      George,
I have a love/hate relationship with those birds. I hate it when they bust me on stand. But I love to hear them sing at first light, teaching their young their song, passed down for generations. Flying all the way back here from wintering in South/Central America to nest. Do things like this just happen? For me it says that something larger than ourselves that we cannot begin to fully understand is at work in our world and we should look up from our preoccupation and pay attention and give thanks.

If success was measured by how many birds we got we would likely not get up and go again. But the possibility keeps us going. I’d take that trip any day even without getting a bird. Great pics and I enjoyed seeing your camp too.

Those trees are native to NC and while they are not a good bow wood you could make other things with it. You could get a couple of good boat paddles out of that log and maybe a few odd planks for odd jobs. Cypress is very rot resistant and lasts well outdoors. Grandpa made me a cypress paddle for my creek boat that lasted for years with no finish on it. The left over odd plank or two could become a weather resistant blue bird house!

Although not a Traditional movie in the sense that it is not an old movie The Weatherman with Nicolas Cage about a Chicago Weatherman who struggles with lifes twists and turns and finds a connection in traditional archery. A pretty good modern flick.

A Bear Weather rest won’t shred feathers, is very inexpensive, can be changed out easily, and is great for hunting. For a step up in adjustability and to increase accuracy, I like J.Westbrock’s setup.

Love the eagles. We have them at the local reservoirs, they usually seek the backwater areas where there is less boat traffic. There are always some nesting pairs and so far it seems people mostly let them be. The Audobon Society put up some blinds for observation and the areas where they frequent the most are somewhat restricted during nesting season. I have seen them on other parts of the lake while fishing. The coolest sight was seeing one take a fish from an ospey in mid air in a short aerial battle.

I use the homemade yarn silencers and lately I’ve used strips of grey fleece material – very quiet and don’t soak up water as much. I have the beaver balls on my selfbows – just seems to go together.

Lacking a mentor, I set about experimenting after studying everything I could find on it. If you could work with someone who can teach, your learning curve will be greatly reduced but if you don’t have that, then what Holten and others posted will help. Primitive Archer is where I got bit by the bug. PA and TBM, my two favorite sources of inspiration.
I had already made 4 bows when I got the Bowyers Bible series.
Cut some bow wood and start shaving. I decided to work on my first one before the wood was completely dry which was not the best idea but my other staves were drying while I was learning. Made all the classic mistakes on the first one. The next thre turned out great and are all still shooting, even the 30# “green” bow

David Petersen wrote: I would not think you’d want to put any finish or veneer over a compass anyhow? If it’s mounted into the wood, you can use an auger bit to create a recess the right diameter and depth, then put finish on the exposed wood in the hole before gluing in the compass. If on glass veneer, just glue it on. IMHO, I have never thought that a compass mounted in a bow would be worth a darn in any serious “find yourself” situation and that the jarring from repeated shooting would mess up the needle and pivot. But I can’t speak from personal experience. Best luck, dp

                      Dave,
I use the bow mounted compass to get a fix on the direction the animal went after the shot. Of course I could use my pocket compass but if I forget that I still have the one on my bow for a backup. Not made for recording precision nav co-ordinates but works in a pinch. After years of shooting mine still points north. Theres no pivot point, it floats in liquid! Always wondered if it would freeze in cold weather but so far not had that problem.

I installed one of the plastic ones from 3 rivers using the corresponding flat bit and a variable drill. Be sure to grind down the pilot tip so it can’t come out the other side. And cover the area with masking tape to minimize the possibility of chipping the finish. Go slow and check the depth by taking it for a dry run occasionally until you have the desired depth. Add a dab of epoxy to permanently seal it in place. Marbles still makes the brass ones if you want that type.

                                Steve,

I injured mine repeatedly over a 20+ year period doing pipeline work. I think Don summed it up the best. I think I beat the odds for many years by religiously doing the right exercises as specified by my doctor. You don’t want to let a brace become a crutch. It will do more harm than good however, a weight lifters belt is a good thing to have if you often lift heavy things. I used one for years to prevent injury but I only wore it while lifting. I would take it off after use. Even doing stuff like stacking firewood you need some protection. Some of my worst back problems came from reaching too far to get a light object. So don’t reach for anything beyond arms length. Go around and get it!
Anyhow, hope you get better soon, Steve.

Just check Ron’s site right after K’zoo to see what is left over. Something might suit you. Thats what I did. I did’nt get to customize it but hey, I did’nt have to wait either and it looks custom enough for me.
