Had a triangular shaped Cobra sight pin mount on my recurve back in the late 70’s. Killed my first deer with it. Over time I found I did not need it and took it off the bow. Still have it in the bottom of my tackle box along with one of the those pendulum sights I used on the compound bow in thw 80’s.

Yeah, if it is thick it might not work for a bowstring. I’ve always thought a groundhog pelt would make a great sporran, The bag Scotsmen wear in front of the kilt. If you had not guessed already I’m from Scottish descent. I saw a dude wearing a possum sporran with the head on (skinned of course)at the Highland games a couple years ago!

The mountain folk here valued the groundhog’s fat rendered into an oil, used as a liniment for various aches and pains.
Bet that groundhog hide would make a good primitive bow string.
That possum sounds like it may be like racoon. The racoon is mostly dark meat too.

Awesome pics guys! At this point I’ll just have to live vicariously through you. It’s all I can do to pack my own butt in and out of the woods! Time to lose some weight. 😳

O we are going to fine out here before long. I dont waste anything. If I dont like to eat it, I probably wont kill it, with the exception of groundhogs and carp. But in situations like this, there is only one way to find out if I like it . . .

I’ve heard groundhog is good. Probably the young ones are best with less fat to remove. I know this is true with racoons. I’ve BBQ’d the small ones but the ‘coons over 4 pounds have too much fat for me.

Hey how’s about a “cook along”!

                  Chris,

Kerosene might be safer than gasoline 😯

I have seen a taxidermist use gasoline but I do not suggest you do it.

I got sprayed with grease from a backhoe once and when I got home I coated my jacket with Lemon Joy dish detergent let it soak awhile before tossing it in the washer with more Lemon Joy. It completely removed the grease with one wash cycle!

Maybe Joy will work on beaver grease?

Yeah, that tail hide will look good on a long bow for a handle. I’m glad you got one for all your effort!

I see Iodine tablets were mentioned (I assume for water). I carry water but if I was on a prolonged pack in… I would invest in a portable water purification system. 1) because they are very small and portable; and 2) because Iodine tablets are the most gosh awful stuff to put in water there is. 🙄 I got sick once in the military due to purposely avoiding the iodine tablets. You should use them if that is all you have, but there are better alternatives.

Yeah, the iodine is just in case. Typically, I would not expect to spend the night in the woods where I hunt. I have got turned around a couple of times. But then I decided to believe in my compass and I got out. I have thought about getting one of those filters because I know that iodine is bad tasting stuff.

Since my quarry is whitetail I can get by with a decent butt pack.
                        Heres what’s in it.
                        small pruning shears
                        Gerber folding saw
                        50′ of parachute chord
                        rain poncho
                        space blanket
                        fire starter, matches, or lighter
                        pocket first aid kit
snake bite kit in warm weather or for Eastern hunts
Compass – if it is not in my pocket
                        Grunt / Bleat calls
                        Extra folding knive
                        Iodine tablets
                        Snickers bars
                        Cookies
                        Sandwich
                        Water bottle on the belt
Empty bottle to go in so I don’t foul up my hunting spot
                        small roll TP
2 small flashlights with fresh batteries
                        Binoculars unless I’m wearing them
Tri-pod stool strapped to the outside.

Maybe I’ll post a pic later.

I think that is about it.
If I’m carrying rattling antlers I put them in a small day pack for safety purposes and that pack might also contain an extra shirt jac.

Welcome Herald! I have been to Spain and I wondered if there were any bowhunters there. I mostly saw the country from the train but it was an amazing country to see. I wish I could spend more time there learning of the hunting and fishing there must be. We went to Madrid, Salamanca, and Vallodolid.
Are there many bowhunting opportunities there?

Excellent response Dave! You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

Apparently these types of sentiments from gun hunters is not new or isolated. 20+ years ago I witnessed a similar speech at a NCWRC hearing. They were trying to stop additional weeks being added to the archery season. I drew the conclusion that the gentleman was trying to mislead the board with an emotional plea, saying they did not realize how “good” we are with our bows. Clearly he had not reviewed the previous years kill report. Easy kill? Oh please give us all a break!

Have not checked lately but Cabelas had a thick wool cardigan zip up. I have one and I love it as a layering garment. By itself in heavy brush it might get picked. They also have some with a tighter knit that might not pick as easily. Those are lined with Windstopper. I have the vest and I like it too. But as Clay said they ain’t cheap.

If you will hunt in brush G.Fred’s shirts might be best.

I’ve been looking at the kits online. I’m like Tom I don’t think I would like the pants. There is a kind of cape design that might be cooler instead of the full clothing type.

Maybe you could use a mesh shirt as a base garment?

Thanks for dispelling the myth that caps/hats cause baldness!
And I just got my cap in the mail and I agree that the quality is excellent. Thanks, Larry, Robin, TBM!
