in reply to: Vanilla Cover Scent tip #21678
I have not personally used it but have heard of its use as Steve mentioned. I have used soap that had a low amount of anise oil in it and I thought it was a very good product to keep yourself clean without using commercial soap before a hunt. Wish I could find that soap again. But getting back on subject, I would not object to trying the vanilla. I beleive Steve is right though, that it is a curiosity attractant. I think it is worth experimenting with.
in reply to: The trees are on fire… #21669I’m envious. With record dryness in our region and many of the understory trees turning brown and dying I doubt our fall will be very colorful. But I’m hopeful since our colors are still weeks away. But hey, thanks so much for the great shots of fall foliage in the Northwoods! And good luck with your hunting.
in reply to: Stump-Fire, Wetterling & Lunch? #19643Great post Croatoan! Could almost smell the fried egg and woodsmoke. I like the minimalist approach to making do with what you have.

It looks very nice!
Steve,
I was worried the epoxy would be too messy and the titebond might not do well with the fiberglass. I found tutorials online that said to use Barges contact cement (3 Rivers was one of them) and Tru Oil for the finish. I had no experience with Tru-Oil so I used satin polyurethane which I have used on all of my selfbows with no problems. They don’t see direct sunlight enough to harm them so I feel it is OK. Only thing, the satin still has a little shine. Wish I could find some flat finish.
With the contact cement it is tricky getting the skin lined up. Had to pull the first one back off at the start when I saw it was out of line but it still stuck OK. Had to go around the edges and glue down the minute places where the skin might lift. Once I have all of those down I’m going to put one more coat of poly on it and hunt with it. I shot it a bunch Sunday and so far no problems.
The Barges spread well with a popsicle stick on the bow and the skin.Duncan
in reply to: Glenn St Charles has left us 9/19/2010 #17226Sorry to hear of Glenn’s passing. Is he the last of “The Little Delta” adventurers?
When we go out this Fall to hunt with our traditonal bows we honor Glenn and others like him.

in reply to: Just seemed fitting to hunt here with a Longbow! #17205What Islite said!
in reply to: Snake skins on my recurve limbs #17188Well, I decided to do it myself. I was really worried about the contact cement, fumes, accidentally ruining my skins, etc.
But here it is….I just strung it after 24 hrs of curing and so far nothing has popped off 😉
in reply to: What's your favorite bowhunting song? #13671I guess if I have to think about it long it means I don’t have a specific one for bowhunting.
But I love me some Allman Bros and “Dunky Town” might work cause thats where I’m going after the hunt. (Its “Funky” for all ya’ll, but “Dunky” for me):D
Hmmm, I’m just liable to change my screen name to Dunky……The foxes dig yellow jackets for the larvae in my neck of the woods. Never seen anything mess with hornets though. Reminds me to get some fresh benedryl for my first aid kit!

in reply to: arrows "porpoising" #12645I’m not completely up on FOC either but I do understand that a heaver tip can possibly solve the problem. It’s part of that FOC formula.
Are you shooting off the shelf or using a rest? Please describe.
As John mentioned it could be your arrow spine. Sometimes you can get away with a stiffer spine but I usually stick with the spine weight that matches my bow weight. If your draw is shorter than the 28″ standard you might have to try some different arrows as John suggests until you find the right one. Is there a shop nearby that will let you try some arrows or an archery club? -
