in reply to: Grizzly hunt! #8260
In the movie “Buck”, a woman tells the story of a pirate captain. The man in the crows nest calls down to report an enemy ship on the horizon. The captain yells for his red shirt, claiming if he’s wounded his crew won’t notice and will fight on. A little while after a ferocious battle has ended a call from the crow’s nest reports ten enemy ships on the horizon. The pirate captain yells, “Bring me my brown pants!”
That’d be me hunting grizzly. dwc
in reply to: My Elkheart has arrived!! #8244Alex,
I just took another look at those photos. It’s really nice. You should drop it off here to have it professionally photographed. I’m sure I can get it back to you by February…
Congrats on a beauty, dwc
in reply to: My Elkheart has arrived!! #8167I just put the String Scallops from Two Tracks on my bow and they are really quiet. The last string I got seemed loud for some reason. I switched to the old string and it was quiet again. I put the Scallops on the new string and I only get a dull thunk. Cheap enough and they arrive quickly and not over packaged.

in reply to: Close encounters and backup #61468A question for you guys who pack a handgun. I’m in black bear country, so this does not really apply to me. When you are carrying a pistol, you’re packing a caliber that you would not consider anywhere big enough if it were in a rifle, right? I know it’s last resort and up close and personal, but I wonder how effective a 44 mag would be on a truly POed big bear or moose. All this and not to mention having the presence of mind to be able to aim the thing. Of course if you’re in the dark in the tent there’s no aiming anyway. Thoughts? dwc

in reply to: Archery References in Language #59072I like this thread. I can’t think of a thing and it’s making me upset. I’m trying not to come unstrung. dwc
in reply to: Into The Wild #57802Broadhead,
Not to worry. I think teaching can be a high burn out job. Teachers are under a lot of pressure and are also under attack for their wages constantly. Personally, I want professionals teaching my children. All of our teachers have masters degrees and they should be rewarded for their education and for their service to the community.
I know I’m aiding the hijack, so I’ll try to steer it back a little…
I wonder how many of us go into our woods for whitetails with more preparedness in our daypacks than McCandless did heading to the bush in Alaska. dwc

in reply to: Into The Wild #57670Hey Teachers,
Just so you know that there’s a least a couple of people out here who appreciate you. My wife and I have two young children and teachers either make or break their school days. We can be very active in their lives, but the school has them all day. We see what positive influences (almost always) have on them. I will always be available to vouch for your worth. I wish you both the best in your retirements and the pursuit of your dreams. best, dwc
in reply to: My first "harvest"… #56767Where do you look for these critters? Do they have a preferred habitat? thanks, dwc
in reply to: Into The Wild #56758I have the same reaction to the book and movie as did Steve. It’s about mental illness. Yes, we all have our issues and each issue either presents a road block or a hurdle. Cheers to the hurdlers out there and best wishes
to those who only see road blocks. McCandless was on to something and probably approached it the best way he could. His best was not enough and he didn’t have the perspective to listen and stay where it was safe. I’m not saying I only feel sorry for the guy nor am I saying he was some hero. But it is an interesting case. There are good lessons for the rest of us who like to go out into the cold, albeit lessons to simple most of us on this site knew them as children.
Mental illness is all around us and it does not get you a free pass. In my bit of experience in the news business and in personal life I’ve seen mental illness make people burn down buildings, hurt children, sit along in hallways and under bridges. McCandless paid plenty for being unprepared, but I’ll at least give him credit for living his life the best way he could and for not taking anyone with him.
in reply to: using test weights #55829I use the exact method of brushing and swabbing the inside of the carbon shaft as Smithy. I also started using a hot glue that I got from braveheart archery. It’s a little different than regular hot glue sticks and it really holds well and is easy to reverse as needed. dwc
