in reply to: First Arrow Purchase Suggestions #57235
Hey,
Good times ahead! I’m shooting a 46#, which with my draw is probably about 43 or so. I started with wood, but saw I was much more consistent with aluminum, so I switched. I could get them cheap on the auction site, but I was bending them up like crazy. I like to stump a lot and a side swipe against a tree with an aluminum shaft makes it a tomato stake. I ended up switching to Beman bowhunters, which are about the cheapest shaft out there. I think you might find a better shaft, like the Whitetails, but these are dang good. I’m sure they’re a better shaft than I am an archer. I’m using 400 shafts with a 50 grain insert, 225 grain tuffheads and 75 grain adapters and they fly nice. These shafts have been pretty easy to tune I think. Best of luck, dwc
ps. My shafts with the tuffheads come in about 625 grains and about 28% foc. For stumping, I put a 125 gr. adapter in the judo and the total weight is about 605ish so my stumper is real close to the hunting arrow. dwc

Anything with a string on it! Look up George on youtube and check out him playing his Gretsch Pro Jet Guitar. Very nice. beauty, dwc
in reply to: @ George D. Stout #53793Thanks! I was using his full name and only coming up with country music, not that there’s anything wrong with that.. much appreciated, dwc

in reply to: Quiver identification #51910I have one of those quivers with the Bear logo pressed into the pocket. Great quiver. It does look a little different than the one at Cabelas. Mine is a finished leather, tan, two tone. This is probably just a newer version.
My parents bought mine for me at a yard sale in the late 70 or early 80s. I don’t use it for hunting, but do use it for 3D shoots. dwc
in reply to: Traditional Equipment #51334Sounds like a nice course. I know of a local coach who has sent his high school team to championships, but turns to the compound bow for hunting. To each his own, as long as the ethics are in place, which I’m sure of with this particular fellow. dwc
in reply to: Book Recommendation #50863Yep, Dave’s books are way high on the list. I read a few of Capstick’s and enjoyed them. Ruark’s Uhuru is absolutely amazing, if going off track a bit from hunting. You gotta read his Old Man and a Boy series, as well as Hemingway’s Nick Adams stories. One of my favorites is The Greatest Hunting Stories Ever Told, edited by Lamar Underwood. It’s not archery, but there are some beautiful stories. Including one that rivals Jack London’s To Build a Fire.
I love short stories and essays, which is why I’ve enjoyed Dave’s collections so much. The first time I read Dave’s interview in the Sun, I really felt I had found someone who could put into words how I felt in my heart.
Here’s to those who know how to use a pen. Cheers. dwc

Is there a place where all your videos are kept, such as youtube.com? Thank you, dwc
in reply to: Will and his new recurve (thanks Troy and Ben) #47136That smile has got to be one big pay off. Ain’t it the best! dwc
in reply to: "scary sharp" – a how to video #38693Clay,
I enjoyed your video, so I took a look at your website. Very nice. Good, clear, instructions. I’m starting one of your articles now, too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. dwc
in reply to: @ George D. Stout #36848I should have made my handle Two Cents, because that’s about what I have to comment on most of these issues. I have to say I shoot much more consistently when I get a good solid grip on my longbow. Most of the pressure is in the web with a bit on the heel of my hand, but a good firm grip. Two pennies.
That said, as I’m still a student of shooting, Mr. Stout’s lessons have been very valuable. I’ve watched his videos over and over and they have certainly made me a better shot. I’d love to have a real lesson with him someday. Mr. Stout, thank you for your contributions.
best, dwc
in reply to: 15 to 30 yards, 48# Recurve. #35150Great videos, but first, great shooting! George, I’m getting a sense of something here. You said some guys say a bow with an elevated rest can’t be shot canted. Well, they are probably right. Just because you can do it doesn’t make it possible, but I do appreciate your optimism.
in reply to: Hand shock or "damn my elbows hurt"!! #14810My first step is to visit my chiropractor who is specializes in athletics. He usually tells me that I’m not exercising enough. The theory is that you need to work your muscles harder in training than you do out in the world, be it shooting the bow or splitting wood. I’m using a bowfit for a few years now and it works really well. That said, it works well when I work it well.
in reply to: Scouting and 'Shed' Hunting 8/11/12 #14096What kind of snake is that? Big one. Nice shot.
in reply to: Re-using Fletching #14069I’ve used a sharp knife to take off fletching plenty of times. I reuse the feathers on stumping arrows and have never noticed a difference. They might not look quite as pretty and they might have a little bit of torque in them, but they fly just fine.
I tape my feathers on and that might help in getting them off. good luck, dwc
