in reply to: Winter Rove #62349
Got out for a short snowshoe this afternoon. Heavy crust, punching through into knee deep snow. Lots of deer sign in my “neighborhood,” including a couple of deer. Did some stumping for the first time in a couple of weeks and actually shot fairly well. I had one shot when I pulled back I felt my ring finger out of place on the string. I thought, I’ll just work through this. Man, that one went all wrong! At least with the crust on the snow, the arrow was easy to find.
A short walk, but a good one.

in reply to: "Backcountry" Monthly Article #62084I just finished E. Donnel’s river crossing article. Great stuff. I once camped in the Painted Desert. After setting up the tent on a little dome of a rise, the highest spot I could find. We hiked for a few hours up the dry wash. That night, after viewing one of the most incredible starry skies I ever saw, two electric storms passed through. That was very exciting to say the least. I kept looking up at the aluminum tent poles silhouetted against the electric sky. The next day we packed up all the gear and twice the weight in mud to find we had a 100 yard or so river crossing to do that wasn’t there the day before. We walked downstream until the channel widened and the speed of the current slacked off and were able to cross somewhat nervously, but safely. Sometimes things change and sometimes in a hurry. I look forward to next month’s addition to the Backcountry articles. best, dwc
in reply to: Hickory Bow #62035Paleo, feel free to bring that post back up front. Love to see the bow. Thanks. Dc
in reply to: Signs of Spring #61966We had a couple robins here about three weeks ago but I haven’t seen them since. There’s a few places nearby where I can see bluebirds all year round. Robins will sometimes winter over in the swamps if it doesn’t freeze too hard. Dc

in reply to: Homemade handiwork #61180I’ve made a couple of string keepers, but nothing fancy. This sheath was the most fun so far. I put a piece of walnut inside and covered it with the tongues from an old pair of boots. dwc
in reply to: Let me introduce myself #61133Drew4, welcome! Reads like you have plenty of perspective to draw on, or drew on rather. I look forward to reading your posts and responces. Best wishes with your studies. Peace, dwc
in reply to: Two Tracks String Scallops #58819Grumpy,when’s the last time you had your ears checked!?!
I have them on my longbow and they work great. Truth be told, I had whiskers on it, too, and they were fine. If I’m in good form and into my back right, i get no noise. If I’m getting sloppy, I get noise. But I like em. I call them string slugs, since I’m inland. Dc
in reply to: Cross-Dominance and Instinctive #58775This guy Kavanaugh is an excellent teacher/coach and an excellent shot. I really enjoy his videos. I only found him about a year ago. What he says about shooting is worth listening to.
Another neat thing about him, and George Stout by the way, is he shoots factory bows. Impeccable form and tuning.
Anybody else out there practice archery on their hockey rink?
Best, dwc
in reply to: Duiker quiver #57576If I were you, I’d order a replacement foam and double it up. It really helps to seat the broadheads firmly down in the foam and position them so that when the quiver is vertical the arrows stand a part, as best you can. give it a try. best, dwc

in reply to: Fight the fat-cat land grabbers #56535It’s no mystery that it’s all about money. Here’s a link to a story in the NY Times. This is the stuff that makes it hard to remain optimistic. I so appreciate the fighters in this fight.
January 21, 2010 WASHINGTON — Overruling two important precedents about the First Amendment rights of corporations, a bitterly divided Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the government may not ban political spending by corporations in candidate elections.
