This debate reminds me of that old fishing adage: You can catch a big fish with a small hook but you can’t hardly catch a small fish with a big hook. 😉

It makes total sense to me to carry as much bow as you can shoot well so you won’t have to pass on game that is too big for a lighter setup. As I said earlier, I like how King broke it out by bow weight and animal size. I won’t ever be shooting over 65# at my draw length so I will be confident on hogs up to 250# as long as my shots are 20 yards or less and at a quartering away angle.

When I started this thread I never imagined it would take the turns it has taken but I am grateful to all for all of the advice and amusement on this hog hunting thread.:)

I know its diet and exercise. Just got to get motivated again. I’ve been trying to cut back on the sugar and fatty foods but I’ve only lost a few pounds. And now the Holidays are coming up with all of that good food!

I have not heard that. Was it quick or slow. I’ve heard of using the snort/wheeze as a means of calming deer. I have only heard various grunts, snorts, bleats and who hasn’t been nailed by the blowing doe

Guys, I can identify with almost all of what has been said and I am convinced that if I could lose about 40 lbs I could carry Dave’s pack and maybe even keep up with him if he didn’t walk too fast. 😀

I know this is about elevated rests but you brought up the feather/vanes thing. Does cold affect the flexibility of plastic vanes? Around here if it gets down below 20 degrees most hunters are home hugging the stove pipe so I really don’t know. You might be in a place where 10 degrees is considered a warm day. Have you noticed any problems with vanes in the cold?

OK, what I’m calling snap shooting is drawing, aquiring the target, and shooting as soon as I come to full draw. If I try to hold and then shoot my grouping begins to deteriorate. Either way, to be consistent I literally have shoot almost every day. I’ve been shooting this way since I was 12 and I’m still not a really good shot so maybe I need to do something different like working on holding for 2 seconds and doing that figure 8 exercise.
Didn’t mean snap shooting as in point shooting with a shotgun at flushing birds in a thicket.

OK, I kind of answered my own question by Googling JD Berry. Looks like they are still making bows and “Yahweh” is the model, not the name of the bow. And Dad got a deal on that bow given the prices listed on their website. Anyhow, commments are still welcome.

                      Thanks Standing Bear,

In another month it will be time to harvest a few more staves. 😀

I have developed he habit of snap shooting too but my nemesis is not following through by dropping the bow to see where it hit. As long as I “anchor” at the corner of my mouth and keep my bow arm in place after the shot the arrow hits where I am looking consistently.
I have tried to hold anchor but my accuracy gets worse when I do. So, I make sure I get a full draw and follow through.

I have some private land that I can hunt and if I was to hunt public land I would go to the archery only areas.

                            King,

You are definitely hurtin’ those hogs. How close do you get? Judging from your gear, I’d guess you are closing to less than 20 yards, full camo including headnet. I know I would have a better chance at making a good shot inside 20 yards.
And I’m guessing you’re hunting in Texas?

I do the same thing Steve Sr is doing except without the tip protector. I was thinking today about taking along a small square of carpet to rest the tip on. Gun season started today here. I forgot about it but a nearby hunter reminded me about 30 minutes before dark. 😯

I’m with Standing Bear on using plain un-iodized salt for packing out your bear hide. I think the outdoor ambient temperature and humidity levels of the area you are hunting will also determine how much time you have before natural deterioration will begin to damage your hide.

                                Standing Bear,
have you ever used Borax? I dried a buck skin with it with the intention of using the rawhide to back a bow. I would then cut the strips needed and then soak it to rinse out the Borax. Have not got around to trying it yet though.

If your buck survives, no doubt he will be all the wiser. Since you may not be able to frequent those hills as regularly you should probably concentrate on learning where buck sign occurs regularly year after year. The more you hunt there the more apparent movement corridors become and the more likely you are to see bucks moving along those corridors. I like to find the food source where there will be alot of general deer sign then I fan out and look for the fainter buck trails that often parrallel the heavy sign. This is where you will find rubs and scrapes which tells you that bucks are using the area. In a nutshell, find the does and the bucks will be nearby.
