Howdy,
Great to see your post. I don’t suffer as you do, nor did I serve in the military, but my hat is off to you in a big way. I read the posts here and you have some great advice. The only thing I would like to add is that I read a book by G. Fred Asbell, called Advanced Instinctive Shooting for Bowhunting. He’s very clear on using a high wrist for a recurve. I stuggled with my recurve because it has this nice fat grip to grab a hold of, so I’m tempted to do so. Fred offers that using a straight wrist, which gives you very little contact with the grip is the right way for a recurve. Obviously, the right way will be the one that works best for you, but it might be worth a try. Wish you all the best! dwc
in reply to: Caroline & David Petersen #34081That photograph tells it all. No shame in sharing pain among friends and in this family here. That arrow head is a beautiful gift. We had a blazing sunset here last night in the East, as fine as we get in these parts. Facing west, we thought of you here. Peace to you. Thank you for being a friend. david

in reply to: The Non-Trad Knife Thread #31182Hi Guys,
I’m sure you all know how painful it is to throw out an old pair of boots, but if they just plain don’t fit anymore, what are you going to do. A friend gave me this old Cattaraugus WWII era fighting knife that belonged to his dad. It needed a new sheath. I made one out of leather, but it ended up a tad too small. I found a small piece of walnut in the shop and sawed it in half, chiseled out the center to fit the knife and glued it back together. I cut up my old Redwings, used the back for the loop, which got epoxied to the wood, then sewed the tongues together to get a piece big enough to cover the rest. I contact cemented and sewed it on. It’s not a pretty sight, but I get to keep my old boots and carry a beauty of a knife to boot… It’s been nicknamed Frankenstein. Best, dwc
in reply to: Caroline & David Petersen #31026Hey Alex,
Great shots and, wow, what a great run. For me, as well, it’s good to exercise the body with a walk in the woods when the soul needs a stretch. I’d have to say a walk or brisk hike is my limit. I never was much of a runner. My “style” as it were is way to harsh on my frame.
Good luck this turkey season. I’ll try to get out a little bit this year as time permits. It’s a great time in the woods.
I look forward to seeing more photos of you even closer to the bird. best, david

in reply to: Caroline & David Petersen #30271T & Steve,
Thanks for your posts. They are so deeply heartfelt. I will always remember the first time I read about Dave and felt that here is someone who can put into words how I feel about the woods. With more reading I come to understand that it’s not just Dave, but his family as well, his wife, that supports his truth and his vision to make it heard. I am grateful to them both. Some part of all of us is heart broken now. I wish peace to Dave and Caroline and to all of you who share a part of that pain.
Alex, I also want to add that I can tell from the readings that Dave and Caroline hold a special place in their hearts for you. You have been a great friend to them.
peace, david

in reply to: "The Good Hunt" film update #29034I’ve been looking forward to this film since it was announced. I’ll be putting that on my Santa list for sure. There is an amazing amount of talent on the roles of this site with Alex and his music, Dave, Smithhammer, the writers, Clay the film maker. Those are just the few I know about and that does not even include the makers of bows and arrows. It’s a fine crowd to be tapped into. All the best, david
