in reply to: Squirrels 3 Duncan 1 #28259
Hope to get out some later this week. Christmas shopping all done, most of the family get togethers behind me. Just me and the family this weekend on Christmas. Off work Thurs thru Mon. Should be able to go. I’m hoping it won’t rain too much.
in reply to: Bamboo Arrow Shafts #259983 Rivers has heat tempered bamboo shafts and it is on sale too.
in reply to: Fletching glue #25990I also use fletch tape and would like to hear what happened. If there is a safety concern I’d like to know.
Thanks

in reply to: Wisconsin Albinos #23821I think no matter what we do or don’t do, in the end nature will prevail. The white deer we are talking about are but a tiny fraction of the overall deer population in America. I’m not worried about ’em.
in reply to: Looking For a Longbow #21466I’m also a Shrew fan, I have a Super Shrew 50#@28″ the “brown phase” in curly etimoe limbs and brown action wood riser. If you want a really light weight bow in the hand the Shrew is it.
Also have a JD Berry 56# @28″, a little less forgiving but fun to shoot.
I may have to get a Great Northern Bush Bow some day. They seem like a very nice production bow for the money.
in reply to: Squirrels 3 Duncan 1 #21439Rip,
That is an awesome squirrel! I’ve seen some black ones in Maryland and in DC but they were not as fat as that one. Good shot!

in reply to: Pittsley Predator? #20064Mine is 50# @ 28″ has the bubinga/grey stained riser with black glass limbs. I added snake skins to the limbs myself. It is quiet shooting and shoots a cedar shaft pretty fast off the shelf. I had to add my own bear hair shelf. The one that came with it was not so great. I don’t know if it will weigh less han a modern compound since todays compounds are so much smaller than the one I had back in the 80’s I could put mine on the scales tonight and give you a weight if you want. I don’t worry too much about the weight for around here. If I went on an epic adventure I’d take my Shrew too save on weight.
in reply to: Pittsley Predator? #19359You can go to Hunter’s Niche website and see their products. I have the TD recurve and it is a good shooter. It may be a little heavy (physically) than some would like but if you don’t mind a riser with a little heft its a good bow. They also market a plain jane version through Bass Pro.

in reply to: Best 'take down' recurve ? #18959It will be tough to beat the value of a Samick bow. I have the one piece Volcano and love it. If the workmanship of the take down models is anything like my one piece then you will not be disapointed for the money spent.
I have a Hoyt Huntmaster TD which is no longer produced but I think the Gamemaster is a similar TD model. My Huntmaster was under 300.00 but don’t know how much the Gamemaster costs. My Hoyt is a great shooter too.
Of course another option would be to keep looking through classifieds and other online sale sites for a nicer model at the right price.
in reply to: Is it the Traditional way? #17770Shrimp,
I think we have come to the conclusion that its OK to hunt from a tripod stand since hunting from above has been around alot longer than we have.
There are some scrub pocosins in Eastern NC that I used to hunt where I always wanted a tripod. There were dozens of fire lanes cut through that stuff with deer trails crossing. We were more or less relegated to stalking the fire lanes. Needless to say I always got busted before I could get a shot. The trees were to scrubby and small to climb but a tripod next to one of those scrub trees would have been the ticket.
These scrub places can be loaded with deer and no one likes to hunt them for the obvious reasons. I’d go for it Shrimp!
in reply to: Wisconsin Albinos #14821Neat video and the white buck would be too pretty to kill. I think I’d let him walk.
There are occasional white deer in this area and a few pie-balds show up from time to time.
And there are a few colonies of white squirrels in NC. I’ve seen 2 in Durham and they are somewhat famous in the town of Brevard, NC.
in reply to: Is it the Traditional way? #14509I’ve got a feeling that the first native who took game from the tree limbs was not run out of the village on a rail but instead hailed as a great hunter and provider of the tribe. I think hunting from a tripod is just using human ingenuity which I beleive is a tradition in its own right or else we would be still living in caves.
Is it Traditional to drive a 2011 model pickup truck to the jumping off point or a ’49 stepside with no heat in it and straight axles?
I’m just saying 😀
in reply to: Are we forgetting our roots? #12555[quote=”LimbLoverI actually enjoy Chuck Adams’ stories. You tend to forget what he is hunting with. That is a shame though
I’m kind of hoping that Fred Eichler helps to bring some of these guys over.
I remember reading Chuck’s articles years ago and in one such article he was advocating the use of plaid shirts and dark jeans or other types of pants other than camo. The article was encouraging others to hunt with whatever bow they had and whatever clothing they could muster. Touting sound hunting practices as more important. I liked that Chuck too. We can only hope that eventually, like many of us have done, he will come to his senses and come back to his roots.Duncan
in reply to: Meat in the Freezer #11141If I am lucky enough to get a deer I do the butchering myself. As many have so astutely noted, “Shooting is the easy part, now the work begins”
I often have my Mom or my Wife to help with the wrapping and labeling, but have done it all myself on occasion.
To me it is not a mundane chore but a job that must be done well to further honor the animal that died to provide sustenance for us.in reply to: Bowfishing for birds?! #8680Sounds risky to me too, however, those old string trackers might work. Less drag, less likely to malfunction and hurt you. And the floss like material could be used to retrieve the bird. Unfortunately it might not be re-usable.
