in reply to: The Silent Arrow #29591Hmmm, I wonder if some rod winding would work?
in reply to: I saw him before he saw me… #28271We should keep a camera hand all the time. Saturday I had a young Coopers hawk try to take a squirrel I was watching just 15 feet in front of me. I saw him coming low through the understory like a fighter plane. The squirrel dodged all about like he did not know which way to go. I never would have got that with a camera but the hawk lit in a small tree and was giving the squirrel the eye. May have been a brief opportunity for a hawk pic…..
in reply to: CO last day elk hunt: a story of success #27505What a thrilling tale! A successful hunt in my opinion.
in reply to: Who is your bowhunting hero and why? #26495Of the iconic bowhunters, Fred Bear is my favorite but I look up to the others too and enjoy reading of their exploits with bow and arrow. But it was my uncle who got me started with a Shakespeare glass target bow and some arrows for my 12th birthday. Shot a blackbird and a few field rats with it!
in reply to: Share a Tip #26480I like the cattail idea! Being of Scottish descent and the thistle being important in Scottish lore I did not know that the thistle had invaded North America and is a pest here in some states. I guess we should not use that one for a wind indicator.
I’ll also use milkweed if I can find some. I think Milkweed is a food source for some butterfly larvae most notably the Monarch Butterfly.
Thanks for the tips!in reply to: Repairing minor damage? #26027Try some epoxy. I have not done this on a bow but I have used this on a wooden boat. I had a screw head that would not hold filler for long so I mixed up some 8 hour epoxy and dabbed it into the hole just enough to fill it level. Then I placed a piece of blue painters masking tape over it like a band-aid and let it set up. The tape put enough pressure on it to keep it smooth while curing. When I peeled the tape off the next day it was smooth and set up hard. You could sand it smooth and refinish right over it. Rod building epoxy would be clearer than the type you buy at the hardware. I don’t know how large or small your dents are but this may work for you.
If it is a really small dent try a dab of clear fingernail polish.in reply to: Pre-Rut Hunt, Pointers #23994eidsvolling wrote: We have a bumper acorn crop everywhere there are oaks, an antlered deer-only season until Oct. 1, and a forecast high today of 86. I’ll be home today working instead of hunting. 🙁
That makes it tough to hunt on acorns unless there are more than one type. Then you might notice a preference to one type. Otherwise you have to go to plan B and hunt the breaks. No matter where you are there should be breaks in topography, breaks in type of timber, breaks in vegetation. And there will be natural funnels within those breaks. Once found they work year after year. Around here the edge of a break between hardwoods and pine is a natural travel corridor. Locating travel corridors along break lines may be the ticket. I once found a place in an endless hardwood bottom where a tornado or wind shear had pushed down about an acre of trees. This caused new growth to pop up as the trees rotted down. I got a good 10 or so years out of that spot. Deer loved to move through and around it and I loved to hang my stand beside it. Well thats my 2 cents, good luck with your hunt.
in reply to: HUNTING ARROWS #23189Here is a sampling of what lives in my quivers…..
Top to Bottom:
5/16 Hickory w/ Zwickey 100 gr
11/32 POC w/ Zwickey 125 gr
11/32 Lodge Pole Pine w/ Zwickey 125 gr
Camo Easton XX75 2117 w/ Alum Ferrule Bear Razorhead
Vintage Easton GameGetter 2117 w/ vintage Bear RazorheadAlso have 2 Vintage Bear Kodiak Hunter fiberglass arrows but they are retired now.
Can’t wait for Oct 15 so I can go for some bushytails. Now, in NC on Sundays archery gear is legal for whatever game is in season. Except migratory birds.
in reply to: Pre-Rut Hunt, Pointers #23121I’m with Steve. Find the acorns they want and you will find the deer. It may be does and yearlings but its part of the formula that plays out from now through the rut. Its simple.
Acorns = Deer + Rut = Bucks. A kind of find the does and the bucks will come theory.
in reply to: Archery in Western MA? #22570That’s a shame. Hope you find an objective instructor. This also could be a lesson in reality for your son. That he will, in life, have to bump elbows with these people. He may have to learn to hunker down, take the course and walk away with his certificate and a good understanding of who he is and who he never wants to be like.

in reply to: New bow, need help please #21685I’d buy it just because its only 60.00!! But seriously, what is the AMO of the Wasp? Is it a short bow? Could you shoot it before you buy it? If it is a short bow you want to make sure there is no string pinch at your draw. But heck, I’d buy a 60.00 bow, shoot it awhile and look for a heavier one. You would probably be OK with 45 to 50 pounds to begin with and it is well documented that 40 will take whitetail.
