I agree with what JWestbrock said, total arrow weight.
I think the GPI of a particular shaft is used in a formula to determine the weight of the shortest, lightest shaft one can safely shoot from a compound bow. This may be of importance to the wheelie crowd but your draw length, spine, and overall arrow/head weight is more important to us Traditionalists.

in reply to: Split or Cut #14475I’ve had good success using 2 wedges and a 8# sledge hammer. Look carefully at the growth pattern on the bark and at the growth rings on each end to determine the best place to start. I usually start at one end and work toward the other end, leap frogging the wedges as I go. I start the first wedge right on the end at an angle. When it is halfway in I start the other one in the crack created by the first one. This relases the first one and so on. Helps if you have someone to help you but I’ve done it alone too. Good luck and don’t forget to remove the bark as soon as possible to keep the bugs out. Also storing your staves inside will keep the bugs out too.
in reply to: Thought i would share some pics. #14459Well, the backyard spot has always been reserved for when my other spots don’t work out. I have a couple of spots 15 – 20 minutes away and acres of public land about 30 minutes away, some of it accessible by boat or by foot if you want to rub elbows with everyone else. Hard to imagine having to travel to deer hunt because now they are everywhere in our state.

in reply to: Just Me and the Squirrels…. #13321Been raining here too but this weekend is looking promising. The woods are ablaze with color and there is still alot of foliage still hanging on. Going to spend some time in the squirrel and deer woods! Note to self: Don’t forget the camera.

in reply to: Need info for WV deer hunt #13217Hey Dave,
Just open Google Earth or Google Maps and enter the address and state in the search feature. Should put you right on the property. With Google Maps you will have to turn on the satelite view.
Good Luck
Duncanin reply to: Need info for WV deer hunt #12235Since you have little time to scout how about finding the property on Google Earth and peruse the satelite view. Might offer some insight on the types of vegetation or crop lands that are there. You might even be able to see those internal edges Paleo spoke of. Also the County GIS may have topography available online which could help you get a view of the lay of the land. Not traditional ways to scout but hey you have only 2 days, you may as well use it to your advantage!

in reply to: First Trad Whitetail Buck…. DOWN #11169Cotton,
I’m glad you got to share the hunt with your son and congratulations on your deer. I’m right there with you on the trophy status of your buck. With Traditional gear, they are all trophies!

Mark.
Mark,
In days gone by I used a .38 brass case but they were too light. How much 6 shot do you use in yours?

I do, else I’d use ’em for stumping because they slip right over field points, fast and easy. But I can’t imagine they can kill as efficiently as a hard steel point. Not arguing, just curious. dave
Hi Dave,
,
I have not lost a squirrel yet with the 11/32 rubber blunt. I’ve missed plenty though! However, I need them to be close because my effective range is about to 20 yards. I have a hunch out past that range they might not have enough energy, but at 10 – 15 yards it will hammer them. Of course head shots are the best but a hit to the thorax is also deadly. “Aiming” is no problem for me I don’t look at the point when shooting, I look only at the spot I want to hit.
I would like to try the Ace Hex head though.Duncan
in reply to: Halloween Buck #10740You are no longer just Archer Ed! We will call you “He Runs With the Deer”. Congratulations!
in reply to: Small Game Heads #10085No experience with the Ace heads. Rubber blunts and Judos work too.
in reply to: Should Traditional bowhunting be more mainstream? #10016I’m no marketing expert but I’d say that products that have become maintream were promoted heavily by the industry. Traditional equipment recieves less promotion because it is part of the past history of archery. Perhaps when the current technology falls out of favor traditional could experience a renaissance of sorts. I think we are really already headed in that direction with more and more archers turning to a more challenging experience that can be had with Traditional equipment. That’s one aspect, the equipment, the other is the experience. How can it become Mainstream without promotion of the experience? So far, what I’m seeing in terms of advertising is worlds away from the personal experience that I percieve. So, for now there may just be two parallel industries not tied together except that one gave life to the other. With one chasing after an illusion and the other sticking to….well, Tradition.
