in reply to: Hunting Pressure in All It's Forms. #21772
Now that we here in michigan have to share the bow season with the hordes for crossbow hunters the pressure here is getting crazy as well. I hunt both private and state land. I dont deal with too much pressure on the private land and i also dont hunt it much. But on the state land the pressure is getting insane. Yes i can go way deeper to avoid it and i often do. But there are alot of times i want to hunt for a couple hours closer to home before or after i work. My pressure is different than yours is but massive pressure no the less.
I did a podcast recently that talks about how i deal with the pressures i have and also tips to deal with a variety of hunting pressures. its episode 23 if you click my link in my signature if you want to listen to it.
Pressure is a bummer. But i personally feel with all the gun hunters now invading the bow season with crossbows its only going to continue to get worse.
i feel your pain.
in reply to: Blood trail #21317Use a GPS with the tracks or bread crumb trail feature in your grid search. This way you will know any areas you missed or skipped and can go back and check those better. A gps is one of the best grid search tools you can have IMO.
I wish you the best in trying to recover it.

in reply to: A wife's perspective #10480That was great. I let my wife read it and she loved it also.
in reply to: Acute target panic… How to cure? #60795that’s exactly how target panic hit me a bunch of years ago. I could not get to full draw. as soon as my mind was locked on I could not finish my draw and my anchor would be 3 inches short but I could not draw any farther as my mind would not let me.
How I beat it and never had to deal with it again so far after 20 years was to do the following. now keep in mind there are probably better methods out there now but this is what worked for me at the time.
I started drawing the bow aiming at the ground about 10 feet short of my intended target. come to full draw aiming there. then raise the bow get locked on, and count for 2 second count during witch making sure everything is soild and locked. then releasing. I did this for about a month and then was able to go back to my normal shooting and not have target panic.
I know its a little different of a method but it worked for me. my thought was it would break the link between my mind and body and let me take control of the shot again.
in reply to: Backcountry College #3 – "hangin' around" #60787Clay, Another awesome video!!! I always have carabiners and paracord with me. never knew that I could do that!
Thanks for sharing.
in reply to: Furthest shot on game? #54687I killed a ground hog at 65 yards. Was actually hunting with a compound shooter that used his rang finder to see how far it was. That was my farthest ever.
Whitetail farthest was paced off at 32 yards. But 90% of my shots are 10-18 yards.

in reply to: lessons learned #43407paleoman wrote: Back before GPS I got all screwed around in northern Maine. Took out the compass and decided the compass was drunk. After passing the same moose track after a couple hrs of corkscrewing around, I said maybe that thing knows something! By God it was smarter than me:wink: A good humbling I’d good now and then.
This is the story of my life…lol
If i had a nickel for every time i argued with my compass id be a rich man!
So far though, the compass has proved to be right everytime.
I will add a lesson learned.
sunrise does not have a snooze button! nothing better than hitting the snooze one more time, but nothing worse that rushing to get on stand because you slept in.
If you think you will be warm enough add one more layer.
Pee BEFORE you get all dressed up, nothing worse than having to pee bad and then having to fish thru 11 layers of clothing to get a handle on the situation.
in reply to: Just for Fun! #43395That is a great idea!
I do something sort of like it and i tell ya it makes a huge difference.
What i do is when im practicing if i make a bad shot i have to stop everything and sit for 3 minutes. kind of like time out…lol
It works great and really makes me concetrate as i dont want to waste time sitting around.
in reply to: Filled My Buck Tag #41100Congrats! Even though your daughter didnt get hers yet i bet she enjoyed being out there and part of your hunt. Hers will come soon enough.
