I find that the Carbons seem to hold up better for stumping, especially heavier / collared ones, though nothing lasts a long time in my part of the SW{rocks }. Check them good after each use! I find carbons can be damaged but unless you flex them, you might not notice. With Aluminum it is usually obvious when they are done.

Thanks for your answer. I’m in the PA northeast and have a lot of old stump, which can be surprisingly hard. Most of my problems come from glancing strikes that send the aluminum sideways into another tree. That’s a tomato stake maker.

        Hi Guys,
Another question. The main reason I want to switch from aluminum to carbon arrows is to get more stumping life out of my arrows. The EFOC aspect matters, but I want arrows that will take a beating.
The question is… is there a direct relationship to shaft weight and durability. Lighter shaft weight can help with the EFOC, but will a heavier arrow last longer in stumping? Thanks, dwc

Thanks again, all. There’s plenty to digest and definitely plenty of work to do…. fun work. More questions to follow for sure. peace, dwc

Thanks for your tip. The certificate is actually with 3Rivers. I will check the local shop to see if they carry the flat liners.
BTW, Ed mentioned GT ultralights, but when I looked those up I found quite a variety. Any in particular, just in case? thanks, d

Thank you for all of this. I have to figure a way to bookmark this page for future reference. I’m probably going with a Carbon Express as I have a gift certificate with a place that sells the CE, but does not sell the GTs. This might sound trivial, but money is tight these days! Whitetails are the primary quarry I’m preparing for. Elk are a long way off in more than one regard.
This is very valuable for me. Thank you much!

I’d like to jump in on this thread from the question aspect. What carbon shafts do you guys like? I’m bending my alums too much, so I’m thinking of going carbon to save in the long run. I appreciate all the info you guys can spare. Thanks, dwc

To throw my two cents in, I’m shooting a 46# longbow with 2016s at about 28.5 inches. I’m shooting 130 grain heads, with aluminum inserts, but 75 grain steel adapters and getting really nice flight. My efoc is about 20%. I am strongly thinking about switching to carbons as my pile of bent aluminum shafts keep getting bigger…

Make sure you take plenty of photos of the whole process. I’d love to see how you put this together. dwc

in reply to: FastFlight Strings #23335

I got a new longbow this winter, which moved me to a fast flight string. The nocks are looser if your nocks are adjusted to the old string. The arrow falling off the shelf might be another problem, though, which I had, too. There was a link posted a while back to an excellent short video on youtube.com that addressed that issue.
Type in the word shelf in the search box and look for the link to the Arrow Swinging Off the Shelf thread. Scroll down to the video. It was a help to me.

I had to look up those shots. The smiles tell the stories. Congratulations!

I suppose that I was slamming Cabela’s. I shouldn’t single them out, as it’s hard to find things Made in USA pretty much anywhere. I don’t have anything against the Chinese people either, or any other nationality, race, religion, etc… Their politicians are probably just like ours, just trying to get theirs while they can. I’ve been around a little bit and am pretty sure that your average person on the street in any country, in any part of the world, is pretty much like me. I’m just trying to make a living and see my kids off the best way I can. My aim at the big box is just lamenting the fact that so many jobs and so much of our money is overseas. What we get in return is often of low quality. Our options are few these days.
I would imagine that the growing interest in traditional archery is way to get away from the technology that we are surrounded by all day, the necessary and the unneeded. The values that we speak of are a way to get back a little sanity that we seem to be losing in other arenas.
I should add that I’m no purest. I have purchased items from the big C and others, after finding out that I couldn’t get it at the local store. For my archery gear, I’ll stick with the places you find on this site and what I can get from craftsmen that I meet.

Amen to supporting the Moms & Pops of the world. Many of us are in business for ourselves, too, and depend on the local support. I’m getting back into this archery after many years away and I’ve been able to get a lot of guidance, not only from this site, but from the business that advertise here. I owe them many thanks, especially Three Rivers, and my continued business.
On a related note. When the Big C opened a store in central PA I thought I’d take a ride out there. My son, still in a stroller at the time, really loved the stuffed animals and the aquariums. That’s all cool, but the fun stopped there. I looked long and hard to find a product that was made on these shores and found darn little. You would think that at a flag wavers’ paradise like this is supposed to be, that you would find a little bit of the stars and stripes on some of the products. No such luck.

Are you using a can for the fawn bleat? After, of course the early wake up grunts, snorts and wheezes…

in reply to: Quiver options #18293

I have a Safari Tuff and I like it a lot. The way they have the pocket located at the top of the quiver throws it out of balance, though, if you put much in it. I tried a bottle of water in that pocket and it was very awkward. I think they could place the same pocket at the bottom around the backside of the quiver and the extra weight would be more manageable. I also take the top cover off when the weather is good, as it sticks up and catches on limbs. That said, I think it’s a pretty decent quiver and works quite well overall.
