in reply to: Hello! New guy here! #32160
Hi guys, been a while since I posted here but I wanted to highly suggest reading the Witchery of Archery by Maurice Thompson. Will go well with David and Howard’s books.

Looks like a some beaver and some spiders on the ends
That’s what I was thinking. I’ve never seen a set up like that before and was wondering how/why he’s using, and I’m assuming he has matched set on other end, 6 silencers: 4 spiders and 2 beavers! 😯
in reply to: Waterproofing feathers?? #33301Chad- thanks for steam advice! My kids left their arrows out side the other day and they got soaked. Gonna give it a try.
in reply to: New Arrow Creations #33288dabbersold- that’s an interesting string silencer set up you’ve got there. And some sweet arrows.
in reply to: Fred Bear DVD Collection #63489You guys just talked me into it. Been thinking about getting DVDs for a while but got sidetracked with upgrading my motorbike (summer is a double beveled blade for me). Clicking my way now to order!

in reply to: Bowhunt in Argentina #20932Carbini- From my windowless office nestled in the suburban sprawl of Chicago I can only admire your avatar- hunting hogs on horseback in some exotic place. Ahh, the stuff that fills ones day with daydreams and overdo expense reports….. my goodness, I need a freak’n vacation!
in reply to: Technical question plz #20922dead- check your emails spam blocker. Sometimes they actually work too good. hehe, now its time to order more viagra…
in reply to: Most Admired Predators #56083Wombats!
Well, ok, they’re herbivores. But they’ve got spunk! From the wiki:
“When threatened, however, they can reach up to 40 km/h (25 mph)”
And…
“Humans who accidentally find themselves in an affray with a wombat may find it best to scale a tree until the animal calms and leaves. Humans can receive puncture wounds from wombat claws as well as bites. Startled wombats can also charge humans and bowl them over, with the attendant risks of broken bones from the fall.”
“…bowl them over…” LOL, that would be something to see!

in reply to: Technology Kills Tradition? #55172It’s all so personal, isn’t it? My first bow was a Shakespeare Kaibab in 1982, wood and glass. And the fist full of arrows my uncle handed me were aluminum. Amazingly, they shot straight and true, although he just dug them out of an old box in his garage after I proudly showed him my new bow- tuning indeed! So now when shooting my Bear Montana with my Easton Heritage arrows I am a traditional archer. My tradition. To bad I can’t tune as easily…..
in reply to: Kids' Bows #55081Black Rhino has some great looking longbows and gear for kids. I originally did the same thing as Steve with the take-down recurve and $30 limbs- but now my son wants a longbow like mine.

in reply to: Please introduce yourselves, I'll start #55074Hi everyone! I’m Darren from the NW burbs of Chicago. I’m 44 and returned to archery after twenty plus years when my father in law passed and left us a couple of bows and gear. I dug out my old Shakespeare Kaibab, which at 56 lbs was surprisingly heavier than I remembered! Did some research and saving and got myself a Bear Montana and now have been enjoying the agony and triumphs of tuning (my brain still hurts!) My son and daughter, 11 & 9, shoot with me sometimes and that is the best of times. My wife thinks I’m “obsessed” with “playing” bows and arrows. And she’s probably right (only I’m not playing! Well, OK, yea I am.) I hope to shoot a turkey this year in the fall. My only hunting experience is from the 80’s when I stalked the ferocious and universally feared Chi-town alley rat. Took him with my Kaibab in a dramatic encounter in Dad’s old warehouse. But that’s a story for another time.
The name Gorbin is from a high school D&D character- a Ranger with a magic longbow and exceptional tracking skills.
My avatar is a crazy wombat I found on one of my late night web crawls- my kids love him.

in reply to: arrow tuning #51243Bruc-
Get a 175 or 200g point out there and you might be surprised. From your original description you are over spined which jives with your recurve at +10 lbs. flying better.

in reply to: Who's going to Compton? #46624I’ll be there with my wife and two kids. We’re staying in St. Joe’s- Compton is for me and my son, the shops, pool & beach are for my wife and daughter! Last year was the first time for us and except for the monsoon it was a great time- even took the opportunity to introduce myself to G. Fred and thank him for his books and video that helped my beginning in this hobby/obsession/money pit 😀
