in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #14708
How did we get from traditional archery to rocket science?
I have a hammer story to tell…
Terry (the sane brother) got a hammer he really liked, and because he is such a nice guy, he gave one to each his 3 brothers for Christmas. Nice guy. Several years later we were putting a roof on Dad’s house, and the hammers got mixed up. Didn’t think much of it… at first. Then Terry came over dropped my hammer in front of me, and said “Your hammer sucks.” I couldn’t convince him that I had not modified the hammer, until he tried Mike’s (the mean brother) hammer and decided he didn’t like that one either.
I also know a slater that used the same slater’s hammer for 18 years, because “The new ones don’t work.”
We adapt. If you are shooting bare bow, and all of your arrows are bent in the same direction, and to the same degree they will all shoot the same, and after 10,000 shots (give or take) you will be accurate. I am not convinced that the ABSOLUTE spine is all that important. What IS important is that the spine is CONSISTENT. Or….. The spine that YOU are used to. Which may be a lot different from what it is supposed to be.
If you look at all of the shapes and sizes of both bows and arrows over the eons it is obvious that there is a lot of variability in what works.
Remember that if I wore pants with a 36″ inseam, I would do a face plant before I got out of the kitchen.

in reply to: Deer Calls? Or Just Blowing Hot Air! #15661I sill remember looking at a Bass Bug (or perhaps a Royal Coachman) and thinking “That will never catch a fish.” And when I tried them, sure enough, they didn’t. But just a few weeks ago we were watching a bass bug intently, and a bass exploded on it. The big difference is that it sometimes takes a practice, and confidence. If you are going to catch fish you have to fish EVERY cast with the expectation that the fish of a lifetime is going to take. If you don’t you don’t catch ANYTHING.
I rattle and grunt a lot (the girls laugh at me) and, no, a big buck has yet to come chargeing up to me. But I didn’t catch anything the first time I cast a bass bug, or a Royal Coachman, or a Muddler Minnow, or a few hundred other flies.
There is an old saying that if you do not believe, perhaps you haven’t tried it enough. I have read that experienced callers only see 40% of the game that responds to the call. How do you know that you haven’t called up a deer, who saw you from behind a bush, and laughed his azz off at you? You have to practice untill you are good, And do it EXPECTING a big buck to come charging out at you.
Remember the Musky fisherman that catches a fish every 10,000 casts.
When I go fishing with a leader too light, and loose a fish I keep saying “Better to have hooked, and lost, than never hooked at all.” Never would have hooked him on a stronger leader…
Great that you actually had a shot at a deer. Had to do a lot of things right to get there.
in reply to: My beautiful NY buck #15959GREAT!!! Nice to hear about your success!! Not calling it luck. There may be some luck there, but without the skill, knowledge, and just plain woodsmanship, the luck would be wasted. YOU got a deer!!
On the other hand, you need a dirty old hat…
in reply to: filled buck tag #49228wow!!!! Was out this morning and all I saw was squirrels and blue jays.

in reply to: Single bevel Question… #30488yup, over thinking is just what you are doing. I try to limit myself to questions that can be answered, at least outside of Bible study.
in reply to: How we sharpen our broadheads. #29163File, then a stone (Smiths), then a 600 grit stone, then strop (which is a piece of belt leather). Not to the point where I am shaving my arm, but I’m close.
in reply to: Seats vs The Ground #29157Bet if I saw a pic of that I could figure out how top make one out of aluminum.

I saw 2 deer gut piles that the bear got last fall within 24 hours. I have had visions of fighting a bear off any kill I get. Not likely, but it makes a good story. Honestly, there are bears in all of the places I hunt, and I know they have seen me, more than I have seen them. They have no fear of raiding bird feeders, so I doubt they would hesitate even if the saw me shoot it. Keep in mind that they will know as soon s it is down (that also includes the skunks, ‘possums, coons, coyotes, buzzards, etc.) , long before I will know, and be heading there as soon as they know. So I will probably have an audience as I gut the animal, which will include everyone mentioned above and there will be a long parade following as I drag it out of the woods.
in reply to: Don't Do This! #26976Put my son (in a car seat) on he roof…once, stood there looking at him a sec, thought about all the things I had left on the roof, and promptly took him off.
Yeah, I did a cell phone too…
