in reply to: Signs of Spring #13252
Well I left home a couple weeks ago for work and it was still in the single digits here. Got home last night and it’s in the 40’s and 50’s!!! Lots of snow gone already and the edges of the lakes are just starting to show signs of loosening up! Now all I can think of is actually having a chance of enjoying a traditional Sring turkey hunt! I drew a late week in May this year and the way things are going we may actually have a little green intead of white! Time to go do a little scouting and find some birds!!!!:D
in reply to: mushrooms and elk..i think.. #11123I was talking to a guy here once who guides for bear and he said here in Wisconsin there is a type of mushroom that grows in the fall and on years where they are plentiful, the bears will flat out disappear of his baits until the shrooms go bad or they exhaust all they can find. I didn’t get the type of mushroom it was cuz at the time, I really wasn’t that interested. I’ll do some digging and see what I can come up with.
Scott,
Living here in Northern Wisconsin, I’ve had numerous encounters with wolves while out in the woods. My better half saw her first this year as one trotted past her this fall at about 25 yards. And she was hunting on the ground. I’ve never had an encounter where I felt threatened or in danger. As others have stated, they’ve always turned tail and run once they’ve identified me. Now, one thing I will point out is that I have never had a chance encounter where a pack has found my kill before me so if a situation like that was to present itself, be ready for anything. I have had that problem with bears before and they can be quite reluctant to forfeit a free found meal!
in reply to: Happy Birthday, Mr. Bear #60451We are all very fortunate that we had people such as Mr. Bear that came along and had such passion that nothing could stop them from their goals. They blazed the trail for all of us to follow. Thank you Fred and Happy Birthday!
in reply to: The Intricate Process Of Making Arrows From Bamboo #55576Every time I see one of these types of videos with Asian craftsmen, I am simply amazed at the skill and dedication they preserve in their arts! It is inspiring to watch them work. The thing I admire the most about them is how their processes and traditions replace the need for fast results and simpler methods. If it ain’t broke, they don’t fix it! TRULY TRADITIONAL!
in reply to: Finicky tuners? #55556That’s a great point SH, and if I may piggyback it a bit. I’ve noticed that when I’m shooting my longbows, I cant them more aggressively than my recurves which improves arrows flight out of them.
in reply to: Free Class on Land Ethics #44032I learned quite a bit too, Steve. It was an interesting experience and I found it very beneficial to see opinions from so many different walks of life. I do wish the course could have run a bit longer. I’m sure there is so much more to learn and to hear from people who have studied Leopold extensively and have interacted with him directly was very cool!
A good experience overall, I’m glad I did it.
in reply to: Asbell Anorak #40876Great review SH! I have 3 garments from the Asbells now, my favorite is still my hooded vest. I’m thinking of getting a poncho this year for an additional layer for wearing before and after sun-ups to help curb the chills and to use as a seat cushion when I’m sitting on stumps and deadfalls. I just carry a wool blanket now. Anybody have one of their ponchos?
in reply to: Micarta risers? #40862Anybody else getting a weeee bit uncomfortable!?!?
in reply to: Cabin Fever Stuff #40860Good stuff Paleo! Had a frustrating day of work today and your words made me think of this past season and days better spent. Instant relief! THANKS!!!
in reply to: Yana Robertson – Hunting Vid #40856I thought this was a well thought out presentation. I nice change of pace that shows that a harvest does not need to be the focal point of video to show how much there is to truly appreciate out there!
in reply to: Nesting Dutches – Backcountry College #37825Another great addition to the collection Clay. I am curious about the aluminum ovens. I’ve only ever used iron ovens and I’m guessing you have as well. Do you notice any kind of difference in taste using the aluminum ovens?
Hey Wose,
Welcome to the fold. I came to trad archery after years of shooting wheelie bows. Finally it felt like the technology had killed the outdoorsman. Traditional archery rekindled the fire to be a better and more conscientious sportsman. When I found these guys, they were and have been an endless source of fuel for the flames. Genuine and great people all, and there’s always room for one more! Enjoy the journey… Forget the destination!
in reply to: The latest abomination! #29786Looks like the old Darton “Stinger” has made a comeback. Well with the current gadget and gizmo addiction of the masses of so called sportsman, I’m sure this “thing” will be out there helping less than average outdoorsmen prove to all their buddies that they’re the best hunter in the woods! My goodness! Just because it shoots an arrow doesn’t mean it’s a bow!!!
