in reply to: a video of a "outside of the box" hunt #35005

Great video and I love how your plan worked. As for the shot I agree on your analysis, I shot one that did the same thing one time but I did find it after a few hours of trailing.
Looking at your setup and the angle of the wound channel My guess is you were close to 20′ up. If you would come down to about 15′ you can reduce the steepness of the shot angle and maybe able to avoid that. I used to do the same thing then I found I got just as many shots at 14-15 feet and the shot angle was better. Don’t know if you were looking for us to critique it or not but I thought I would offer up what I thought I saw in the video. Also I do understand that height is sometimes necessary where there is little cover and this time of year all the understory is gone so I do understand why some will go higher in that situation.
in reply to: Help finding deer please! #33728Forager, I agree, that is good of you to offer to scout it with him. What about Sundays? Is that a hunting day in MD? If not you could do some scouting that day without disturbing other hunters.
While there is nothing that can replace boots on the ground I have found that old school topo maps and more recently, Google Maps can be used to find areas of interest before you start your scouting trips. Also don’t forget the local County Public Records GIS which often has flood plain overlays and topo overlays along with the Aerial veiws as well as landowner info. Its a good place to start so when you can get in there and scout it will be more effective. Good luck!
in reply to: Lamentations #33709Don’t get me wrong I don’t agree with much of todays attitude in the outdoor “sports” especially hunting and fishing. Oh yes this same stuff is all over fishing too. But I must say as a 50 something I have spent some time observing and learning about the other generations particularly in the workplace but also in every other aspect of life. Some things jumped out at me in your post, particularly the use of mobile devices and social networking. Millenials literally grew up with a joystick or computer or phone in their hands. They invented one handed texting and what you described as “Group Think”. This type of social collaboration was unheard of in our time when the individual and individual accomplishment was most valued. Also it is not a far stretch to understand their infatuation with Tech Gear and beleiving that the right gear can overcome experience. Heck it always worked on PlayStation. Fortunately there are a few that trickle over to experience Trad shooting and hunting usually after realizing they really need more of a challenge.
As for this old man? I say one mans “dink” is another mans trophy!
in reply to: Making Amends #30417Yep, I would punch my tag too. I have heard game wardens ask hunters if there were any lost deer. One guy said yes and the warden punched his tag on the spot. There are many who would not admit it or punch their own tag in this situation.
in reply to: Scent control? #30402Its funny, I have used the scent killer spray in the house and in the truck to kill doggie odors and it works fairly well as far as covering the scent without creating another scent at least as far as I can tell. Can a deer’s nose smell the scent killer? I don’t know I never remember to use it on me. Lol.
I don’t think we can be scent free. The best we can do is watch the wind and try to keep ourselves and our clothing and equipment as clean and scent free as possible. Hanging clothes/boots outdoors etc and not exposing our clothes or ourselves to strong odors before going into the woods is about the best we can do.
in reply to: Problem with a loosing finger #30395Agree with going to dermatologist. Some insurance carriers cover wart removal as mine does. Even without insurance coverage it is not that expensive.
in reply to: Squirrels and Flu Flu Fletch #24973Ben,
Are you using fletch tape on those fletching? We may need a tutorial on making those 😀

in reply to: Squirrels and Flu Flu Fletch #21532I let fly on a grey yesterday that was perched on a rock pile at about 15 yds. Risky, I know but that arrow flew perfectly to where it “was”. I think the squirrel had made me at the last minute. You have to catch them by surprise if you can. The ones I’ve taken with blunts did not have time to react which is hard to stay ahead of consistently.
in reply to: 300 Tuffhead testimony #18285Sweet! Looks cold up there!
A quick study on the net turned up information on both squirrels. The Pine Squirrel is our smallest squirrel and may not be worth the effort unless they are easy to bag and you can get enough to make a meal. The Abert is a larger squirrel closer to the size of our grey squirrel. This is the one I would go after if they are plentiful and legal to hunt. If these are anything like our greys they should be a challenge. Good luck and post some pics of your hunt.
in reply to: Backpack Seat #14479I made a Torges seat and I like it. I was just looking at it last night and thinking gee how could I attach a bag to this and then I see the post on the Dr. Nordberg pack seat. Now I have to make one of those.
in reply to: A wife's perspective #14346That was too funny but kudos to your wife for actually going with you and trying it out. Mine never would do that. Fishing yes. Hunting of any kind. No.
I have used yoga to stretch and to strengthen but I don’t go to any classes. Guidance from an expert is recommended I hear so you don’t do poses out of sequence and hurt yourself. I use a set of cards and go easy. Maybe I’ll try some of the videos. Hippy Zenny sounding people don’t bother me. Heck I can learn something from almost anybody.
in reply to: cold weather shooting gloves #9229During early fall I use the half finger rag wool gloves with my dura glove and if I need a little more protection the wool glove liners from the Surplus store are available in half finger and full finger. I get a pair of each in OD green then use a half finger on my shooting hand and full finger on my bow hand. Then when it gets too cold for that I have wool mittens with the split palm. Just keep the dura glove inside until time to shoot.
in reply to: Best wishes for the TBM family #9202OK I missed where/how to get the Crush the Bastard bracelet. I’d like to do whatever I can to support Larry.
