in reply to: primative lonebow #37127
There will be several bowyers at the Traditional Archery Expo in Kalamazoo, MI this weekend. Many of them build self bows. Hope to see many of my “Campfire forum” friends there.
in reply to: I draw the line way, way before helicopters #46358Great response Steve, You expressed my feelings exactly. I also, use my old 4×4 Chevy pickup constantly. I could not live where I live without it.
in reply to: "Holy" Ground #10897I have hunted here in the Huron National Forest of northern Michigan for 60 years. will start my 61st year on Thursday morning. I can’t imagine being any place else on Oct. 1st.
in reply to: GPS in trad bow. #29457I agree with eidsvolling! Here in northern Michigan the woods are so dense that when you are in them you can’t see the land marks needed to orient your map and compass. I would challenge any body with just a map and compass in northern Michigan to determine exactly where they are to within a few feet. With a GPS you can determine your exact location and determine if you are on public or private property. In Michigan it is not the property owners responsibility to post the property {although most do} it is the hunters responsibility to know where he or she is.
in reply to: GPS in trad bow. #20612Our hundred acres in northeast Michigan butts up to the Huron National Forest which has 978,906 acres. So it is possible to leave my property and wander for days without trespassing. Map, compass, and GPS are always with me. I use all 3 when ever I am out wandering. I am also always prepared to spend the night if need be. And now that I am well into my seventies, I also carry a cell phone.
in reply to: January hog with a few pics #9370Great job!! Now the not so fun part of getting her out of the woods and processed. Congratulations!
Thankfully I have some big strapping grandsons close by that will get the deer out of the woods and into the truck for me. Of course they then expect Gramma to fix them backstraps fried with mushrooms and onions along with mashed potatoes and gravy. She never complains, she is just happy to have them at our table.
in reply to: Cross-Dominance and Instinctive #56532I read someplace that about 75% of major league baseball players are cross dominant. That way the batter is looking at the pitcher with the dominant eye and not having to look across the bridge of his nose. Don’t know if it is true or not but it makes sense.
in reply to: Garbaging for Bears #41848I would invite any “out west” bear hunter to northern Michigan during the legal bear season (late September through early October) and demonstrate their “spot and stalk” methods when they can only see about 30 feet due to waist high ferns and golden rod. Michigan black bears do not follow established runways like whitetail deer.
in reply to: Traditional Snowshoes for Hunting #38127My wife and I build our own snowshoes for us and the kids, grandkids, and now great grandkids. We use the Objibwa style which we feel is the best for northern Michigan forests. It is easy to get white ash for the frames because of the emerald ash borer killing so many of our beautiful trees. If anybody is interested in this great winter hobby, Gil Gilpatrick has a great “how to” book on the subject.
in reply to: Backcountry College – Ultralight shelters #32073Checkout http://www.boundarywaterscatalog.com They carry 10×10 nylon tarps with grommets in place and tie tapes attached. Been using mine as a makeshift shelter or as a dining fly for years.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #55014By the way, the reason I’m not out this morning is because it is raining like crazy! I will sit in the rain on opening morning (if it is raining hard I won’t shoot) but not after opening morning. I am a retired guy and have plenty of time to hunt when it is not raining.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #54993Wednesday was the opening day of my 60th season of archery here in the beautiful Northern Michigan woods. In those 60 years I have only missed 2 opening mornings. One in 1962 when a jerk professor scheduled an 8:00am exam and the other in 2002 when Christine was putting up a valiant battle against breast cancer. She gave me hell for not being in the woods but I couldn’t leave her.
in reply to: Bear Takedown #57915I honestly feel the Predator is the finest takedown recurve on the market. You will also find that Ron Pittsley will turn himself inside out to provide you with the exact bow you want.
