in reply to: Fair Chase? #63260
Nice one Mike. I had almost the same thing one night pulling our groomer on the local cross-country ski trails. 3 deer came bounding out of the trees in front of me number 3 caught a hoof on the ski of the snowmobile. Good thing the there was not a number 4 or he would have been in my lap. I have had numerous deer cross in front of me while skiing so far the closest encounter has been 10 yards. Now here is my ethics question. If I get one of those old style Finnish ski poles with spear point on the end take a deer with that while on ski’s is that fair chase?:?
in reply to: Something to get your blood pumping.. #58149ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC 😀 You keep that up your going to have neighbors.
in reply to: How many bucks? #52429Minnesota is 1 buck per season. Bonus doe tags are only issued in certain area’s.
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #43680The one thing that I have found is if the gloves have a knit cuff that is snug my hands get cold because it restricts the blood flow to my fingers. And I also want to give a 2 Thumbs up on the Mukluks that Mike recommended.
in reply to: Greetings/Introduction #43660Welcome I am sure you will get some input from others.
1. I would say 2216 for a 40 lb bow is to stiff. I do not a 300 grain tip will soften them enough. I would do something around a 1916.
2. Get a copy of Traditional Bowhunter Magazine and check out the advertisers for wood arrow supplies. There are many here that do wood arrows so when you start come back and ask questions.
in reply to: Traditional Snowshoes for Hunting #39572I have both 2 pair of Green Mountain and 3 pair Ojibwa styles. The Green Mountains advantage is that they are a little shorter without the tail which is handy when you have to step over logs. The Ojibways advantage is the the pointed front parts the brush like the bow of a canoe as opposed to pushing it over like a bulldozer. They also float up and over the deep snow better with the pointed and up turned fronts.
in reply to: Lost Season, Maybe Worse #39518You can’t believe everything a doctor tells you. I shattered my ankle in a tree stand fall 20 years ago next week the Doc told me it would get arthritic and I would be walking with a cane in 10 years due to damage I did on the joint surface. Well I still do not use a cane and no arthritis yet. Oh oh I better find some wood to knock on. Good Luck Don just keep telling yourself “What do them dam Doctors Know anyway” 😉
in reply to: Hot weather clothes #30964Thanks for the tip Jim. But here on the north side of the equator we are going for the 3 layer of wool right now. So keep sending that Merino wool up here.:D
in reply to: Update on Larry Fischer vs The Bastard #16629Truly sad news, my condolences to the Fisher family. He was a gifted man and he shared that with us all here and in the magazine. He will be missed.
in reply to: Elk Hunt – Bad Penetration! #14390MSFK I to want to commend you on your concern and courage to bring this to a public forum. There many here with a much better understanding of the arrow dynamics involved here so will leave part of the equation to them. I just want to say to you that just because you did not recover the animal we know that others did. Nature does not let anything go to waste. If the shot was fatal then the ravens, eagles, coyotes and many others have made use of the kill. You also have gained knowledge from the event that will benefit your and your quarry in the future. Natures lessons do not come cheap and sometimes are painful. In this world no predator is 100% effective but we are the only ones that have a conscience to deal with for what we have done. The others have to deal with the hunger pangs of their stomachs. Good luck on the rest of your season I know that you will succeed in your quest for knowledge. You can walk tall amongst your peers for you have admitted your failure and have set out on the trail to prevent it from happening again
in reply to: Tree Saddle #50135I have a tree climbing belt. I have never used it hunt out of though. I it would very difficult to remain still in my opinion. My legs and back get stiff when moving in the tree doing trimming. Trying to be motionless and quiet with out moving will cause leg cramps.
in reply to: Elkheart radio interview #41575Thanks Mike for the link to the interview. Once again Dave has done us Proud.
in reply to: Eye Glasses for Archery? #26795I just ordered new lenses, they claim to have a improved preifrial correction. I’ll let you know if they as good as advertised in a couple weeks.
in reply to: Binos in Forested Areas #26793I always carry a pair with me. Mine are bigger than most of the ones that have been mentioned so far (I’m Not Bragging8)). I have a old pair of 7 X 42 Bausch & Lomb Discover’s. They are a little heavy but the light gathering ability is top notch. I use the Wensel Brothers Bino strap and they carry just fine.
