in reply to: New bow to show off! #17436
Beautiful bow. I love to see Troy’s work. Cool name too!
in reply to: Limb tip protector #46150My favorite limb tip protector? I just pick a nice leaf to rest my limb tip on while laying in wait for some hapless critter to come along. If I lose it? Its OK the trees will make more. 😀
in reply to: P&Y changes mind #44642I think there is more to this than P&Y or the average hunter making a decision to use or endorse the use of a technical device. I’m not a member or an endorser of gadgetry such as the lighted nock. It is my opinion that the concession to use these nocks in the taking of a record animal will give the archer no advantage over one that doesn’t. It will encourage hunters to hunt later which is questionable in my opinion.
But why the clamor for decades over records? Years ago the hunter or fisherman just got his name or picture in the paper for a notable catch and that was it. Now if you kill or catch the next record, the worlds next number one, you will be inundated with offers from the companies that sold you your equipment as well as every media outlet to invite you to come and go on tour. You will be like an instant celebrity in the hunting or fishing world. The bottom line is not lighted nocks or other gadgets. The bottom line is money and the industry is generating enormous amounts of it for some people.
Corporations will lobby wherever necessary to protect profits and growth and P&Y mentioned as a benchmark is not off limits to this lobby. I think many here are probably right that the lighted nock is a gateway device and others will follow. Sadly I have no solution to offer, only my own convictions. If I seem apathetic I’m sorry but I just see this as a fight I can’t win by my choices alone. It has to be won by consumers as I see it, as that is the playing field that has been set for us. Public opinion rules.
paleoman wrote: Anyone ever use one of these “traditional” little campers? They are basically a “hard tent” as I heard them described somewhere. A heck of a lot easier than an old 16′ I used to tow around on the gas bill I’m sure. I still like a tent but it is a PITA to get stuff together vs having it ready to go in a little unit like that maybe?
Paleo,
The tear drop trailer is exactly what you said. Like a tent with out having to deal with a tent. I store most of our things inside the trailer while transporting with things like carpet, chairs, the grill or extra cooler goes in the truck bed. But you could simplify and reduce what you carry to just what will fit in the trailer. I wish I had it 20 years ago when I was tent camping or sleeping in the back of the truck on hunting trips.

Just saw this and yes I did build a classic teardrop camper.
Here is a pic from “Dew Drop-N” 2014 at Jordan Lake.
It was an adventure as no one builds these in my area so I had to rely on what I could find online. There are some very good resources and there a number of things I would do differently on the next one. I would be glad to share information if you want to PM me.

I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss. I’ve been off site for awhile and just saw this. May you find peace and comfort in this difficult time. Wish I could be there to offer whatever comfort I could.

in reply to: Blood Moon #30126I woke up at 3:45 am when it was supposed to be visible here but it was raining so no show. No worries though I always wake up around that time. It’s an old guy thing. 😀
in reply to: Caroline & David Petersen #27662My thoughts and prayers are with you Dave and Caroline, hope that all goes well.
in reply to: Left Wing or Right Wing Helical? #17011Agree that you should match the wing type with the bevel of your single bevel broad head for what ever head you choose but there is also a school of thought that Right hand shooters would benefit from shooting left wing and left hand shooters would benefit from shooting right wing. Honestly, I’m a lefty and I have always gotten better performance from right wing fletch vs left wing fletch. I’ve shot both and there was a time that you could get the left wing much cheaper than the right wing so $$ played into my choice but these days I stick with right wing.
in reply to: 'Nother Thunderchild #16995Thanks Tailfeather. You are lucky to be close to a Trad shop like that. I’m about 30 minutes from Eagles Flight but have not been by there. Guess I need get by there and check them out. You’ve been making some nice selfbows and it makes me want to get back to making shavings again. I have a few staves in the shed and I should get busy on one now that the weather is getting nice out.
in reply to: 'Nother Thunderchild #15834Smithhammer,
It came set up except for the rest material which I added. I have not messed with the nocking point or the brace height but my standard 45-50 spine cedars fly nearly perfect in it. It is slightly heavier poundage than my Super Shrew but as usual my first few groups are good but then I start getting a little shakey and then they are all over the place. But to answer your question I think it shoots very well, points well, love the very solid grip, and it has a slight thump at the release yet is very quiet. The thump might change with a heavier arrow.

in reply to: 'Nother Thunderchild #14697Had a little time this afternoon to try out the new Thunderchild on a couple of stumps. Punky stumps around here are real trophies!
This one was just right
My photography is not that great on the close shots so I had to show what I got
String silencers are a very nice touch
Antler tip overlays
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #11294I got one of my draw knives from an antique store. A very hard steel that will only sharpen using stones. No file will touch it but the stones will make it shaving sharp.
in reply to: Nice turkey hunting find #11257Very nice! I’ve not seen one with that shape. So, Simmons didn’t invent the Tree Shark concept!!! 😀
in reply to: Turkey fever #10250As tough as they are to bag with a scattergun my hats off to those that can take one with a bow and no blind. I’ve never used a blind on them but would not rule it out if I had a good setup for it. Mind you that even with the gun they were all in close but that might be near impossible with a bow. I have had some nice ones walk by me during deer season and I have come to the conclusion that you need a scenario like that where they are 15-20 yards out in the woods where you could draw when they walk behind a tree trunk, releasing as they reappear. But hey, good luck!
