Great post Steve. I too have been eyeing the Black Widow line and frankly, I just don’t like the way the bows look. I know that’s silly but to me it’s a break point and will stick with Bear.

Perfect Steve! Thanks much. I am thinking of getting a Bear Ausable. The #50 I shoot now is a Montana.

Folks, I exagerated the almost losing an eye thing to give some ooomph to the dificaulty I had with the tape. I literally can not see the stuff when I try to peal off the protective part to expose the adhesive; thus the eye reference.

I’ll second David’s reply. About a year ago, and against my better judgement, I bought a bow through EBay. When it arrived I checked it out and it appeared to be okay. Got it strung, figured a nocking point and took it to the range. It shot okay for about a dozen arrows. I hung it on an the bow rack and as I walked to the target to get my arrows I heard a sickening ripping kind of sound. Could not figure out what it was. Then when I returned with my arrows I saw that the lower limb had simply failed and the bow was ruined. Never again will I buy a bow unless I have actually touched and shot it.

Leon Stewart is a good guy and a good bowyer. I have an LS Slammer that I purchased from the original owner. It shoots great and although it was not “made for me” I adjusted myself to it and love the bow. Someday, soon I hope, I am going to contact him again, make the short trip to his shop in Coatsville, PA and see if he can build me a custom longbow.

Dave I think I saw the general site 2 or 3 times in my search but I never drilled down enough to hit the right spot. Thanks again to Ed.

Hi Dan. This is the one I have and in all honesty, and now that I have seen it in person, can be made from a a single sheet of leather and by someone without much tallent. The one I saw actually came up over the fletching and the strap had a buckle in it and there was a quantity of leather lacing that looked real professional. Much better quality than mine and when I spoke with the owner I thought I heard him say it was made by this fellow Katz (SP?) from W VA. The quiver he was toting was of much better quality than mine and that hood covering the fletching was perfect. I am actually thinking of ordering some leather and make a modification myself or try a DIY. But tools and time are an issue.

No actually. I am looking for a leather constructed quiver that is positioned on the side of the archer and low on the hip. Arrows are withdrawn from a lose arrangement of them and from the side of the quiver. Thanks for the suggestion but my quest continues!

I do not have the article but I have put together a small package that I take with me hunting and hiking. It consists of: flint striker, cotton balls soaked with vasaline in a old pill bottle, Neosporin, needle and thread, bandaids, aspirin, about 10 feet of parachute cord, a few energy bars, some caffeene pills, a mirror and a folding knife. Also, not part of the first aid but some things I always have when hiking or int he woods in general: .38 S&W snubby, small can of pepper spray, cell phone.

I switched from a BowTech Tomcat to a Bear Montana #50 and it was a challenge. But, an enjoyable one. I was shooting Gold Tip 3555 with a 125 payload from the Montana and I am in the process of swithching to wood arrows (and building them from components). So far I have found that the best spine for me is 45-50 with a 5 inch right wing helical fletch still delivering a 125 point. I just ordered a dozen tapered arrrows from Elite Arrows (Paul ?) and I am very much looking forward to them. When I spoke with Paul on the phone and gave him my draw length and such he asked if I minded if he took some liberties with my order, as based on my draw length and bow poundage. So, I said “no problem, go ahead”.
