in reply to: Finger pain #126419
Steve, I have a small callus on my ring finger. That finger was getting tender and that’s why I switched to a heavier glove. I shot a few arrows this morning. With the lighter Duraglove, which feels really thin now, I can bend my fingers into a deep hook and use all three fingers more evenly. With the heavier glove I now see how I’m not curling my fingers around the string.
I’ll be doing some blank bale for awhile now focusing on my string fingers.
thanks your four help! Happy Fourth,
dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #126412Col Mike, that sounds like a great trip. I would’ve love to sit and listen around that campfire. I have ETAR in the calendar. Best case for me will be an early run on Saturday for the day. I’m booked that Thursday and Friday and so far still off on Saturday. It would be great to get a few handshakes in and put some faces on these handles. All the best to ya, dwc
in reply to: Very light bows #126411smiley, that’s testament to your set up, practice and knowledge of your abilities, which includes how close you need to be to make that confident, ethical shot. You and your brother did the work and received the rewards. Congratulations and thanks for sharing what you’ve learned. Best, dwc
in reply to: Finger pain #126410I picked Archery Anatomy off the shelf and found the section on drawing hand and proper string location. I see the recommendation for settling the load in the first and third fingers before the middle finger. Seems that I saw or read somewhere that the load is on the joint of first two fingers and the pad of the third. I think that’s what I do and is why the pad of the third or ring finger is sometimes sore and callused. Thanks for the tip and reminding me of that book. Good stuff. Best, dwc
in reply to: Finger pain #126404Hi Steve, I figured you would have an idea for me. Thank you very much. I’m going to give the finger a couple days. My chiropractor did some work on the finger and my forearm. He suggested that I should increase fluid intake as joints can suffer due to dehydration. What he did has offered some relief. I also discussed that I switched from a thin Duraglove to a heavier StickTight glove. With the heavier glove I get more protection but can’t curl my fingers as in as much of a hook. Perhaps there some extra leverage or pressure when I can’t curl my fingers. He suggested alternating gloves to see if that helps. I’ll definitely try what you have recommended. I appreciate your help. Thanks! David
in reply to: Newbie traditional archery bow question/help. #126358All great advice here. Check out the Bodnik bows. I bought one for my wife a few years ago and it’s very nice. Real smooth and was a good deal.
Prepare for the roller coaster ride and enjoy it. Often, as was the case for me, the first couple times out I couldn’t miss. Then I started paying attention to what I was doing and I couldn’t hit a thing. The good news is, as archers, we just love to shoot. Keep it fun. Like Steve said, find a buddy and go stumpin. Good medicine. Best, dwc
in reply to: Arrow set-up suggestions? #126180Hi Sean, because I’m relatively new at bow hunting I opted to follow the Ashby guides. I ended up with about 630 gr total with 350 up front including the insert. There are a lot of opinions about all this but I wanted to build in as much advantage as I could, knowing my ranges would be kept short. I get really good arrow flight and I’ve had excellent penetration in the few deer I killed. None went more than about 40 yards. I’m using Tuffheads and couldn’t be happier with them. My bow is a 46 # longbow and the shafts are Beman Bowhunter 400s. I have my target arrows and stumping arrows all matched to my hunting arrows.
There’s also a thread here where members have listed there set ups and that might be of interest to you. Enjoy, dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #125996Thanks, Steve. I’ve had issues loading the site on my computer and phone. Something with the server/connection. I have to turn the wifi off on my phone to get on. Then a lot of the time the tip of the month screen pops up uncontrolably and I just get frustrated. I guess it keeps me working instead of playing!
All good here. Shooting almost every day, getting ready for hunting as always. It’s time to get this years license again and fill out the forms for doe permits. Another trip around the sun! Dwc
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #125991Steve, enjoy that class with John Schultz. I found his videos online a few years ago and they were entertaining as well as very inspiring. This is a great opportunity for you. Perhaps you’ll write a piece to share with us. All the best , david
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #125892That’s a pretty pup! Congratulations! All the best to you, David
in reply to: Fine Tuning #125155Hi Guys, been off the radar for a bit. Something in the technology that has kept me from signing on. Still got my wiggles. It might be release related. It’s better when I push my elbow back for back tension, a la Clay Hayes video. Doesn’t keep me from having fun! Thanks for all the suggestions.
Grumpy, hows the muffin business? I got to keep after it more than I ever have. I’m lucky to have a great cook in the house who is also very conscious of our diets. Had a great salad the other days with little bits of grill venison tenderloin. Mmmm. dwc
in reply to: A hog hunting tale #125154Preston, good story! Thanks, David
Grumps, what Mr Warren said is echoed by my hunting buddy. He has said the same about the two hickorys. He’s been using a selfbow made out of pig nut (smooth bark) hickory for years. We’ve been hunting together for 8 years or so and he’s had that same bow longer than that. He tags out every year with it, too. He’s a good archer and a better hunter. dwc
in reply to: Book Suggestions #125152Fast becoming one of my favorites is The Island Within, by Richard Nelson. I’m reading it slowly, savoring every line. I got that idea in that thread, I think. Also started From Here to Eternity, although it’s not a trad book. Thin Red Line is my all time favorite book and movie. A scene in the older version of the movie shows thousands of fruit bats flying out of the jungle. It’s worth seeing it just for that. The newer version gives homage to that, but with only one bat. Times…
It’s time to get out the reference books now, with Spring here, and freshen up on wild flowers and ferns.
best, dwc
in reply to: My new baby #125151Hi Alex, I’ve been gone for a while, too. Locked out by some mysterious technology. Are you going to Whittingham this year? I have it on the calendar for Friday. Work often interferes, but I’m going to try to get there for a few hours this year. All the best, David
