in reply to: Can I shoot this? #56158

I’m no expert but say string it up, exercise it and give it a good look. If all looks okay, shoot it. That’s my thought though, I’m no official.

        T-

Thanks for responding. That’s the type of opinions I’m looking for. I’ve got planty of time before I’ll make out to elk country. But like I posted earlier, I’d like to find my set up and shoot it so I know I’ll be ready. Thanks again for your opinion. That’s what makes this place , country and internet, so great! So, is 53# that far from being heavy enough? You say 55#, assuming I’ve got all the other factors down, arrow set up, accuracy, shot placement, broadhead, etc, is my 53# gonna work? Thanks!

I’ll chime in on this one. I have a takedown recurve and a one piece longbow. I can say the recurve is nice for traveling. I’ve never flown with it, but I’ve traveled and have been able to break it down and put it in with my suitcase. However, I’m always concerned when I put it back together as to wether or not I got everything put back together in line. Because my bow was made by an amateur bowmaker there’s an ever so slight little bit of play in my limbs. It always makes me wonder if they’re in line. Now, with the one peice, I string it and go hunt. If I had the money, I’d buy a one peice and would plan on shipping my bow ahead of me if I ever flew to go hunting. Have fun making your decision, it would drive me crazy…

I shoot a take-down recurve. Why you ask? Because that’s what my mentor helped me make. I had a longbow a year or two ago. Was interested in trying one, bought a used one, shot it good too. But I felt as though I was cheating on my recurve. Donated my longbow to the troops in Iraq. Since then I’ve wanted another one. But then I made a red oak board bow, can’t shoot that one too well yet. So I picked up my recurve again, shot the first group of arrows out of her and have decided that this will be my one and only. I still like the looks of a Howard Hill but the length gets me. Where I hunt a long bow, literally, get’s hung up too often. So, it’s my snaked recurve from here on out. And it’s easy to travel with. Just my 2 cents. You can keep the change. 😀

              Thanks Mark,

I wasn’t so sure myself until I looked at them more and more. I was torn between rattler and copperhead. I like the brown/tan colors in copperhead. But with the green and gray colors in my riser I was advised to go rattler. I really liked how they turned out. I’m happy to hear someone who isn’t to keen on the idea likes the way it looks. That says alot. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Dave, I didn’t realize the skins would fade, I’ll have to keep an eye on them. Thanks for the heads up.

I’d like to echo those above and say “Nice job”. I’ve enjoyed your magazine more than any other. In fact, when I had to “tighten the belt” at home I decided that your magazine would be the ONE to keep. Quite literally. I look forward to it’s arrival in my mailbox every two months. It also brings me enjoyment at the end of the day at work. Thank you so much and I look forward to another 20 yrs.

April 18th I should arrive in Nebraska and once again walk my grandmothers property. I love stretchin’ my legs out there. The pace of life out West is sooo much nicer than here in the Chicago area. Anyway, it’s opening day for shotgun on the 18th. I take a few friends from work and they all use guns. They laugh at me. But, I go my way and they go theirs. We always have a great time. Good luck to all and be safe.

Im no expert on elk hunting. In fact I’ve never been. I hear this question asked a bunch though on other forums as well. I always think to myself, don’t forget to check CO state regulations. The state you are going to hunt in may have that weight set for you. I know Illinois and Nebraska do. My 2 cents. Good luck this fall.

I shot a kit made recurve for the last 15 yrs. Last year I bought a 45# longbow (Viper Deluxe) and was pleasently surprised by my immediate accuracy. Maybe I was doing something wrong with my recurve but I haven’t shot it since. I say give it a try.
