in reply to: How do you keep warm? #17022
Similar to wahoo, I move quite a bit in the late season. Since I do all my hunting on the ground now, I’ll typically only sit for the first couple hours of the day and the last couple hours. Because of this, I layer up quite lite. A thin, moisture wicking set of long johns, long sleeve turtleneck, vest and my snow camo parka which is just a cover up. My wool bibs complete the deal. For extra warmth or emergencies, I carry a wool army blanket cut to work like a poncho in my pack. I got more hats than the average female has shoes so that’s never the same!?!?
in reply to: Untamed – Online now #22274Truly impressive Clay! What a wonderful piece of work. It’s easy to see your heart in this work and I will share this with all that I can in the hope that it will be the catalyst that opens their eyes so they too may see what passion and respect for Wild Places and Wild Things means, and that we should never forget that we are ultimately responsible for its prosperity!
My hat is off to you Clay. VERY WELL DONE!
I use my binoculars religously. Woods around here are tight and it’s difficult to “peel” the layers with the naked eye. Helps me to slow down as well. Wouldn’t go without ’em!
in reply to: What do you do when you hit a bulls eye? #55395I look for the branch I MUST HAVE hit!
in reply to: Hammock Seat Hedonism, Episode 1 #55392Get a good nights sleep before you use it. If you don’t, you’ll get a good DAYS sleep in it!!!
in reply to: But Whose Counting? #55390Got about 48 days to go here in Wisconsin! Buck only for me again this year but that’s no matter, one deer would be quite enuf if the gods of the woods see it fit for me to be sucessful this year. If not, that’s just fine too! Trying a new area this year and noticed a few yellow leaves starting to pop into the sea of green already. Rasberries and blueberries are ripe and the hazelnuts are getting close. Can’t wait for that first chilly morning of September!!!!
in reply to: Dean Torges has Cancer #55382I’ll be keeping Dean in my thoughts in prayers. Wishing him the best of luck in yet another fight against “The Bastard”!
in reply to: Another Case Study #55379Boy these kinda people make me sick to my stomach. Another blow the the reputation of fair chase sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere thanks to ego driven trophy mania! Ignorance is zero excuse IMO. Your smart enough to make the money to pay for trips like that, be smart enough to KNOW WHERE YOU ARE! And if your gonna go up against the King of the Beasts for whatever reason is acceptable for you, have the backbone to match wits with him instead of HOOKING A WORM ON UNDER A BOBBER!!! Disgusting in every sense!
in reply to: Untamed by Clay Hayes to be released Aug. 17 #33087Less than a month before most fall seasons hit!?!? What a way to get everybody revved up! Tell me you didn’t plan that???
in reply to: Sad News about Martin Archery #33083Prayers to all the families out there affected by this! Glad to hear nobody was hurt. I hope they can recover from this. Seems like the archery field just wouldn’t be the same without the Martin name in it!
in reply to: Greetings and Hello #30471Welcome Kris! Enjoy the new adventure!
in reply to: Killing the future of hunting. #30467Wow Clay! You could not have been more right with that one! The worst part is, this is actually having an affect on new hunters! There is a significant “Generational Skills Gap” that you can see in people you meet afield. Those of us who still try to hone our woodsmanship every chance we get and those who only challenge themselves by finding a gadget to get around every obstacle they meet! This phenomenon is dummying down the I.Q. of sportsmen. They no longer think for themselves. I was channel surfing in my hotel room last night and I couldn’t help but stop on the outhouse channel. Honestly, there was NOTHING else on. I only lasted for a few minutes before I had to turn it off, I was already angry! These two “Bow Pro’s” were checking their trail cams. Now here’s the ignorance of their “Scouting”… These two knuckleheads drove their pick up truck right up to their trail camera and as they were checking all the NIGHT TIME pics of the monster, whopper bucks, obviously eating something right in front of the camera, THEY WERE WHISPERING!!!!!
That was it for me! Time to check the home shopping network! The biggest fear I have when I see this type of mentality is, with the constantly growing dependence on super-technology to be sucessful in the field comes an ever growing separation FROM the field itself! Every gadget out there has it’s natural counterpart, I think a great challenge for young hunters would be to ask them what gadgets they believe are necessary to hunt with and then have them figure out what they would use if they didn’t have them? Nature is the greatest classroom ever conceived. It’s a shame thaat for now, the teachers don’t seem to be encouraging studying!
in reply to: Things That Might Bite #23270I’ve been stung by so many bees, hornets, yellow jackets, etc. in my life that I hardly pay attention to them even when I do rustle up a nest but HOLY COW Don, those honey bees stood the hair up on my neck! Scott, that’s a great call on the downed powerlines! I do alot of hunting cross country down line easements and it’s quite easy to forget the danger above! I concur with the ticks and Steve, glad to hear that all came out ok with the house! Years ago when I was a volunteer firefighter, we were called out after a storm to a structure fire caused exactly by that situation. The lightning hit a large White Pine, travelled down and grounded out on the gas line running past the tree. It blew a hole in the line and ignited it like a flame thrower, which may have been ok except it was throwing right at the side of the house! Just like you, we shut the gas off and things came under control rather quickly. Again, happy to hear you’re all safe! I guess the only thing I can think of is, don’t wander into a blackberry patch in the dark!?!?
in reply to: Grilling Game Meat #15197Lest we not forget, the first time we humans cooked wild game, it was over an open flame… Not a crock pot! LONG LIVE THE GRILL!!!
in reply to: Traveling Case #15194Thanks Steve. I currently have an assortment of wood seasoning and I’m slowly working on a bench to work on them. Not to totally sidetrack your thread here but, real quick… I’m trying to work with local wood for sentimental value so I’m using birch and maple. Not ideal, I know but it’s the best suited wood in my area. I’m thinking of kinda a flatbow design with rawhide backing. I was thinking glass as I asked about before but the more I thought about it and researched it, this seemed like the better option. Knowing you have a lot more expertise here, I’d welcome any input you be willing to offer?
Thanks!
Dave.
