Thank you, amigos. dwc
That’s a great painting. Dwc
in reply to: Blood Trails #34565Yesterday afternoon I killed my second deer with a bow. It was a button buck that came through two hours before the season ended. Amazingly, at about 8 yards I managed to hit him a bit far back, as he took a step as I was releasing. My bad. I can normally hit a golf ball at that range. The seeming lack of effort it took the arrow to disappear into the deer was sort of a surprise. It just seemed to melt in.
I braced myself for a long search, took most of my gear back to my car and came back for a slow track. The blood was not heavy, but unmistakable, with a splatter every few feet. I found him in less than 60 yards over the edge of a small hill, just out of sight.
When I butchered I found a neat hole in the liver. I am very grateful that the broadhead worked so well, the deer didn’t suffer long and I found him in short order. It was quite a relief. Dwc
in reply to: My beautiful NY buck #12434Alex, nice job with the mount. That’s a hunt to remember. Great approach to solving problems from choosing your bow to choosing your stand. Congratulations! Dwc
in reply to: Just checking in… #9363Dave,
Great to read your post. I truly appreciate your position at work. I’m self-employed but ready to lay myself off if I don’t get things rolling! My season is also limited. Between work and spending time with my family, getting kids ready for school and all, which is a great pleasure for me, my time in the woods is not a lot. But whatever minutes and hours I get, I really enjoy. Had one spike buck close enough for a shot, but they’re not legal. It was still exciting to play it out and be only 20 feet away from him. I have tomorrow and the early season ends. I expect to hunt with my bow during the rifle season, too, as I did last year. I have one deer in the freezer, a combined gift of the giving universe and the Chrysler corporation.
Stay on track and the woods will continue to provide adventure!
All the best to you, david
in reply to: Traditional Question #59104I just read some of the thread on the other site and I think I’ll stay right here, not that things can’t get heated now and then.
Sights or no sights, enjoy yourself. I really appreciate that you want to be accurate especially when hunting. The animal is making a sacrifice, involuntarily, so it’s truly our obligation to be empathetic to that aspect. Best, dwc
in reply to: Ducks, Politics and Money #58705Thanks for the link to the NYTimes article. It’s great to get some press on the issue. I think Don has legs to stand on and DU’s argument is pretty hollow. If they didn’t like it, I could imagine a phone call to say geez Don ease up, but firing? Definitely babysitting the money.
in reply to: Special Day #55302Here’s a link to the film that was shown during the Veterans Day event. All the best, David
in reply to: Ducks, Politics and Money #49859Don, my best wishes to you. The uphill fight seems to get steeper all the time. I sent an email to Mr. Young with the address Alex provided. I asked for his side of the story, as I’m always curious to the other side of the coin. I’m also curious to hear how folks might justify kneeing,or bending over, if that be the case. The dollar is powerful and I have tremendous respect to those who are willing to stand by their convictions in times when that power is used in ways that help only the few maintain their stations in life at the expense of others.
Cheers to you, Don. I think we are fortunate to have you.
best, david
Be sure to get an outfitter who has good referrals. A local fellow here went to North Carolina to hunt hogs and when he got there the outfitter claimed some mistake was made as there were no hogs in that region. They ended up with a nice whitetail hunt, but it was not what they expected. Let us know the details as you go. thanks, dwc
in reply to: Special Day #49727Yes, a big thank you! I covered a Veterans Day event this afternoon and it was very touching to see the men and women together. A female retired Army general spoke and showed a very moving short film about veterans. I’ll post a link if I can get it. I appreciate those who responded to their call to duty. All the best to you, david

in reply to: Personal conservation #24820Wojo,
I’ve been a wait and see guy on the PA Game Commissions decision to cut down the herd and implement antler restrictions. I was one of the guys, pre-archery, who was taking three or four deer a year with my flintlock and .270. I saw the local herd drop dramatically and was starting to wonder what I had participated in. But now, the deer herd is in great shape with larger healthier deer. I’m seeing lots of buck and plenty with large racks. I’m no trophy hunter, but the last two bucks I shot were freezer fillers. It’s been a win-win in my view, especially since the woods are in much better shape than they were before. I’m also seeing more grouse and rabbits around that I did 10 years ago.
I know in Western PA, it’s four on one side, as opposed to three in the East. That might make a difference. I have to say, it’s good to see the bucks grow up, as well as the does. Thanks, dwc
in reply to: My beautiful NY buck #24769That’s some sweet music, Alex! Congratulations on a beauty and a creative approach to your good hunt. best, dwc
