in reply to: wool or camo? #15089I’ll put my two cents in for merino base layers and hat. I’ve had great luck with the Columbia Gallatin Range pants and jacket. It’s wool and camo. The camo if large block stuff and it seems to work just fine. Who said it? Being still is the best camo. dwc
in reply to: Practice…. #15084I miss those days. Got some great hikes in with the kids in the backpack. Once they start walking, those hikes slow down for a few years. I had my son in the pack during a winter walk and got onto some ice along the creek. I ended up jumping into the creek rather than falling down. I go soaked up to the nether regions, but my son luckily stayed dry. It was a brisk stroll home through the woods that morning! dwc
I hope it dries out in CO soon. All the best to you all out that way. I hope your homes and families are safe. I wish you good hunting once all the rest is safe and sound. peace, dwc
in reply to: Binoc recommendation #14221I have a few pair of Bushnell Elite 7 x 26 Custom binos and I think they are the best thing going. I thought they were out of production, but I see them listed on a few sites. They go for about $235. They are light weight and have large enough exit optics to allow nice bright viewing in low light. The best thing is the field of view is pretty wide so acquisition is easy. They have changed the design and I can’t recommend their service as they do not keep parts for older models, but I do love the glass and how they work. They also focus pretty close so you can watch things on the ground from standing.
I also have some big 8 x 50 Steiner that are really great. No focus once they are sent and really bright, but big and heavy. dwc

in reply to: formula for bows #60320Arne,
thanks for the explanation. It all makes sense. I thought it must be something like that. There’s a lot to making a bow. Maybe someday I’ll give it a swing. Thanks, dwc
in reply to: formula for bows #59813Arne,
Why is that? Why should you not pull the bow back farther than the weight you are trying to end up with? Interesting. dwc
in reply to: Best wishes for the TBM family #59793A friend of our was diagnosed with the same thing and it was in a late stage, but she got good help and was able to beat it. She’s back at work now and doing well. I wish you all the best with this courageous fight. My heart is with you. dwc
in reply to: knock fitting to string #59458I hear mine up for a count of 10-15 in boiling water and then shove a flat piece of steel the width of my string into the nock. I might even work it back and forth a little to open it up a bit. It works fine and I never had trouble with a nock failing after being heated like that. dwc
in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #57376Once I get this bow figured out to my satisfaction, I might try to save up for one of the short ones. I’m planning to try a little more ground hunting this year, especially if I get lucky to put a little meat in the freezer early. I’ll see how much of an impediment my 62″ length is. dwc
in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #57346Yes, the skins are beautiful, but I’m really drawn to the wood in the riser. Very nice. dwc
in reply to: Quality, yet affordable knife suggestions? #57308Yes, no Pakistan knives for me. Those pocket knives will snap your fingernails off in a hurry. I’m lucky to have a few decent knives that will last me and my kids a few lifetimes. I just wondered if anyone had used them and how bad they were. thanks, dwc
in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #56509Smithy, I have a 62″ bow. I talked to Leon and he suggested a longer bow to get started with, as it should be smoother and more accurate. I shot one of his shorter bows a few years ago and it was really nice. As long as the bow is, I have not had any issues with length being a problem. ( I had to rephrase that…) I shoot out of tree stands and ladder stands and shoot kneeing and sitting. I got started with a 56″ Browning Wasp though and liked that a lot. I’m pretty much a one bow guy, but if I was going to get another, it would probably be one of Leon’s short bows. dwc
