in reply to: The boys of summer #22495
All joking aside, here in Republic of NJ, SOME of us are fortunate to be able to bow hunt our backyards 8)
Of course some joker will ruin it eventually 👿 …

To glue the skin on I would use titebond II or III. It will work better than barge cement in the long run. Put some blue painters tape along the sides of the bow to keep the glue from going where you don’t want it to. Then apply glue to both the skin and the limb. Affix the skin to the bow and get the wrinkles and bubbles out. Wrap the thing real tight with an ace bandage to hold the skins on. Once dry, shave the excess skin off the sides with a sharp razer. Remove the tape. Then use the back side of a kitchen knife or a plastic knife to rub the scales off.
Then you are ready for final sanding and finishing.
Thx Guys
Steve, some specifics….
Do I put skins on THEN Stain right over them? If so, I assume pull scales off etc first. OR do I put stain on, affix skins, then stain again…?
Also, I’ve been told yes AND no here…I want a good tough somewhat glossy finish so can I poly over everything once skins affixed and scaled and entire thing stained (Tru-Oil gun stock finish is what I’m leaning towards…:?::?:
Lot to digest…
BTW — http://www.americanheadhunters.com has copperhead skins, look to be in beautiful shape as well as all kinds of other “stuff” related to skins/bones/skulls of reptiles…

But for shooting, and especially hunting, FORGET IT 🙄
Contacts work wonders and nowadays they are VERY comfortable (been wearing almost 30 yrs) I’m not a candidate for Lasix (dry eyes) but do wear 7 day conatcs when I’m in the bush,… 8)
in reply to: Rattler / Copperhead Skins #61026Steve,
Do you stain the bow at all or just let the poly “pull out” the grain of the wood (hickory in this case):?:
The bow is completely unfinished, bare wood one piece (selfbow I assume)…
Barge cement to put the skins on???

Congrats My friend ❗
You are embarking on what I am sure will become a lifelong passion….As someone who used to own an archery shop (admittedly a compound “speed pro shop”) in early 90’s and recently (2 years or so) switched to stickbows, I can only tell you it is ADDICTING…Haven’t picked up a wheel bow since. Couple that with the discovery of the joy, reverence and glory of the hunt (notice I didn’t say the kill) and you will be hooked…
I can offer a bit of advice if I may…I’ve never been a “start small” kind of guy BUT, I would listen/read a lot of what the guys here have to say, especially Dave…He is not only exceedingly experienced in elk hunting but also in wilderness camping/survival etc…
I would offer this, first, as to your archery skills, practice with a bow/setup that you shoot well and are comfortable with….When you feel like you’re there, practice somemore!
An elk is a rather large animal, become familiar not only with it’s vitals etc but also, how to break one down once you have it on the ground, and how to pack it back to camp/out of the wild…definitely NOT something you want to learn on the fly….will make for a miserable/disappointing experince if all that meat/trophy goes to waste…
You are embarking on a calling, not a hobby my friend….enjoy, learn, experience and it will soon be a part of your soul….I know it has for all of us here 😀
in reply to: Rattler / Copperhead Skins #57921Hey Tony
Just checked out his site. Awesome skins it appears. Western Diamondback and Prairie Rattlers. Also says call for different skins. I’d love Copperhead if I can get them. I have no issue w 3 Rivers and have bought all kinds of stuff from them. I’ve heard, however, good and bad about their skins so thought I’d look around.
Thanks for the tip 😀
in reply to: Grizzly broadheads, redux #56460Hey Dave
Just out of curiosity, how do you compare Tuffheads to ABS Ashbys (taking price out of the conversation of course ❓ )
Just wondering…you know I’ve been an Ashby fan… 😀

in reply to: who carrys a backup gun #47339“Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My”….too easy for trivia 😛
At my place in ADK’s, biggest danger I’m aware of are dopeheads…my neighbor (few hundred acres south of me) walking his own place tripped over a hose…of course he followed it to the 72 pot plants it was irrigating…Have I mentioned my buddy is an Federal Agent?! Bright bunch those dopers…
After multiple close bear encounters throughout the states and Canada my biggest issues were black bears…charged in Manitoba stopping 7 FEET away and, believe it or not, good ole NJ…chased out of a blind by sow with triplets when one of the youngsters decided it was time to go check out the chubby guy in the leaf looking tent 😯 Both issues required changes of clothes BUT were handled with no shots fired (holding wheelbow both times and a handgun in NJ a BIG no no….:evil::x )
In Alaska was stalked by a huge blonde brownie after I blew it with my bow (didn’t draw soon enough and he caught me….The stinker circled around, came up from behind me, made another pass then walked down trail about 50 yards and hunkered down in a bush beside the trail. I was so awestruck by the wild ferocious beauty of having him that close (inside 20 yards) that, dopey me never really felt threatened…to the point that AT NO TIME did I even think to pull my .500 SW and harvest what would have been damn near a B&C bear… It was truly one of the greatest wildlife experiences of my life…. 😀
in reply to: Calling all Bow Brothers!!!! #30858Hey Steve
Didn’t know you frequent that area? Great folks, cool place. I’ve learned quite a bit from them. Little bit of a hike, takes about 50mins to hour from my place in So West corner of Adirondacks.
I love it there in the big woods and love my not-frequent-enough trips to chat with George and Marcie. I was hoping to get to the Trad Shoot this Sunday but, alas 👿 , unexpected sales meeting early Monday am reared it’s ugly head!!
You get up that way much??
in reply to: Calling all Bow Brothers!!!! #28977Thanks Robin
Wasn’t sure if such an endorsement was ok by forum rules. Definitely some great folks.

I’m trying to get that Abbey film and not working. What was name?
As for Phoebe Cates in Fast Times….
in reply to: AAARRRGGHH or I've made it… #14092Yes Steve,
Jeff and Jen are great folks. Really cool to see well made, hand crafted bows actually being built in Jersey. Who’da thunk 😯 At a reasonable price no less ❗ ..can’t wait to see it too…All African Olive with Olive riser (really highly figured…saw some of the wood today, still needs to order block for riser)and Offset by either dark cocobolo or ebony face/tips. Jeff saying he’ll give it to me at Whittingham…perhaps you can help partake in its innaugural shoot 😀
I will be at Whittingham, in fact Jeff and I just discussing it this am. We also talked about Denton Hills (I’ve never been and he had some VERY pointed things to think about regarding that event ) PM me and we can set up some details as time draws near…love to get together face to face and chat with TradBow Brethren!!
You gotta promise though not to disclose to anyone my shooting “prowess” 😳 😆
Looking forward to it!
Be well >>>–> 😆
