in reply to: Treestand Safety #9729
A harness is the only way to go if you want to hunt to old age. I fell when a tree step failed 17 years ago. I shattered my right ankle. I missed landing on a dead oak stem by inches. That would have been the end of my hunting and breathing for ever at age 34. I work electrical construction and have to wear a harness every day when I am in the air. Once you quit worrying about the harness its like wearing pants you just don’t leave home with out them. Better to adjust a strap on the harness than the break on a wheel chair. Remember to use a strap around the tree from the time you start to climb until your feet are back on the ground. If you noticed my handle, now you know the rest of the story.
in reply to: Climbing treestands #51042I was just wondering why you feel that you have to use a climber? My son goes to school at Stevens Point and he uses a hang on Lone Wolf Alpha with hang on Lone Wolf climbing sticks. The law about no screw in steps also only applies to public land so if you are on private land it between you and the land owner.
in reply to: Hunting & Spirituality #46546I make No apologies for spending Sundays outdoors in nature as opposed to in a church. I feel if there is a supreme being that created the world we live in them I should appreciate his creations not mans. If this is a accident of 2 amoeba in the mud so be it. It is awe inspiring to me. But to each his own.
in reply to: Wolf observation. #41844Thanks for the kind words all. I do think that there can be responsible management. But the tone words being used to describe wolf management sound more like they need to be shot on site if they are anywhere people and pets are. From what I have read Montana and Idaho have proposed reasonable plans Wyoming’s on the other hand is more on the order of “No wolves No problem”. Please do not miss understand, there needs to be a balance and we humans have upset the balance with our altering of the landscape. Also Dave have been a member of Back Country Hunter and Anglers for a couple of years now, I believe it is one of a very few groups out there thats membership is made up of “conservationist/sportsman” in the model of Teddy Roosevelt
I have had 2 pair of the Mendel’s made for Cabela’s. They lasted about 3 years for me be fore the leather started to crack wear the soles glue on. I have kept the oiled with Obenhaufs paste and oil. It seems that the glue itself breaks done the leather. The rest of the boot is in excellent condition. I now have a pair of Lowa’s I am hoping I do not have the same issue with them.
in reply to: Should Traditional bowhunting be more mainstream? #48968Yes it should be more main stream. Every hunter should strive to learn woodcraft and be able to identify trees and birds of the forest. They should learn to navigate by land marks. They also should now how to build a fire with just a match and spend the night in the woods with a trap. Instead they will use a GPS to get around and if there is no Pope and Young score for it who cares. Now lets get back to that deer huntin show on the TV at the motel.
in reply to: Boots For The Bold #37120I find that Obenauf’s oil and paste work very well for me. Anything that rides on the surface is going to rub off sooner or later so I want to condition the leather so it doesn’t dry out.
in reply to: Four wheelers… #57344With regard to hauling out a whole deer to meet state laws. I have hauled numerous deer in Minnesota over a mile with the use of a 2 wheeled cart just balance the deer so the weight is over the axle and a 12 year old can do it. There always seems to be those that argue for the handy cap exception. All the handicapped hunters I know only go out with a partner because getting a deer out is not the only issue they have. The main problem is there is a ever growing share of hunters that do not want to sweat or exercise.

in reply to: Bowhunters Prayer #25546I can’t take credit for the words. It was sent to me by a fellow bowhunter he did not know the author.
in reply to: Going to switch to 4 fletch #64078I have been shooting 4-4″ for 10 years now. I started doing it because I could get 2 fletch from every feather. 4-4″ gives 16″ of fletch per arrow. 3-5″ gives 15″ so the arrows should recover a little faster.
in reply to: 4 wheelers, Dave Peterson #41659Dave has been debating this issue with a great degree of self control. And I applaud him. I will say that here in Minnesota we are having the very same issues with ATV abuse, Unfortunately our DNR is supporting it. You see we have 2 of the largest manufactures here in our state and they have spent there money well. Anyone that agrees with Dave should definitely join Back country Hunters and Anglers it is a solid bunch.
