Everybody quotes me, but nobody answered my question. When I was at a stand today in the middle of the hay field, right next to the corn field, was it baiting?

No, I didn’t see any deer, got rained out (cold and wet).

Would it be different if it was my field, and I planted it to attract deer?

And what town is that bear in?

BTW. I’ve gone deer hunting 4 times this season. Saw 2 deer (not close enough to see antlers). And, despite my age, this is my first season hunting deer.

Been there done that. Rotator cup surgery was 14 months ago, and I will be on a deer stand this afternoon. Actually I would say I was fully recovered last spring. It’s not perfect, in fact I think one of the tendons didn’t hold. I have occasional pain over there, but at my age pain is normal. What matters is that it works. Been shooting a #45 pound at my 22″ draw since spring, and more accurate than ever. Although fly fishing and archery were a bust last year, both ate fine now. And, yeah, I’m 65.

I was asked today how I can sit still in the woods, when I cannot sit still in the kitchen having a cup of tea, or in church. I think it goes back to my childhood. I grew up in a dysfunctional home, and the woods were “safer” than home. Thus, even today, even after dark the woods are safe, and relaxing. That is my home. No, it is not sad. Even though I feel happy at home and there hasn’t been dysfunction at home for decades, I am still more at home in the woods. One would think I would have “gotten over it” by now, but some things never change.

Don’t tell Bill, but I saw a big chicken of the woods near a deer trail yesterday. Not going to harvest it for him, or tell him about it, because if it is harvested it will scare the deer. 😕

Based on what I’m seeing in Wall Mart, baiting deer must be legal here. I don’t see why. Fields are full of left over corn, and the hay fields are still green. That’s where I will be tomorrow. Why spend the money at Wall Mart? On the other hand, am I hunting over bait when I sit at a stand where the deer come into the hay field? This isn’t a “natural” food source (neither are the apple orchards). When I got my license I paid the extra $5 for a bear tag, but doubt I will actually go looking for a bear. The one I saw last year ranges over three townships, where he is at any given point in time is anybody’s guess, and he is the only bear in those three townships. I don’t see how anyone could/would actually plan a hunt for a bear without considering a food source, and tend to think the food source is going to be gut piles from deer kills. Too frugal (not cheap frugal) to buy bait when it is all over the place anyway.

I’m willing to bet someone has tried to use it as a tree stand and is too embarrassed to tell us about it,,, or is still in the hospital. 😆

OK, this was about15 years ago, and has nothing to do with TradBow, BUT…

I was in Maine, in a canoe fishing for smallmouth. I knew there were loons in he lake, but had never seen one. All of a sudden there was one about 3 feet from the canoe. Damn near dropped my load I was so surprised. No big flutter of wings and splash like most ducks make. He was just THERE. Learned later that they swim under water after fish, and can suddenly appear anywhere on the lake.

The monster acorn crop is in New Hampshire, kinda mediocre down here in Mass. If you would care to bring down a few truckloads…

😀 I might be one up on you. I have a pile of broken bows on the back porch (again) ready for the campfire. 😀 makes me feel good to know I’m not alone here. Is there a broken bows forum? Just remember if you are not making mistakes (breaking bows) you are not learning. As for broken risers; I am now wrapping mine in fiberglass (after having several break). It Works!!!

Prettiest poop I’ve ever seen, and I’ve changed a lot of diapers.

Painter in me had to respond. If you are going to varnish with poly, you need to use a SPAR varnish. That is an exterior varnish, which has a UV blocker. Otherwise the suns UV rays will break down the varnish, and you will have cracking, peeling, etc. If you have woodwork which is varnished, look at the window sill on the sunny side of your house. That is what happens to interior varnish when exposed to the sun. In realty, you probably won’t have enough sun on your arrows to degrade an interior varnish. Exterior SPAR varnish costs about twice as much as the interior stuff. Really depends on how long your arrows last. Guess it all boils down to how long you are gonna look for arrows when stumping?:? I like to make them functional, and expect to loose them. Thus no cresting, no paint, just stain, but I do use exterior spar varnish. On the other hand, since bows last longer, you damn well better use an exterior SPAR varnish. None of this applies to the various oils used in finishing. I have heard the best oil finish is Mobil 1, after 6,000 miles in the crank case. If you want some, I have a lifetime supply under the back porch.

Sounds kinda like trying to read a core dump in octal back in the ’70s.
