Great vacation photo! Tradition is all about values. All the best, dwc

in reply to: ''The Hammer '' small game blunt #40158After reading this thread, I decided to glue up a hex head that I used when shooting aluminum shafts. I only stumped with it once then because the third shot gave me a smashed shaft. The head didn’t penetrate enough to let the target absorb some of the shock. Now my arrows are carbon shafts with an aluminum collar. I’ve been shooting this hex head for a few days now and still cringe when the arrow bounces back at me off some immobile target, but not damage as far as I can tell. I find myself adjusting my pick of targets a bit to things that will give a little bit. I would imagine these things would pack quite a punch on small game. dwcphoto
in reply to: Elkheart arrived! #39268That’s very beautiful. I love that dark wood. Congratulations on your acquisition! dwcphoto
in reply to: What broadheads do you like? #39262I’ll put my two-cents in for TuffHead. I only killed one deer, a small doe, but it did what it was supposed to do. I’ve done lots of target practice with the head and it flies really nice. dwcphoto
in reply to: Favorite Traditional Web Searches #36974Yes, youtube is full of helpful stuff. It can also be entertaining just to start somewhere and see how fast it all falls apart into the idiots’ abyss. One time I was doing a traditional archery search and after clicking about three or four of their video suggestions I ended up with nascar style garden tractor racing. Now that’s entertainment.
I also want to add my bowyer’s site, http://www.stewartsarchery.com .
Aside from archery, my favorite website for information is http://www.wheelhorseforum.com , Red Square. I have an old WH 518 that was beat up when I bought it in 96 and it’s still going…
When I was first getting into archery I spent a lot of time (and money) at 3Rivers. Excellent site with lots of great reviews to help learn what other folks are doing. best, dwc
in reply to: what quivers do you prefer? #33778Do you have a picture of that? thanks , dwc
in reply to: what quivers do you prefer? #29892I’ve been using a Safari Tought quiver since I started a few years ago. It’s been good. It has a D ring to hang in the tree, so I can position a hanger to put it right where I want it.
When I picked up my Stewart Slammer I asked Leon for his recommendation and he said simply, Carrying arrows is a pain in the butt, so just find what works the best for you.

in reply to: Wonderful News! #29161Congratulations! It’s just the best. Yes, time will be tough for a while, but you’ll figure it out. I learned to catch up on work in the studio and to get “my time” when everyone else is sleeping. It’s really just the best thing ever. Best wishes for a healthy family! dwc
in reply to: Staining a pattern #25090I don’t have a lot of experience with staining, aside from my best shirts. One thing that helped me on some trim work we’re doing is a light sanding to break the finish first. It made a difference, but that was pine. Have fun with the new bow. dwc
in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #25038Jim,
I only read the last one and it’s a great help. I had the same question and I’d like to read the first two at some point. It helped me a lot and I still go back to it at times. dwc
in reply to: ''The Hammer '' small game blunt #21665While I don’t think the judo would be the best small game head, I’ll stick with it for stumping. The hex heads don’t penetrate and that shock goes right into the shaft resulting in a break. I get good service out of the judos. The wires do eventually break and once you are down to two or one, they’ll really start to slide. I usually get a few months out of one. I generally only carry one at a time. Shooting two at a target increased my odds of a loss, so I stick to one and then go get it. dwc
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #21611I’m with you. I also have a Case scout knife that I bought at a yard sale years ago for $5. I sent that in and they cleaned it up nice and polished. Short of collecting, these things are so well made that you really don’t need to buy any more. dwc
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #21586Thanks, guys. That KaBar only comes out of the safe for special showings, otherwise it sits on top of my Granddad’s whet stone. I also have a gravity knife, a sailor’s knife I think, that my dad liberated when he was transporting prisoners off the line.
I love that Queen. I have an older trapper model that I always thought was too long to fit in my pocket comfortable. Case and Queen knives are still made in Pennsylvania.
That case in my post was yard sale score with blades worn to the nubs. I sent it back to Case and they fitted new blades and cleaned it up like new. I forgot that I didn’t post that photo… I’ll do it here.
Smithy, don’t you know that booze and sharp tools don’t mix… 😉

in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #21109The last one I’ll show is my Dad’s KaBar he carried during WWII, in England, Africa, France, and Germany, and while he ferried troops in his truck during the Battle of the Bulge. Yep, this one’s precious. Thanks for looking, dwcphoto
