in reply to: Orange Day in PA #57817
So I woke up this morning and checked my email to find a reminder from a friend. The first week in my WMU is Antlered Deer only. Yikes! I forgot about that. Had I been able to shoot that doe yesterday, I would have found myself in an embarrassing situation. It’s bad enough that I forgot, but I’m really glad she caught me and walked away. I usually make it a point to review the rules before the season opens. I did that when I first bought my tags, but truly needed a refresher. Some days unlucky is the best luck to have. best, dwc

in reply to: Happy Thanksgiving #57629Your a good uncle, taking extra ammo to the city. You might want to get them a little hibachi so they can roast their squirrels out on the front stoop. Have a great one!
True enough that’s a big job for one word, Steve. I also find a lot of contradictions when I hear an anti hunter, especially if that person is eating a store bought burger. In some cases it’s due to a prior experience that turned their stomach. Seeing a deer with an arrow in it’s rump walking through their backyard did it for one friend. But that’s sort of another part of the puzzle. As a whole we’ve been gently guided away from the cycle of life in which one thing dies and another eats and we all get out turn. It’s a shame that hunting and eating are so far removed from one another to so many of us. Kill should mean eat, with few exceptions. Hunting became sport and sport means win and win means trophy. I’m grateful for our tradbow community here, where the experience is the real prize and a buck or a doe or a groundhog can be celebrated. All the best to you! Dwc

in reply to: Things That Happen Out There #48570On a boy scout canoe trip we ran a rapid called Skinners Falls on the upper Delaware. One of the canoes flipped and capped on a rock in the middle of the rapids. No one was hurt, but the canoe was stranded. I grabbed a rope and ran upstream, jumped in the river to float down to the canoe. Dang if the rope didn’t float and swarm all around. I missed the canoe by a foot, but the rope caught between the canoe and the rock and wrapped around one of my ankles. The current the rope tight with me head downstream underwater. I’ll always remember how beautiful, peaceful, serene it seemed under there with all the bubbles swarming around me. At some point, probably a lot quicker than I remember, it occurred that I needed to get up on the canoe to get some air. I was able to reach up and not get a hold of much, but a hand grabbed me and helped me up. To this day I don’t remember who that was, but I’m very grateful to a hand when I really needed it. dwc
in reply to: Happy Thanksgiving #48473Paleo, Enjoy the hunt and enjoy Thanksgiving! Rifle season starts here in PA Monday. I’ll stick with the bow for most of it and maybe take Dad’s rifle for a walk one day, too. Enjoy the ol stomping grounds. dwc

in reply to: Hunting 2016 #47993I tried rattling and grunting with no success. I think I could use some lessons on that. The sun went down on the early season yesterday. This morning a nice doe came through the backyard with a big eight point close behind. A beautiful sight. Rifle season comes in the Monday after thanksgiving. I expect to be back out with bow in hand, although I might pick up the flintlock a time or two. Good luck to all of you! Dwc

in reply to: Dean Torges goes to the Happy Hunting Ground #39105Steve, thank you for this post. I only got to know Dean through his blog, which was always enjoyable and informative. I hope his words remain available for a long time. I wish I would have known him personally. He seems to have lived a life that was extraordinary.
One evening on a drive, I listened to this Fresh Air interview with Leonard Cohen. Great stuff. Amazing artist.
All the best to you all. peace, dwc
Amen to that. I just photographed a veterans luncheon at a local company. While I’m not a vet, it was great to see these men and women greet each other with smiles. There were a few war stories, but mostly talk about what they are up to now. Nice event. All the best to you vets. dwc
