in reply to: outdoors/backwoodsman Class #15060Sounds like a great time. Love that Lakota phrase. That’s a great beginning, middle and end. All the best to you, dwc
in reply to: Going Cuckoo #14879Steve, just read something that folk names for the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo in the south are Rain Crow and Storm Crow for their habit of calling on hot afternoons, often before a change in the weather. Neat. dwc
in reply to: Going Cuckoo #14838The Mourning Dove was an easy one for me because they were cooing outside my window everyday as a kid. I always thought they were a town bird, because I lived just outside of town, but we have them here out in the woods, too. Heard a few this morning. Thanks for sharing that link. It really shows how they breath when they call. best, dwc

in reply to: Grilling Game Meat #12987Paleo,
I love to grill venison. The best things for me at the tenderloins, of course. Go for rare and remember that meat continues to cook when it’s off the fire. I like to start off with a real hot grill, lay the meat on and pretty soon after, flip it and turn the heat down. I’m cooking on propane, so I grill the meat near the front and I turn the heat down by turning the front burners either off or on low and turning up the back burner. My grill also is hotter on the right than the left, so that helps me regulate the cooking. I also try to get everything and everyone to the table before the meat comes off.
I generally use a simple Italian dressing or oil and vinegar to marinate the meat.
Don’t walk too far and forget about it. When things start to cook, it can happen quickly.
Have fun! best, dwc
in reply to: board bow build question #12827Steve, on your recommendation I checked out http://www.boyersedge.com. That guy’s a hoot. I didn’t even get to the archery part, just his words of wisdom. Well worth the look. Thanks! Dwc
in reply to: outdoors/backwoodsman Class #12752Another nod toward practical orienteering. As an old Eagle Scout and woodsman of eastern Pa where roads and streams are very plentiful, I still have to think hard when out of my element. Orienteering, as stated above, can be hard to wrap your head around for some. I think it’s best to start the concepts early. You have a great opportunity and so will your students. Enjoy! Dwc

in reply to: Ground Game #56999I have not hunted in a commercial ground blind, but it does not seem at all appealing. They just look like they limit the view too much, while a natural blind affords a much better view of the surroundings. It also seems like a step away from the whole trad idea, especially with a heater. That said, when I was a kid, my dad built a little charcoal heater for me to help me stay warm. I wasn’t in a blind, just standing with my rifle in the snow next to a tree.
You might want to go to a store that has a blind set up and take your bow inside to see if you have room to maneuver. You might just like it. best of luck, dwc
in reply to: The War of Arrows…. Great movie! #56547It’s worth the look. I saw it twice now. Thanks, d
