Grew up wearing bean boots, or something like them in the Adirondacks/Green Mts. Slipped in the snow. Had to walk uphill sideways.
Now I wear sneakers until it snows, then switch to snowmobile boots. Rubber bottoms/nylon uppers with a lug sole, and thick felt liners (Tolstoy mentions felt boots in War and Peace). Hate them, but they are warm, and give good traction. I have worn sneakers (with a lot of socks) in below freezing weather for hours in comfort. Remember the shoes/boots are to keep you dry and prevent abrasion. It is the insulation that keeps you warm. In extreme cases I have put plastic bags over my socks inside my sneakers (kinda like stocking foot waders). Worked!! Just remember to buy shoes big enough to accommodate the socks without cutting off circulation. Yes, I have summer sneakers, and winter sneakers (if I tell you the sizes you’ll laugh at me).
I actually bought a pair of combat boots, feels like walking in wooden shoes.
in reply to: Where is your anchor? #10760Actually I have 2 anchors, and don’t know where either one of them are, as the hunting season started before the canoe season ended. So things didn’t get put away properly. Hoping I don’t trip over them in the snow.
When I shoot the bow… There is a neat little hollow that my thumb settles into just in front of my ear. Strange, I know, but it is to get the longest draw I can with my short arms. That’s 22″. Also gets my anchor right next to the eye. Biggest fear is that I’ll get my curly locks tangled in the bow string. When I hear about 30″ + draw, I start thinking you must be dragging your knuckles on the ground…

in reply to: New Traditional Cover Scent #9673OK, Audrey insisted I tell about the bees….
We all got stung, and every time I came home from work, I found Audrey hiding outside until I killed the bees that got in that day. They were in the bedrooms, living room, kitchen, everywhere. One day I killed a dozen with an issue of Trad Bow. Thought about taking a pic, and starting a thread called DEAD MEAT. Remember that Alfred Hitchcock movie THE BIRDS. That is the feeling. Skunks and mice are a lot more polite than bees. The bees and skunks are gone for the winter but we are going to be worrying all winter about the spring thaw…
in reply to: New Traditional Cover Scent #9662We don’t have nasty things like that here. We have Fred the mouse, doesn’t take up much room, doesn’t eat much, quiet most of the time, just takes a run across the floor now and then when Audrey is on the throne. Also have the Skunk family that lives under the shed, watches us do target practice, watches the backyard campfire, and none of them have sprayed. Yet. Far more polite, and civilized.

in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #7863They are mocking me.
Yesterday and today were the last 2 days in the bow only season, and also the first 2 days with snow.
Still hunting was a bust, due to the noisy snow. If it warmed up just a little (or a little wind), the snow would have been falling from the trees, thus making covering noise. Since I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that I’m not going to connect, I did more scouting than hunting. Not discouraged, remember I fly fish, when my time comes a dumb deer will show up, and I’ll say something like “Gee, that was easy.” 😀
More deer tracks then I expected. Some in the places I expected, and none in other places I expected.Good to know. I also saw scrapes..right through the snow, big ones, and I thought the primary rut was over (with lots of yellow snow). Still curious why I have seen tracks, scrapes, but no rubs, or beds?? I’m thinking I’ll get a orange hat and vest, so I can hunt the secondary rut middle of December. Don’t want to be out there for the first weekend. Was looking like the Michelin Man in camo, Pillsbury Dough Boy would have better. Like the idea of a painters coveralls. As I remember they are made out of Tyvek, waterproof and warm. 😀
Leg muscles, and joints are sore…walked a lot. I have plans, lots of plans. Want to try 2 bow designs, make a bag to hold all of the “stuff.” Need clothes that are warmer, with better freedom of movement. Thinking I’ll start looking for wool at the discount fabric store. There is a real conundrum here. If there is a enough room for layers, it is too big and baggy. Nylon stops the wind, but it makes soooooo much noise. 😕
Mocking me… First thing I saw when I went out Saturday was a deer track right in the center of my tracks from the day before. 👿
in reply to: First Successful HBO bow build! #63640Very, Very happy for you. Hoping you didn’t keep track of how many tries it took or how much it cost.
Every time you shoot it keep in mind that it could break the next time you pull the string. Not that I want you to be apprehensive, or spoil your enjoyment of your new toy. Just speaking from experience. Besides, no matter how awesome it is now. when you miss a deer, you may feel a little different. Actually when you miss a deer, anything can be blamed. Anything is easier than taking the blame yourself.
BTW. The bow that I made last summer was awesome… Right now I’m planning something better, and who knows how many tries it will take…
in reply to: HAPPY HOLIDAY #62698So now I have to encounter the mentally deficient critters before Rogue? Actually I have been thinking about this as I waited for the mentally deficient in the cold, cold woods today. You may notice that most of the high level stuff occurs in the Frontal Lobes (the space behind your forhead). Things like What should I have for breakfast? What color shirt should I wear? and in the case of a 10 year old Why is that boy staring at me? Oh, and a few other things like E = MC2, rocket science, and brain surgery. Creatures who do not have a forehead have to rely on instincts, which are in the back of the brain. Things like sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Got that? So the question is: Why do us high forehead guys have so much trouble outwitting a critter with no forehead?
Obviously it doesn’t matter to Steve Graf, which suits me just fine, since I have just one day left in the archery season. 😕

Hasn’t happened and probably won’t again.
in reply to: Lost Season, Maybe Worse #61174Be thankful we have doctors to help us, lots of people don’t. I remember growing up (in the ’50s) and seeing the slate quarry workers who had broken arms, legs, etc. and “healed” without the benefit of surgery. Pretty strange. They still went back to work and did what they could. I know that even if you do not recover fully, you will find a way. 🙂
