in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #20762
I take it Steve is not a Duke fan
looks like Duke blue instead of the Carolina blue. Are those single bevels right twist? I’m a lefty and I shoot right helical.
in reply to: Redwing Boots #20089I wore Redwing pull ons when I was pipelining. You could kick them off if a ball of slag fell down your boot. Ouch. But they are long lasting but as Dave said they were not suited to hunting. They probably make a lace up with insulation and a vibram sole though.
I’ve been partial to Chippewa boots. I have a pair of the classic brogues for my Engineering work and a pair of the upland bison leather boots for woods loafing. The uplands are very comfortable but light on the insulation. I just wear some light wool socks and I’m good to go.
in reply to: Something Special for my Selfbow #19972I’ve got some cane I’ve been saving. Now I know what I want to do with it. Thanks for sharing that. I saw your video too. Very good idea.

in reply to: Plaid Shirts #19963Shrimp,
I just realized you said you were from south Texas where it is warm. You could probably do with cotton flannel. Of course cotton is a cuss word to our Northern Bretheren. Another option for warm to coolish weather (low 30’s-high 20’s) is Cabelas Worsterlon. It wears like wool and wicks like poly pro, is machine washable and never fades. I’ve been using the same three shirts for more than 12 years. It is not as expensive as wool and you are in luck they are selling it again. It disappeared for a while but I noticed it is back in the catalog.

in reply to: NY opening day #9959Good job finding and dispatching your deer in rainy conditions to boot. It was an honorable kill because you made the extra effort.

in reply to: Opinions on take down longbows II #61992Steve Graf wrote: Yea, I shoot a 66 inch bow. So a 2 piece bow would be about 35″. I’ve been using a nice role around suitcase. Getting lazy. But I might be able to get a duffle that is long enough. But then it will probably be a really big bag…
I think there are some duffels now with wheels…
in reply to: How to deal with mosquitoes? #61988Steve Graf wrote: I have a thermocell and have used it in canada for spring bear hunting. It definitely works. But I’d be scared to use it day in and day out. I figure it must be no good to breath. Sitting there breathing that chemical soup hour after hour has got to be bad in the long run.
Probably no worse than slathering down with Deet which worked for me on my Bear hunt. Back then there was’nt any other choices.

Don’t do it.
Nothing Traditional about them. OK, that was more than three words.in reply to: Deer Hunters…Morning or Evening? #53035I’ve had the most success with evenings but I know deer can be found moving at mid-day. I’ve seen deer moving mid-morning as well, I assume moving from feeding areas to bedding areas.
I’m with Two Rivers on rattling, it is best in the morning for me. I prefer a frosty morning with only thermal currents moving any air. It can’t get much better than that 😀in reply to: fast flight and selfbows #51934I have only used B-50 on my selfbows, 14 and 16 strand. Maybe your excessive stretch is due to the use of 12 strands? I’m not having any problems with 14 and 16 strand strings that I have made or the ones I have purchased.
in reply to: Let's see your fall hunting set up! #50871Well, I included two of my favorite knives in my setup pic so I think questions about them are as relevant as questions about bows. Not trying to hi-jack the thread, to answer Dave’s question, the knife is a Schrade Uncle Henry 171UH. They never were as popular as some of the lighter weight Schrade knives but I like it with its own honing stone it is somewhat utilitarian but is a nice looking knife with some heft to it. Sadly, the new ones available are made in China now but USA made models can be found on e-bay and some knife forums. I found mine in a vintage jewelry shop in Virginia.

The gut hook was added by the previous owner which diminishes the collectability of the knife but I wanted it to use so I don’t mind it.

in reply to: What are you reading in Elk camp? #49368I once read “The Importance of Being Ernest” during a deer season. It was pocket sized and a classic I had never read but I have to say George is right. I was in one place but my mind was off in another place. I did not kill a deer that year. These days I might carry a book of verse if I feel the need to divert my attention awhile. If you don’t really care if you kill a deer or not, reading outdoors is a great activity. Finding a sunny spot about mid-day and taking a woods nap is too!
