Belated Happy Birthday wishes for you, Dave!

I’m having a heck of a time finding a plaid, woolen, loincloth though. I was thinking maybe I should go with fleece though, since there will be less shrinkage if I were to get caught in a rain storm. 😯
Less itch too 🙂
in reply to: Robin Hood #36905Dave! Just order Avatar via Netflix!
I love all the Robin Hood versions. My son used to watch the Kevin Costner version over and over. Move over Kevin, Russell’s taking over. I bet this one is destined to be a favorite too!

in reply to: "Wow, now THAT'S a VERY old bow!" #36889Heres what I get at my club: “Well here he comes with a REAL bow!” Sarcastic bunch of wheel bowmen. And yeah it is a real bow with real wood arrows.
in reply to: Help with dogwood self arrows #30562Since you cut them with the sap up I would dry them and then peel them. They might split if you peel them now although the bark will come off easier when green. Put them up in the attic for about 3 weeks and see how dry they get. You could probably peel them then without worry. Also may help to tie them up in a bundle to minimize warping while drying. It gets warm enough in my shed during summer to dry things but if you don’t have a shed the attic works or even a car not being used that gets sunlight.
I use heat to straighten but try not to burn with an open flame. A small rasp and a cabinet scraper will help smooth out the occasional knot and get the diameter more uniform. It’s alot of work but dogwood makes a heavy indestructible shaft.in reply to: Wood Arrows WithOUT A Sealant #25467Linseed will seal it but it does have a lingering odor.
I have sealed my viburnum shafts by burnishing them and coating with bees wax. buff with a cotton rag and they are slick as can be. Just wax again as needed.in reply to: Bow Season vs. Crossbows #25461Kinetic Bolt Gun Season???
in reply to: Michigan Volunteer Hog Trappers Sought #24387I’ve heard that trapping is more effective than hunting them. Good luck with that. I’ve also read that hogs will respond to pressure by mating more often and at younger ages. Explains why they are so tough to get rid of.
in reply to: White Deer #24383Some say its serious bad juju to kill a white deer. I’m not superstitious myself, but I’m just sayin’. I’ve not seen one to shoot so I don’t know.
in reply to: Bow Season vs. Crossbows #24373Looks like things got spirited around here while I was away!
Yeah, I don’t much care for cross bows. I have my doubts as to their effectiveness and I think those who choose them will be disappointed when the “range” isn’t what they thought it would be.
I’m more disappointed in our NCWRC playing games with our seasons just to appease what amounts to a commercial play by the crossbow industry.
On the flip side my uncle has MS and might benefit from crossbows but he is leagally disabled and can do so now. He has one of those vises that holds a rifle or shotgun and his wife sets him out in the edge of the field with it when he feels like going.
I hope this turns out to be much ado about nothing. Since compounds perform way better than crossbows who would switch to a crossbow? There will be that initial pitch that crossbows are easier and anyone can shoot one, etc. but they’ll find out after they spent all that money. What was that PT Barnum used to say?

in reply to: good old mushroom #7845Anybody got their recipe for morels or the puffballs?
I’ve known folks to eat the puffballs but I don’t know how to prepare them. I’m talking about the large ones that grow in pastures.Duncan
in reply to: good old mushroom #7842Thanks Chris,
It’s been kind of dry here. Don’t they come up better after a rain? I have not seen any yet but I saw a squirrel eating something down by the creek. Had to be a morel. They will eat the heck out of them.
Duncanin reply to: good old mushroom #7837JayT,
I’m in Hillsborough. I was just up in Charlotte a couple of weeks a go for SGA at the Charlotte Convention Ctr. I love Charlotte the folks there are great.
Duncanin reply to: Multitool Suggestions #7832I have a Leatherman Super tool the wife got me for Christmas more than 10 years ago. Although it has not seen daily use it is a very well made tool and the first time I carried it on a float trip I sheared a pin on my outboard in low water so I used my Leatherman to make the repair which was why I wanted it. It lives in the glove box ready to go along.
For everyday I carry a Swiss Army knife. It even has a very sharp saw but the scissors get the most use clipping leaders and unruly mustache hairs.
With my Fly fishing kit I have a Leatherman Clip, a small version of the multi-tool with scissors instead of pliers.
