in reply to: The Bow that Surprised You #33512
The Bear Super Mag 48 came out in ’66. I was 16 and wanted one. It was out of the question, and in the fall of ’66 we moved to the city. For some reason I never had the urge to get involved in archery till s few years ago. Besides I had bad memories of bows that were too big for me. But whenever I thought archery, the image of that bow, those curves, came to mind. That is the image I was working toward building my own bows. Always thought It would cost too much, not enough time (remember I am a single parent for the second time), blah, blah. Now that I finally have it I’ve noticed that Fred Bear has the same exact grip on the bow that I do. Don’t know how long his arms are, or how tall, but his bow fits me to a T. Now that I have it, I think I should have passed on one of the fly rods I bought 15 years ago and bought this bow. Not saying all of them, just one of the fly rods (Orvis 8 wt, parabolic). On the other hand I am being told that God’s timing is perfect.:D
Have to get an 11 year old off the phone and into bed.
in reply to: Mass produced hickory longbows? #33482Still rubbing it in with the green grass and flowers. We do have some (brown) grass, but there is a snowbank bigger than my car sitting on top of the fire pit (the snowbank that was bigger than R2s camper). We DID see 3 geese Monday, But 3 geese is kinda lame. On the other hand Audrey saw Mamma skunk the other night. Couldn’t tell if she was pregnant, and did not ask. Audrey is sick of the snowman rug in front of the back door.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #33472Hoping you don’t get too attached to Minnie, and Audrey doesn’t get too attached to Fred.
Cam. My son wanted to be a slater with me, till he sweated out a few summers on slate roofs when he was in High School. Now he is a electrician, and thinks it is really neat to make money regardless of the weather.
in reply to: Anyone Experimented with EAOC? #33465As I recall, from my childhood, the expression is
Ass-backward. Not that it is a major point, but it was generally attributed to farmers. But I come from a rather obscure corner of the woods.
Generally when I have that many gory details, I keep them to myself. Once you have sorted it all out (assuming you don’t ass-backwards shoot yourself) let me know. If a physics major shows up it would be a great help (limited to high school physics here), but in all my years I have never met a physics major who was an archer, or fly fisherman. This could be telling us something….

in reply to: Looking forward to Chamberlin Ranch #31335bare a*s shooting…in wine country…
I wanna see pics!!!! Sounds like more fun than streaking was in 1972!!!!:D
I know that WOJO. Didn’t really mean rude, meant rude in the sense of making fun. I have 3 brothers, and short jokes are a family tradition. When I went to college the “little kids” grew into my clothes, and I had to get up at the crack of dawn just to have something to wear.
I GOT THE BOW. Its beautiful, so delicate, and strong, awesome curves. Beside the bows I have made the limbs look so thin, delicate, yet are just as strong. Think that the BEAR throws arrows faster, at the same pull weight. Which is something I have suspected all along. The handle (riser) fits my hand and straight wrist style. Shot a couple dozen arrows, the last 6 were in a 4″ group – 6″ to the left of bulls eye, but a good group. And that is without tuning, don’t even have a nock point yet, haven’t played around with brace height, etc. That means all of these arrows I have are the correct spine, etc. Big relief. I did have trouble stringing it, but went to a local shop an bought a stringer to replace the one I had made. Could have made a better one myself, just too lazy, and couldn’t wait.
I DO have string twang!! Guess the quiet string is unique to my bows. Need to go dig up some beaver fur, and make some balls. Sorry the silencers you make from bass bug legs are just a little too ugly. As I’m sitting here thinking about it, mink mittens might have a bit more class than beaver balls.
Really awesome thing about this is that Audrey is just as excited as I am. 😀
in reply to: Traditional Snowshoes for Hunting #29673After seeing the Hammers video, maybe next years Income Tax return will buy a video camera, so Arwen can film me doing a downhill face plant in snowshoes into a 5′ drift. YES, the alum shoes are better at up/down hill, but not good.
in reply to: spruce shafts #29657What a nice offer!!!!
in reply to: Shots From the Past #29012Been there R2, remember using SNO PROOF to try to get the boots waterproof. Didn’t work, we always had wet feet.
Also had the rubber boots the dairy farmers wore. They were waterproof, but COLD. When we got home from a trek in the woods (upstate NY) our jeans were frozen stiff up to the waist (OK so I have short legs). The leather straps on the TRADITIONAL skis/snowshoes would get wet, stretch, and they all fell off. No nylon straps, parkas, just cotton, and wool.

This Arwen (mystery child) you reference so often sounds like a precocious li’l dickens!
I’ll keep looking for my own heir apparent!
She is my grandaughter, aka constant companion, motor mouth, etc.
assuming that you are not being RUDE… I am a small person, and have short arms. Actually I shoot with a straight wrist, and anchor near my ear to get just a bit more draw.
Yes, I buy my clothes in the BOYS dept.
Sitting here with my sleeves rolled up because they are too long…
Audrey says I have a perfect body.
in reply to: Too much, not enough, had enough #27970Since there was some mention of what is to become of all of the “stuff” when we leave…
Arwen started asking (when she was 8) When you die do I get your fishing tackle, car, canoe, bows, etc.
So it is already spoken for.
in reply to: Silencers (or the lack thereof) #26922Now that I’m getting a “store bought” bow, maybe I’ll have string noise to solve.
