in reply to: A long look at fletching and EFOC #40420
I always try to impress upon our students in our bow hunter Ed. classes that a bent stick can be a bow but a bent stick can not be a arrow. When buying equipment with limited funds.
1. broadhead
2. arrow
3. bow

in reply to: INSTRUCTIONAL DVD??? #24712I second the Master of the Barebow 3. Also if you get a chance take Rod Jenkins class. Well worth the money I paid. Rod well work the form issue first, he can also help with the tuning if that is were the problem lies.
in reply to: A whole new take on ethics #20674It is the faster, bigger and easier mentality. The guys that pay to kill these captive deer believe they are deer hunting and they call themselves sportsman. I’m surprised the Texas Game department did not get orders from above to look the other way. That seems to be the trend in my state.
in reply to: Primitive Spot'n'stalk #8237That is the only kind of hunting video worth watching in my humble opinion. Absolutely Fantastic keep up the good work. Looking forward to a elk video!!!!:D
in reply to: Strap-on tree steps #63164[quote=David Petersen]Hold it — I’m supposed to take tree-climbing advice from a fellow named “Fallguy”? Ho! 😛
I would be suspicious to Dave. I did fall from a tree 16 years ago. I had a single step strap on style twist on me and it slipped into the deep furrow of the bark on an old oak tree. My foot came off and I fell 6′ did a pogo stick landing and shattered my right ankle. 8 screws and a plate to put it back together and 6 months in casts and braces to heal. I can walk now with no aids, my orthopedic surgeon is still amazed. So I have been the designated tree stand safety guy for our bow hunter ed group. Since then it has been a full body harness and a safety line of some type anytime I climb into or set a stand. I can be done it just takes a little time. Time I guess I spent riding the recliner in a cast.:?
in reply to: Strap-on tree steps #61587Dave did you check Gander Mountain they carry Gorilla sticks and usually they sell for 10.00 a stick. I use 3 to get to 12 to 14 feet.
Switch schools. My son just graduated from UW at Stevens Point they have a meat pole on campus to hang and process your deer. They also have a dedicated kitchen in one of the dorm buildings for game processing. They have a designated locker area for firearms, my son has a take down recurve so no one cared if he had that in his dorm room.
in reply to: Off season debate/opinion time #50391I’ll bite, I would say #1 because of the smaller diameter of the arrow shaft there fore less drag. I do believe the difference will be small though. I can’t find the formula to do a kinetic energy calculation I am sure someone get that shortly.
in reply to: Mr Petersen hits one out of the park!!! #48199The North American Wildlife model article. He has put to words my thoughts and feelings of the apathy that is shown by hunters in this country when it come to instant gratification. The “its a free country” and the way I hunt is my business attitude that has over taken hunting and needs to be reined in. I never have under stood the “free country” line 100’s of thousands of people have fought and died for this country. Freedom is not Free. We have the wildlife resources today because of the sacrifices of those that came before us.
in reply to: Improving accuracy #43037If you do not have someone to watch you while you shoot that knows what to look for in your form get a video camera. Pictures do not lie. There are a number of small things that add up to large groups. Also draw weight maybe an issue. I myself shoot 58 to 60 lbs all the time but at our club I am the exception not the rule. I am 5-9 and 180 there are several guys larger than me that shoot 50 to 55 lbs my son included. Good luck:D
in reply to: hunting boots #57271I have the Schnee uninsulated boots that are similar to the Beans. I got them a 4 years ago reason #1 was because of the speed laces #2 I have landed on my butt using the chain tread sole more than once. I like the bob soles of the Schnee’s. They are stiffer so they are not are quiet. But I also use mine canoeing in the Boundary Waters and Quetico wilderness areas and I like the traction I get when I am carrying a canoe & pack.
in reply to: Plaid Shirts #20048Try looking at Bemidji Woolen Mills. They are a 4th generation company from Northern Minnesota. Their Jac Shirt is top notch and coats are fantastic. http://www.bemidjiwoolenmills.com
in reply to: How to ruin a hot spot #26996Unfortunately here in Minnesota our legislators have made them selves the experts on Natural resource issues and in there infinite wisdom decided we did not need a law restricting the heights on permanent tree stands. It used to be 16 feet. They are legal here on state lands. They are considered to be public property so anyone can use no matter who built it. That always works well opening morning with guys and guns. I am just curious if I will see the first 40 footer this season or next.
