in reply to: Bow building question. #44218
I totally agree David. These will be my first attempts and I have plenty of wood set aside so I plan on doing ALOT of experimenting! I just never really knew what the need for the belly glass was before. Thanks to Steve, I do now. Seems like a design without any glass at all will be more my flavor.
She punished us this year, Eids. Payback for the absolutely beautiful trip we had last year! Such is the way of Mother Nature, always keeps it even. Weather was rough and the bugs were the worst I’ve seen in 20 plus years of canoe country. Even so, there’s nowhere else I’d rather have been! Planning a bear hunt up there next fall. Been a while since I did one. No place more magical to chase Bruins!
I recently discovered the works of author Sigurd F. Olson. I found 3 of his books so far in thrift stores and flea markets here in Wisconsin and in Minnesota. The 3 I have are, “The Singing Wilderness”, “Runes of the North” and “Reflections of the North Country”. While not Trad Archery books, they are incredible reads with ‘Leopold-Like’ teachings on conservation. Being an Upper-Midwesterner and a frequent traveler of the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota, I’m quite embarrassed that I did not know of him earlier in life. Fantastic reads! I Read “Runes” while on vacation this year on Saganaga Lake in the BWCAW. For those with ties or interest in the Upper Great Lakes region, I highly recommend!
in reply to: Deer Farming #43066I know I’m throwing gas on a bon-fire here but on a related topic I caught a clip of an “outdoor” show the other day. the segment I saw almost made me sick to my stomach. they were pushing a new product that in essence is a lightweight and portable electric fence system for food plots. Now I don’t want to start a rukus here about food plots. if you use them, fine. if you don’t fine. I won’t even disclose my personal feelings about them here. What really stung me was how these people were using this fencing system to train the whitetails using their plots. What’s next? Cattle runs funneling deer past their stands??? If you are using artificially introduced foods and barriers to regulate the movements of the animals to and from those foods, are they considered a “wild animal” anymore? And when they shoot a “book” sized animal that they basically “engineered”, does that animal truly deserve a place of recognition? I can’t keep up with all this anymore!?!?
in reply to: The "Form" Thread #43056God I wish I was smart enough to get a video on here! I would LOVE to have you guys critique my form!
in reply to: I got this old BOW #43055Ya, wow! Sorry about that Ferdinand! I read that WAAAAY wrong! My bust:oops:
in reply to: Bow building question. #42442That’s a great point Steve, thanks! I was considering the glass backing more as a protective layer for the veneer more than anything else. I think I will make a few attempts without glass altogether and see how things develope before I try adding to the equation. Maybe less is more? And honestly, I’ll make as many as it takes to make one good one. I don’t expect success on the first few tries. Thanks again!
in reply to: Tis the season #4196941 days! 41 days! 41 days! 41 days!
in reply to: Texas game report, circa 1845 #41964Gotta agree with ya there Col! And the greatest thing about my bow over a gun is, when I miss… I can go pick up my bullet!
in reply to: I got this old BOW #41939Nothing wrong with shooting old bows as long as they are still in good condition as far as I can tell? I’m opening this season with a ’66 Kodiak. Bear Archery does recommend not leaving a traditional bow strung for long periods of time. Remind your compound buddy that there is no wood in his bow.
Paleo, I too suffered from a terribly aggressive sweet tooth and with my job keeping me out on the road, I found eating healthy a tremendous challenge. A couple things that have worked well for me are… One, make a list of healthy snacks and keep to that list religiously for about 3 weeks. This will give your brain sufficient time to retrain it’s cravings. Second, eat smaller meals 5 times a day versus 3. This will keep the hunger pangs at bay which usually triggered eating binges for me. This also accelerates your metabolism which will aid in burning fat stores.
in reply to: Old Bear Kodiak Magnum Setup #33758Such a beauty! I’m a Bear bow junkie, they’re all I own. Open the season this year with a ’66 Kodiak. Can’t wait! Your father is a lucky guy to have a setup like that, nicely done!
in reply to: Bright Fletching/Wraps and Hunting #33712They always see me WAAAAAY before they see my arrows!
in reply to: Longbow vs. Recurve techniques. #33065Welcome Tim! Enjoy the ride! I’m still quite new to shooting traditional myself and as Mike stated, Mr. Asbell is the proven authority on instruction. I primarily shoot longbow but recently a friend gave me a ’66 Bear Kodiak for helping him move. I have decided to make that my sentimental opening day bow. I don’t know how to describe the difference in shooting styles but it is there. I can’t shoot the recurve and then just pick up the longbow and be right on. I have to take some time to “retrain” my form to the longbow and vice-versa. It can be done, it just seems to take some time. Hope that helps? Dave.
