vermin should not only be ticketed etc but IMHO, imprisoned as well as a public campaign illustrating that these scum have absolutely no resemblance to any legitimate hunters.

I guess my point is that we should be proud of what we do, who we are, what we as hunters represent as the cornerstone of humanity and human-ness. We live our nature, we do not deny it, we embrace it as well as all the critters we love to interact with, no matter what the outcome of that day’s or season’s hunt…
