in reply to: Deer Calls? Or Just Blowing Hot Air! #55582I watched a couple of youtube videos in the wee hours this morning and wanted to refresh this old thread to see if there are any fresh thoughts on the subject.
I haven’t tried a call or rattle het this year but I probably will at some point just for kicks. Dwc

in reply to: Shooting Gloves #26772The new glove arrived and it fits fine. The guys at 3Rivers were kind enough to try on a few to find one that was a little bigger. Great customer service. Best, dwc
in reply to: Personal conservation #53775Sumner,
Good thoughts. There are usually inconsistencies when regulating game in a state wide or regional way. Where I live and hunt there are fewer deer per square mile in the woods than in the residential developments. On the other hand, often the bigger deer with nicer racks are in areas where there are fewer deer and more food source. It’s not necessarily about genetics. The higher concentration areas probably should be hunted harder, but the stands of woods are small and not everybody wants to hunt around barking dogs and car doors slamming.
One of the problems of having the hunting population control itself without police power oversight is having people not cooperate. Afterall, we wouldn’t need laws if everyone was considerate of their neighbors.
Thanks for your post. Dwc
in reply to: Good bow holder for treestand #53713Oak,
I wonder about the same thing. I often think of making one that the tip of the bow can stand in. My hearing is not the best and often when I see deer it’s already close, so I want to minimize movement as much as possible. That said, I don’t sit, I stand, and I hold the bow with the tip either in a leather cuff I’ve sewn into my pants or tucked into the top of my boot, ready to go. If you find something, please post it. thanks, dwc
in reply to: minimizing the stuff we carry #51498After about twenty years of handy service one of my favorite tools snapped into pieces. I carry one of those cheap Sierra Saws in my pack or bag and use it for trimming limbs, cutting campfire wood or bones. I’ve replaced the blade a couple of times but the plastic handle got brittle and snapped at the blade. Holding just the blade, I could still get what I needed to done while setting up a stand this afternoon. Bought a replacement for less than twelve bucks.
in reply to: filled buck tag #49057Wow! Very nice deer. Great hunt. Congratulations! best, dwc
in reply to: Shooting Gloves #48274After about four years of use my Duraglove start to split along side the index finger, so I ordered another one, same size. The glove has been improved with longer nylon stalls for deep hook shooters. The glove I received was painfully tight as the stalls were really narrow. In typical 3Rivers fashion they took the return after letting me try it out. Then they opened a few gloves to find a glove with more finger room. I’m still waiting for the glove as it was just shipped today, but am optimistic. I just have to applaud their customer service once again. Excellent customer service seems to be pretty common in the trad world. ➡

in reply to: Feather straightening tip #48257That’s a great tip. Hope mom picks it up for the tip of the month. Someone needs to video you doing the selfies for that column!
in reply to: Getting in shape #48167I second again the bowfit. I have a heavy band on the rig and bought a second, medium band that I use for the other exercises other than a bow style pull back. Best thing going. I try to squeeze in a few push ups and put a pull up bar (recycled shovel handle) in the studio door for kicks. Beats the gym for me. Dwc
